Baseball 2013 (2 Viewers)

I don't think there is any chance A-Rod will fall on his sword and retire. He is too close to a lot of milestones, stat wise. He is just 99 hits from the magic 3000; 50 rbi's from 2000; 53 Hr's from 700. He is going to see his career .300 average go under that mark if he keeps playing, based on recent performance. One more season like 2012 gets him all but the 700 Hr's, which at present production levels, could take through the 2015 season. Unless his hip is really bad, I think he stays for at least a couple more years. -- Al

The Nats just landed Dan Haren to their starting rotation, which sends them to spring training with a set rotation of Gonzalez, Strasburg, Zimmermann, Detwiler, and Haren. All winners in double figures. Haren will be a good innings eater that is capable of 12-16 wins and will be a great addition. Barring injury or regression on the part of anyone, the Nats starters are lined up to be just as good as last season. -- Al

Harem was rather inconsistent last year, with a rather high ERA, which is why he's no longer an Angel. Maybe the change of scenery will help.

Haren did have a down year but he has the potential to win and at a one year deal it is obvious that the Nats are 'auditioning' him, much as they 'auditioned' Edwin Jackson. If Haren doesn't do any better than Jackson then I have no doubt there will be another rotation opening in 2014. I still think the Nats should use John Lannan but he is not on Rizzo's favorites list. -- Al

The money gods have gone off the deep end again. The Dodgers are about to sign Zack Greinke to a 6-year, $147 million deal. This is a LOT of money for a pitcher that has a very average 12-11 record per full season pitching. He has never won more than 16 games, but at 28 years old he should be entering his best years. This contract is more than the Phillies just gave Cole Hamels ($144 million), who at the same age, has a 15-10 average record per full season pitching. I am guessing that 15 or 16 wins is the new 20. The Dodgers must think so, anyway.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Jon Heyman had reported that the Dodgers basically don't have a budget.

The Angels trade for Greinke was a waste. Nothing to show for it :(

Fear not, you still have Pujols under contract until he's 93, so you've got that going for you, which is nice........

Dodgers have also signed a left handred Korean pitcher, six years for $36 million.

The net result is that their payroll will exceed $225 million, a major league record.

Making the Yankees goal of a 189 million budget look downright fiscally responsible . . . :rolleyes2:

As of today, no news on either. I just hope the Yankees don't end up throwing a huge 7 year deal at Josh Hamilton. I hated it when they threw money at Giambi, I hated it when they got A-Rod; I hated it even more when they resigned A-Rod after he opted out of his contract, I didn't even like them signing Teixiera or CC to all those years. Throwing 7 years at Hamilton, with his documented off the field issues would be even more stupid.

Dave ,

This is the latest news !

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Dodgers have put Kevin Youkilis on the "backburner"
Luis Cruz currently projects to open the season as the Dodgers' third baseman, so we wouldn't rule it out, but it's more likely he ends up elsewhere. The Yankees appear to be the favorites at the moment and have reportedly offered him a one-year, $12 million deal. Cafardo hears that the Rangers could also be a possibility while the Indians reportedly haven't "closed the door" on Youkilis, even after signing Mark Reynolds. Hi Guys,

@ Louis I totally agree on the Arod issues, my thoughts on him are if we cant get rid of the contract we should just send him down to AAA and be done with it. He would likely get the message there and retire. I seriously doubt he will come back from the hip surgury 100% and is just going to continue to stink up the field during the post season. The others I am not so upset with since they seem to perform when needed. I suspose time will tell.

On Youkilis I can see where he would be helpful and for a 1 year deal we arent stuck with him if he isnt all that and a slice of bread! I certainly hope they get off the stick and resign Ichiro because we certainly could use a hitter who can do more than hit homeruns or strike out.

It's official. Greinke is signed for 6 years at $147 million. With all the NYY style spending that the Dodgers are doing, I'm guessing that ol' Donny Ballgame had better win it all this year or job security might become an issue.:wink2: -- Al

News report says the NYY and the Youk have come to terms and signed for 1 year. -- Al

Dave, I think you know that ain't happening, not with that guaranteed contract he has. Although the odds are against him being the player he was, if the Yankees want to have any shot of trading him, you better hope he becomes somewhat productive again.

Mr Louis
Arod din't opt out of his contract
Borras started that **** during the playoffs
Arod went to see Steinbrenner by himself
I'm a Yankee fan , not Arod fan but these
are the facts. Like Francessa says Arod takes
alot of pressure. Seems like everything is his fault

Don't know where you got that from but he did opt out. As Yogi would say "you can look it up."

Not only did A-Rod opt out of his contract, but there is a thread on this forum about it, with me stating (before Steinbrenner resigned him, you got that part right, Cashman wanted no part of him) how happy I was that he opted out, and that we could use the money to sign some quality pitching, and subsequently, how miserable I was they we resigned him. It would have been the Baseball or MLB Thread for 2008 or 2009. If you feel like searching "opted out" and "A-Rod" you will find it.

I can just see it now; Youk steps to the plate to take live BP with Chamberlain pitching and Joba drills him, Youk charges the mound and breaks the bat over his head.............

Youk is a Yank; what a laugh riot.

He's toast, but throw pinstripes on him and he'll hit .330 with 24 HR's and 110 RBI's.................
