Time to put the 2012 season to bed and awaken interest in the Hot Stove League and the upcoming 2013 MLB season. How about thoughts on Josh Hamilton, the free-agent likely to command the most money. I know the rumors have the Orioles interested in him, but I don't think Angelos will come off the money neccesary to sign him. I hear Hamilton could be looking for a 7 year/$175 million contract with possible settlement at $25 million a year for 4-5 years. Lots of big money for a 32 year old. Is he worth it in today's market? Opinions? -- Al

Hi Al,

you know as good as I Hamilton will sign with Red Sox or Yanks:) and now that the Red Sox have cleared the books I'm sure they will be hot and heavy after another bunch of free agents, as far as the O's if they can find a strong middle bat, and hopefully thier young pitching staff can play better next year who knows?? aslo they must keep the happy bird instead of the generic one:)...Sammy

Sammy, I believe Hamilton will end up with a big market team but I don't know if it will be NY or Boston. They both have had some problems with their multi-year/trillion dollar signings. Don't know how Hamilton would do in the spotlight of NY, especially. Dodgers could jump in. The O's have the makings of a good staff but they need an anchor. O's should be just as good but I don't know how it will be possible to duplicate last seasons 1-run win record or their extra innings record. Roberts needs to get healthy, a big bat added (as you say), and an anchor for the starting staff and the O's will be there again. :smile2: -- Al

I would love to see Hamilton sign with the orioles just don't no if Pete will shell out that kind of coin as you mentioned, but I am really, really looking forward to next spring, I hope your right and they are just as good, which I believe they should be better with the talent in the farm club as well, and before you know it Christmas will come and go and into the new year, mmmm I can smell the freshly cut grass already:)...Sammy

The hot stove league should be pretty active soon, judging by the amount of players refusing their club's qualifying offers. Lots of free-agents on the market with Swisher, Hamilton, Ortiz, Upton, Bourn, LaRoche, and several others out there. Money, money, who's got the money? -- Al

Mets have parted ways with Jason Bay, he of the 165 avg and 8 Hrs. They will pay him everything he is owed but on a deferred basis so the don't take a big financial hit.

Al, Sammy, Brad, mates,
It is very rare for me to post on a US baseball thread but I think I would rather talk baseball at the moment that TS. A question gentlemen: There is rumour in the Land Downunder that an opening round of the baseball season, not sure on any teams, will be played in Sydney, Australia. Can any of you blokes confirm or deny this rumour.
As much as I do love cricket, I still watch US baseball replays on Saturday mornings on the TV.
Hope you can assist.
Cheers Howard

PS Chris, dude, Baseball is not a sheila's sport.^&grin^&grin Keep it silly.

Hi Howard, I haven't heard of any baseball being played in Sidney but I surely could be mistaken, if anyone will know it's our man Al he's the "Johhny on the spot" when it comes to anything to do with baseball, I'm sure he can find out, the last few years though the opening round of regular season ball has actually begun in Japan with 2 teams starting the season a couple days early, so who knows maybe Sydney will see some U.S.A. ball this Spring? by the way Howard what's a Sheila's sport anyway??...Sammy

Howard, I have not heard of or read anything about Major League Baseball being played in Australia. You might be thinking about the World Baseball Classic to be played in March, 2013, which involves international competition and to which Australia has an automatic invitation, but I cannot find anything about games for this being played in Australia. I will keep my ears open for any other info. -- Al

Sounds like the first blockbuster trade is in place with the Marlins stripping their team by sending Reyes, Buehrle, Johnson, Buck, and Bonifacio (and about 54 million in next years salaries) to the Blue Jays for Escobar, a couple of top prospects and some currently unnamed others. Marlins throwing in the towel and rebuilding, again. Be interesting to see if the trade goes through. -- Al

Selig is on the case. Trade under review. I don't know how the commish can cancel the deal as it appears to be pretty straightforward. Boy, the Miami owner sure put the screws to his fan base and the city, which got conned into paying for the new stadium. Loria seems to be an owner in the best tradition of Bob Short and Robert Irsay, ie., a jerkwad. -- Al

Now the Blue Jays get Melky Cabrera. They have turned themselves into instant contenders, if not the actual favorites. Toronto sure ain't letting the grass grow under their feet. -- Al

O's made a minor move by trading infielder Robert Andino to Seattle for outfielder Trayvon Robinson. This is an attempt by the O's to pick up a little more speed. I also see that the KC Royals have signed my man Jeremy Guthrie to a 3 year $25 million contract, based on what they saw him do for them in August and September. He had the 3rd lowest ERA amongst starters in the AL during those months. Godd for him. -- Al

Latest news is that the Rays have given Longoria a $100 million contract extension. Good to see some people don't have to worry about the economy.:rolleyes2: In the rumor category, George's favorite player, Nick Swisher, is talking with the Red Sox! Can the end of civilization be far behind?:wink2: -- Al

That's a deparature for the Rays as they play in a small market but perhaps felt they had to do so to maintain the team's competitiveness and fan base. The extension doesn't actually kick in until 2017 so it does allow the team to lock him up and potentially trade him, if necessary.

Swisher;no.

Hamilton; double no.

Napoli; no.

Just tank the season next year and load up on free agents with all the dough you're saving in 2014.

Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Roger Clemens are all eligible for the HoF ballot this year. Should be announced tomorrow. Any opinions as to whether any of them will make it first time? I tend to think NO WAY. But stranger things have happened and the public is a fickle customer. -- Al

Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza will also be on the ballot and they have a reasonable shot of getting in.

Agree. They were great ones. Schilling is also coming up but I don't know if his personal financial problems might play a part the first time around, plus his regular season stats are kind of borderline, although his post-season stats could influence. -- Al
