Baseball 2013 (2 Viewers)

Can't see Schilling getting in. Lots of other interesting candidates although not HOF worthy: Kenny Lofton, Reggie Sanders, David Wells, Julio Franco and Sandy Alomar.

Jack Morris got 66% last year. He might get in or get close. Lee Smith and Jeff Bagwell had over 50% last year. They should get more.

Bonds, yes
Clemens, yes

The rest, forget it.
Going to be real interesting to see how much influence the 'roid scandels have on the voters. Bonds and Clemens are two of the best ever, yet they are also the primary suspects in the use of HGH and whatever. I wonder if the voters will send a message by denying 1st ballot entry for these and others like them. Maybe keep them twisting for a few years? Real interesting. -- Al

For personality alone, it will be a long time before those two get in, if ever.

And that's the problem with the HOF; it's got nothing to do with what you did on the field, it's all got to do with how nice you are to the reporters who end up voting on whether you get in or not, ie, a popularity contest.

Well, that's kind of like life. If you're nice to people you will usually go farther than if you don't. Bonds, more do than Roger, has just rubbed people the wrong way. Throw in the steroids and you make it easy for people not to vote for you.

It's more than just what a player did on the field. There are no threshold numbers that get a player in. 500 homers, 3,000 hits, or 300 wins is not a guarantee. Voting is based on not just performance but also on integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to the team and contribution to baseball in general.

The majority of sports reporters and beat writers can be annoying, same old tired questions over and over, some of them are beyond arrogant, they act like THEY are the story.

The writers in this town ripped, shredded, sliced and diced the 2012 Red Sox seven ways to Sunday, they went on and on and on and on and on about chicken and beer in the clubhouse, THEY were the ones rubbing people the wrong way; they get ahold of a story and just do not let go, no wonder why some guys do not want to play in cities like Boston.

Honestly who can blame them.

Playing in cities like NY, Philly and Boston is no picnic, regardless of sport.

Terry, Ty Cobb is considered one of the biggest a/o's of the game ever and I am sure there are a whole bunch more of " boy scouts / NOT " that are also in. Not sure if a fair number of HOF'ers were representative of the standards you offered..Michael

Nats just closed the deal to bring CF Denard Span over from Minnesota for a LHP prospect. That fills the CF gap that the Nats have wanted to close for a while now. Gives them Werth in LF, Span in center, and Harper in RF. Pretty good defensive line-up and decent hitters, as well. This also leaves the Nats with the flexibility to move Morse to 1B if Laroche doesn't resign, or to move Morse via trade if Laroche stays. -- Al

Some signings; Pettitte for $12 million and Mo for $10 million to the NYY's. Both for 1 year. Upton to the Braves for $75.25 million over 5 years. Oh yeah, the NYY's have lost their first string catcher, Russell Martin, to the Pirates. -- Al

Mets spend! Mets spend! Mets spend! The Mets wrapped up David Wright for eternity with an 8 year, $122 million contract. Now, on to Dickey. -- Al

Mets fans would have revolted had they not signed him. Can you imagine what would have happened had he become a Yankee. Mets are trying to see if they can trade Dickey. If not, they will try to resign him. They want to see if there's a market for him.

Yanks reportedly never made Martin an offer. I assume they think they can find a cheaper substitute. Hal wants to reign in the budget even though they just made a killing on selling a minority share in YES (their sports network) to Fox. The sports networks are huge money makers for them and the Mets (SNY is the Mets one).

Juicy rumor has the Nats and the Rays in discussions about a trade that would send James Shields to the Nats. This would be a great get for the Nats, depending on what they give up. Another 'ace' quality starting pitcher never hurt anyone.:wink2: -- Al

Arod apparently needs hip surgery and will be out until June. Guess he won't be traded anytime soon. This is a contract that just keeps getting worse and worse for the Yanks.

Dumbest deal the Yanks ever did. Arod was emotionally troubled in Seattle and has just got worse with age. Unlike most athletes he does not handle discomfort well and pain not at all. Maybe he will retire to avoid rehab.

Yankees Jacob Ruppert, umpire Hank O'Day (who umpired from 1888-1927 and worked in a record-tying 10 World Series) and 19th Century catcher Deacon White (who hit .312 from 1871-90, caught without the luxury of a glove or a mask, and was known for playing all nine positions) were elected to the Hall of Fame today by the Pre-Integration Committee (never heard of this committee before) and will be inducted in 2013.

Just read that the Rays signed Loney to play 1B, which is one of the positions the Nats could have helped them at. :( I wonder if this kills any trade for Shields. -- Al

I thought the best thing that happened to the Yanks since they got A-Rod was when he opted out of his original contract. At that time, I posted his opting out was great, and the Yankees could use the money on a top flight pitcher and a better than average third baseman. Instead, the Yankees resigned A-Rod to this 10 year abomination of a deal. They are basically going to be paying 25 million a year for a .260 hitter who can't catch up to a fastball and hits maybe 15-20 homers, and, with this hip problem, who probably can't be anything but a DH most of the time. I just hope they learn never to give 10 year contracts to any player over the age of 25 in future . . . :rolleyes2:
