Wow. Just saw this trade. Detroit clear winner on this one. Now, who gets Cano, and for how much?:rolleyes2: -- Al

Yankee talks with Cano are apparently at a stalemate. Cano's agents (Jay Z; don't get me started) are sticking with their original demands. Any team would be crazy to sign him at that kind of money and, notwithstanding his agents having dinner with the Mets last week, I doubt there is any interest other than the Yankees, at that price.

Some team would have to take complete leave of their senses to meet the Cano contract demands. He's a great player, but he is 31 years old and everyone has seen how these long term contract signings have worked out. $300 million for 10 years? Cano is dreaming and/or being deceived with bad advice. I can see him getting 5 or 6 years, maybe $125-$150 million (and even that is insane), but maybe that is the whole point. Maybe Cano is just playing the game by starting out with an impossible demand, so that merely insane demand looks like a bargain. -- Al

Al,

I'm not sure because they made these demands several weeks ago (before the season ended, I think) and they haven't budged. When no one signs him, they will find out.

Hi Guys,

I would be very doubtful that Cano will get more than half of what he is asking in terms of years and money. I seriously doubt the Yankees are going to bite especially with Steinbrenner wanting to get below the lux tax cap. Hope he gets realistic and starts to negotiate.

Dave

Dave,

About a month ago, Hal Steinbrenner was on WFAN with Mike Francesa and said that although they would like to stay below the luxury cap, it's not a hard and fast requirement and that if they needed to stay competitive they would go over it.

Brad

It does because if Rodriguez serves a suspension, they will have that money available. However, the arbitrator will not rule until December 31 and whatever happens the losing party is bound to take this to the Courts so unless MLB and Rodriguez work out a settlement, he won't be serving any suspension for a long time.

MLB has done what could be considered unthinkable: made Arod a sympathetic figure.

Hi Brad,

I am sure the Yankees will spend money if need be but a long term contract of 10 years isn't going to happen especially with the issues from old ARod. As for his issues with MLB I hate to say it but I think he has a point and Selig should have testified if he had they would not be heading to court because I see no way for the arbitrator to rule in Arods favor. Of course there is no way to know what was discussed in the hearings but there is little doubt that MLB and Selig will get their way and its off to court for all of them. Now in a court of law I am not sure how this would play out but to me there is no way that Selig isn't going to have to testify. As a lawyer maybe you can shead some light on the process because I have experienced it as a member of a Military Jury but not as a member of civilian jury so I am interested in your opinion. No matter what this will be very interesting to see played out in the courts.

Dave

The Yankees have signed McCann for 5/85, with a six year option at 16 million.

Excuse me while I ROTFLMFAO.

Great; so three years from now, they'll have three guys who can't play the field anymore rotating at DH whos combined salaries will be the national debt of Argentina.

So much for being fiscally responsible.

See what happens when the Red Sox win the WS; the Yankees panic.

I think it's actually a pretty good deal for them. Their catchers last year were terrible. McCann's game is suited for the short right field porch and the Yankees have a terrific catching prospect that should be ready in a couple of years.

I'm not sure how much Arod has much left and I think this may be Jeter's last year or next to last so you need someone to fill the void.

The Yankees have also indicated that not exceeding the salary cap is not set in stone. Considering that they remained in the race until the last 10 days with a lot of nothing, having McCann, a healthy Texeira and Jeter should make a big difference, if they can shore up their starting pitching problems.

It pays to cheat: Peralta signs a four year $52 million contract with the Cardinals.

Some trade action with my local teams as the Nats have traded for Doug Fister from Detroit. Nats sent utility man Lombardozzi and relief pitcher Krol to the Tigers and get Fister, (29 year-old starter, 14-9, 3.67 ERA) in exchange. Great deal for the Nats. An established vet to anchor the starting rotation. This leaves only the #5 starter open to be filled in spring training. Nats 4 starters, Zimmermann, Gonzalez, Strasburg, and now Fister, look as good as any in baseball. We'll see. I thought the same thing last year.:rolleyes2:
The Orioles, on the other hand, have traded their closer, Johnson (101 saves the last 2 seasons) to Oakland for an infielder I know nothing about, Jemile Weeks, and a player to be named. Billy Beane may have got the O's on this one. I can only assume that Weeks is being penciled in to play 2b, which leaves Brian Roberts in the wind. Again, we shall see, but I 'm not sure trading a proven closer without a good back-up is a good idea. -- Al

Johnson's stats looked to have worsened from 2012. For example, WHIP is up dramatically from 1.019 to 1.280. Moreover, he's had 50 saves seasons the last couple of years. On the surface that looks good but with that much work you have to be worried about his arm. As the old saw says, it's better to trade someone a year too early than a year too late.

True enough, Brad. My concern is the lack of a closer to take his place, but I guess that will have to be dealt with in spring training. Johnson was less effective in 2013 than 2012, as you point out, but Johnson could also fill in at long relief or starter, as he did prior to 2012. He was an experiment at closer that worked out for the O's. Just sorry to see him go. -- Al

According to ESPN, the Yankees chance of signing Cano are less than 50% and that the Mariners might be signing him, for eight years for $200 million.

If true, that would be a big blow for the Yankees but would free up a lot of money to spend elsewhere. Maybe the Yankees have finally wised up on huge contracts.

Brad:

Have you heard about any other teams showing an interest in Cano?

Yankees have signed Ellsbury.

Jason, hadn't heard anything else about Cano.
