Brad, as bad as those unis were, and the new O's will be, at least they don't approach the White Sox softball unis with the shorts and big, floppy collars. Those unis were a disgrace to the human race.:D:D -- Al

They were a hoot! I remember a shot of Luzinski in his. You could just hear the fire chief calling out, "Hit a home run, ya drink a beer. Oh, and the third inning? That's the beer inning."

On a tragic note, Seattle Marineres outfielder Greg Halman was killed today in Rotterdam, Netherland. His younger brother is a suspect. See the following story.

Red Sox interviewing Bobby Valentine for manager. Plus, MLB got a new collective bargaining agreement done. Maybe the NBA (No Basketball Association) should take a clue. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Yep, according to a team announcement, looks like Valentine is officially the man in Boston now.

Sorry guys, I was a little premature with this. It appears that the team is saying they are 'close to a deal', but no official announcement yet. My mistake.:redface2:

I believe he has been named manager. I'm sure it will be interesting as the rivalry will be ratched up even further (if that's possible) with him in charge. He's smarter than most managers out there and is not shy about letting you know it. In a contest between him and Girardi on brainpower, Joe would probably come out a distant second. He's confident to a tee and people love to hate him, which bothers him not at all.

Press conference on Thursday...........he is just what the doctor ordered for this team, that meltdown in September was on Francona, he let the tail wag the dog for too long, the players had better have their heads and rear ends wired together or else heads will roll..............

Being a die-hard Yankee and Oriole fan, I hate to see good fortune befall Boston, but here it is, in spade fulls. Valentine is one of the best and will get out of the Sox what Francona could not the last couple of seasons. The AL East will be the usual dogfight. -- Al

I see where MLB is poised to become the first US pro-sport to institute testing for HGH. There is a small flaw in the whole program, though. Evidently, the testing only covers spring training and the off-season, thus leaving the small problem of the WHOLE regular season and play-offs being uncovered by any testing regulations/requirements! Should be allright though, as I am sure no one will cheat.:rolleyes2::eek::D -- Al

Apparently the Marlins are making a legitimate offer/run to sign Pujols. Stay tuned. -- Al

Just checked the St. Louis team site, which says they have countered the Marlins offer. No concrete details, but looks like 10 years on both offers. Nobody else is really contending for Albert right now.

I read in the Chicago Trib today that the Cubs had or were going to make an offer to Pujols.

At the the Marlins are spending money they're going to be broke in two or three years. Let's notvforget this has always been a small market team and almost went out of business during the contraction phase.

Watching the Winter Meetings on the Baseball Network and it's beginning to seem as if Pujols is going to sign with the Marlins; Commissioner's Office has had meeting with Miami re the Pujols contract.

I think you are right, Brad. The Marlins have lost their perspective. I heard on ESPN that if Pujols signs with the Marlins that the total of the last three contracts the Marlins have handed out will total more than their entire team payrolls for the last 9 seasons, combined. Insanity. The Marlins don't have that kind of fan base/market. -- Al

Al,

Someone also mentioned to me that the new stadium, although super, will be a bit of a drive for those outside of Miami, compared to the old one. I wonder if the owner is just trying to make the franchise look attractive so he can sell and get out.

Brad

Mr. Ortiz signs a 1 year deal to stay with Boston. In the NL, JMO, but the NL East is going to be a fun division to follow. There are some excellent teams in place and developing. The Nationals and Marlins could be big players this season. -- Al

Hey, Mets Nation! Why was Jose Reyes allowed to get away? He just had the highest BA, OBP, and SLG stats of his career. Was it all money or do the Mets know something? -- Al

Is it me, or is there a major conflict of interest in MLB regarding that putz Bud Selig and the Mets' owners, the Wilpons? The Dodgers owner faces financial problems due to a divorce, Bud Selig steps in, forces him out, and used MLB money to permit the Dodgers to not only keep their best free agent player, but to add expensive free agents. The Wilpons are in what by all accounts is far worse financial straights due to their dealings with their good buddy Bernie Madoff, but, because they are good friends with Selig, they are being allowed to run their franchise into the ground, put a pathetically undermanned team on the field that will finish dead last in the NL East for the foreseeable future, and not forced to sell the franchise to someone who can afford to run the team properly.

Look, I'm a Yankee fan, so could care less about the Mets, but Selig, quite possibly the worst commissioner in the history of American Sports, responsible for the Steroids debacle and the cancellation of the World Series due to the strike in 1994, should be forced out and replaced by somebody with half a clue. A commissioner simply cannot be permitted to use his "best interest of baseball" powers to run one owner in financial straights out to preserve that franchise, but leave another owner in worse financial straights in control of his franchise, allowing it to become the bad joke of the league, because he's buddies with the second owner.

Generally, I agree with Louis. The Wilpons are terrible but the prior GM Omar Minaya didn't do a great job and they're bleeding money, even without the Madoff situation. They had a $70 million loss last year. You have to cut costs. That's what Alderson was brought in to do and rebuild the team.

If you look at the team, it wasn't working. Look at 07 and 08, they should have gotten into the playoffs but didn't. The team as composed wasn't a good team. What would bringing Reyes back do? Nothing. I'd rather get the draft choices. I don't think they had any intention of signing him.

Another thing, he pulled himself out of the last game last year so he could win the batting title. Would Derek Jeter do that? No, he was brought up properly by his parents. It's a matter of upbringing. I'm both pissed and glad he's gone. It's like the old Branch Rickey story, "we can finish last with you or without you." Adios, Jose, pedazo de mierda.

The Mets blow but I'm too old to change. It hurts too much to laugh but I'm too old to cry.

There, you get the years of Mets frustration out on the table. Except I forgot 1988 against La La Land and 2006 to the Cards. Another day, another story :mad:

Agree that Selig is bad. The Hot Stove MLB show is now reporting a rumor that the Marlins are out of the Pujols sweepstakes and that the Cards are in the drivers seat. Marlins now after Prince Fielder, according to reports. What's up with the NYY's? Been no buzz about them other than winning the right to negotiate with the Japanese shortstop, Nakajima. -- Al
