And you just know that 2/3 of them are either in line at the concession stand or in the bathroom at any given time. I'll bet you hear more chatter in a graveyard. -- Al

It has got to be creepy playing in such an empty stadium.

Well, the Nats inability to field a baseball has cost them, again. They committed their 41st error today, in their 46th game, which led to them giving up their 29th unearned run of the year. And guess what, it cost them the game as they lost 2-1. Great job. -- Al

The whole AL East has turned around in the last 5-6 games, at least it has for the O's. Toronto is now in 1st place while the O's have slipped to 3rd. Also, the run differential has finally lined up with the team's standings. Toronto is the only team with a positive differential. Thing is, it could only take another 5-6 games to change 1st to 4th place again. Take your eyes off this division for a few days and it all changes. No one can get any momentum, although Toronto appears to be changing that at the moment. -- Al

Encarnacion is on tear for the Blue Jays. In his last 15 games he has 18 hits 11 of which are home runs. His slugging percentage in that span is .949.

Are you kidding me???????

Puig made a catch in Thursday's game that was one of the best catches you'll ever see. The Mets SS hit a ball into right center field that was going to be an easy double and out of nowhere comes Puig and fully stretched catches the ball. It was one of the best catches I've ever seen.

Brad,

Great description, I saw the play on ESPN's top 10 plays. It was spectacular.

Nats hit the 50 game mark today with a mediocre 25-25 record. They have been very inconsistent mainly because of hitting/scoring problems (fueled by numerous injuries to starters) and fielding, for which there is no excuse. The one thing that stands out for the Nats is this; score 4 or more runs and they are all but unbeatable. They are 21-1 when scoring 4 or more. Less than that and it is a disaster as they are 4-24 when scoring 3 or fewer. So the key is to get their line-up healthy and start scoring. The starting pitching has been a little disappointing but the lack of scoring and faulty fielding has been a main reason, but the bullpen has been VERY good. Of the 8 steady relief pitchers, 2 of them have ERAs under 1 and 2 have ERA's under 2 and their combined ERA is around 2.30. Don't know what the problem is with fielding. 44 errors in 50 games, along with 29 unearned runs, has literally cost them several games and 1st place. Still holding out hope that when the injuries heal and the offense gets straight, the wins will come. Just hope it isn't too much longer. Zimmerman and Harper are still weeks away from returning, I fear. Meanwhile, pitching and 4 runs per is going to have to carry them. The best thing, I guess, is that no one else in the NL East has grabbed the reins and run away with it. -- Al

At this point in the season my nominee for 'hard luck' pitcher goes to the Cubs Jeff Samardzija. He has started 10 games, has 8 Quality starts, an unreal ERA of 1.46, and his record is 0-4. That's right, 0-4. In his 10 starts the Cubs have scored a total of 20 runs (11 in 2 games, 9 in the other 8 games). The Cubs have been shut out 3 times, held to 1 run twice, and 2 runs twice. The Cubs are, in fact, only 1-9 in his 10 starts. Jeff should sue for non-support and/or demand a trade as settlement. Jeez. -- Al

The O's are playing some really good baseball right now. I guess the only problem is that the Blue Jays are playing out of their mind's right now.

You got that right. I only hope it is just a streak and not a jelling of a potentially fine club. If just one club in the AL East puts it all together, they will probably walk off with the division as everyone else continues to tread water. -- Al

Are you kidding me?? The Brewers blow a 5 run lead...leave the bases loaded in the 8th...sneak in a run to tie it in the 9th...and have to pinch hit the next day's starting pitcher (because the bench was empty)...yet Gallardo hits a double to beat the O's. What a bizarre year for the Crew - they just don't give up!

A bizarre game on many levels. The blown leads, by both teams, and a double (and it was crushed) by a PH pitcher? O's are gonna regret letting this one get away. -- Al

It's crazy the way the AL East is playing out this year; it's going the way I thought it would last year, Jays in first, Sox in or close to the cellar.

2013 really was a miracle (and I'll take it, that is for sure)................

Yup, I know the feeling. Last year the Giants were pretty bad. I complained to my buddy who reminded me that the Giants had won 2 of the previous 3 World Series'. I was quiet after that.

I am seriously wondering if this team will ever learn how to field a baseball. 3 more games, 2 more errors, 3 more unearned runs. Now at 53 games, 46 errors, and 32 unearned runs. This poor fielding has cost them 4 or 5 wins and made several others a lot harder than they needed to be. This sloppiness could really cost them a shot at the playoffs. As a team, the Nats are allowing 3.85 runs a game, with .6 of it as an unearned run, per game. That puts a lot of stress on the pitchers and the offense, literally forcing the offense to score a run more per game to overcome defensive liabilities. Little wonder the Nats are hovering at .500. -- Al

Al:

Great post and analysis. Fielding/errors have a huge impact on games. While not as glamorous as a home run, proper fielding is just as important.

Mets and Phillies are making sure the fans get their money's worth this weekend. They played two 14 inning games on Friday and Saturday and now they are in the 11th inning of the third one.

Keeping my eye on my man in KC, former O's pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. He's having a tough year, or more like a bad luck year. He won his first 2 starts of the season and hasn't won since, despite having 6 QS in his 12 starts. He is currently 2-5. He is pitching well but KC can't score. Over his last 4 starts, covering 28 innings, KC has scored 1 run while Guthrie has been in the game. That translates to an 0-3 record in those 4 starts as KC was shutout in 3 of them and the one game he didn't lose was the one KC scored it's 1 run, when Guthrie left tied 1-1 after 7 innings. Would still like to see him come back to B-more, where he belongs.:wink2: -- Al
