Doesnt every ML team deal with injuries? If one team does have more than its "fair share", Id chalk it up to poor physical training/preparation and poor conditioning. Frankly the "we'd be the cat's meow if it werent for injuries" just strikes me as plain old whining and excuse making. A MAJOR LEAGUE team is a large organization and if it cant manage its way thru INEVITABLE injuries (that every team faces) then frankly it is not a top quality organization and doesnt deserve to win. At the Major League level there is really no room for excuse making - a whole farm system is available with potential backup players and if they havent built a deep organization they havent done their job. PERIOD.
Yes, all teams deal with injuries. And you are right, if a team can't deal with injuries then they will not succeed. I was simply pointing out that Williams had done a good job dealing with those inevitable injuries and still is. That is why the Nats have hung around and are now currently in First Place. I know it's early, but First Place is a lot better than last place. ^&grin -- Al

Yea Al!!! quit whinning and making excuses!!!^&grin^&grin well there my good Rut, MY team has lost a All Star catcher (Wieters) for most of the year, as well as the Home Run leader for last year for about 2-3 weeks awhile back (C. Davis) an all Star 3RD baseball (Machado) who can't seem to hit much (except for other players) I believe is still trying to find his way back from last years injury, last I checked the Orioles farm clubs seemed to have run out of HR leaders, All Star players, ??? silly me?? I thought we had them stacked up in there like cord wood, if your that naive to think there are some injuries that certain teams just can't replace, good thing your a financial dude and not a big league manager, being that said my O's are somehow hanging around, imagine that...Sammy
Sorry, Sammy. I'll stop.:wink2: O's are in good position for all the problems they've had, not the least of which are the injuries and the power outage by Hardy. Hardy has me curious. From 2011 thru 2013, he averaged 26 Hr's and 75 RBI's and then, all of a sudden this year, nothing. He has 0 Hr's and only 15 RBI's. His average is fine but where has his power gone? Any thoughts? This fall off has not really been mentioned at all via the local sports talk shows or papers. -- Al

Isn't it unfortunate for "your" Orioles that no other MLB team will see its all star players suffer injuries this season? Gosh, what rotten luck for "your" team...

If the Orioles farm team is fresh out of good back ups, that is the fault of a poorly run farm system. No sympathy. Life presents challenges. Its the job of a professional organization, with immense resources, to have contingency plans. See the US military for example. Adapt. Overcome.

Well RUT, let's get on down to the nuts an bolts of our discussion shall we?? it is most certainly is "rotten luck" the O's have had so many quality players go down through out the first half of this season, but on the other hand we have had some solid players fill in as thier back ups, (5th best record in the AL, only 4 and a half out of first in the AL East lead, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....contingency plans? adapt?? ocercome???? ohh, oh, the O's have played the 5th toughest schedule in all of Major League compared with the opponents winning percentage, now me good mate, ya want to talk about adapting?? this team/management has written the book so far in 2014 on how to survive "rotten luck." you only post once in a blue moon on this thread so I take you don't know alot about baseball, and when you do it's usually because I called a team "My team" or some other none sense, so once you get some real facts together come on up and play with the big league boys, until then your still in the minors...Sammy

Anyway back to baseball, I really can't figure out the drop off on Hardy Al, ??? I know he started off banged up but seems injuries aren't a problem (Heaven forbid to say injury) I can't pick up on it? he's swinging good, playing good D, so just one of those HR slumps I guess, hopefully he comes round and bangs a few and gets his swing back, a solid player all around even with the shortage of dingers...Sammy

I was the captain of my college baseball team. But do I spend precious minutes of my life pouring over stats of people I don't know, organizations over which I have absolutely no control, and teams whether, win or lose, will have zero impact on my actual, real life? No. But I'm sure its perfectly fine for you.

Rut you through out the ball sort of speak, so I kindly replied with some not so hard to find facts (I am a big baseball fan more then some I know) that my good mate is not an apology for knowing facts and numbers, as if I'm going to bring something up in a discussion I would want to know what the hell I'm talking about which you have very little knowledge it seems to me, again if your gonna talk the talk know what to bring to the plate next time...Sammy

My apologies to the regular baseball brethern, I will return to better postings here...Sammy

Just need 3 outs Al, to cut the lead, I hope I didn't jinx it^&confuse...Sammy

Hardy is the heart of the defense and his play has been outstanding. I just don't see a reason for the offensive drop-off in terms of Hr's and RBI's. I am as perplexed by the lack of discussion on the subject as I am by the actual slump. Even so, Jones has been doing really well and Cruz has certainly made up for Hardy's drop-off and Davis not having hit his stride yet. All in all, especially with the recent uptick in the starting pitching, I'm more optimistic about the O's than I have been in a while. -- Al

A facts/numbers update since an hour ago, the O's now have the 4th best record in the AL and only 3 and a half out with a win over the Jays!!! just adapt baby!!!...Sammy

I think that the O's are young and still coming together as a team. As they gel they will be more competetive. In any event they are fun to watch and play solid baseball night in and night out. They are on the rise and in the mix in the AL East.

As long as they can get healthy^&grin...Sammy

Jason, your Giants got a good win today behind Hudson, who always seems to bring his A game against the Nats. Anyway, now we got to go to St. Loo. We still owe them for 2012.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Al:

Hudson has been the surprise of the season. I thought he would just eat up some innings and be a stop-gap measure. He has been so much more than that both on and off the field. I think he is one of the reasons why the Giants are running away from the rest of West.

Tough losses for both the O's and Nats tonight. O's got another great start from their starting pitcher but couldn't hit and lose 4-0. The Nats lost an even tougher game, 1-0, as Zimmermann allowed 3 hits and 1 run over 8 innings, (his 2nd complete game in a row), but the Nats could muster only 2 hits themselves. Oh well, timing is everything. -- Al

Lost weekend (again) for the Nats as we got swept by our nemesis, St. Loo. Can't seem to beat those guys. Only scored 3 runs in the 3 games and 2 of those were on bases loaded walks in today's loss. Bummer. The O's lost an opportunity by losing to Toronto and ending up with a split. A win today would have allowed the O's to gain 2 games on the Jays, but, alas, status quo. Bummer. Next! -- Al

Al:

Tough weekend for the Giants too after their rough go with the Nats earlier in the week. They had to come back down to earth but I had hoped it would not be so sudden.

Jason, the roller coaster ride we call baseball has me half nuts about now. Both the O's and the Nats are up and down more often than the NYSE. Thought the Nats had found the answer, they were in 1st place, building momentum, then they go and lose 4 in a row. Ah well, both of my teams are in the mix, both with mediocre 35-33 records, both in 2nd place, and both with a lot of baseball left. So I believe I will stay on the ride a while longer.:wink2:^&grin I think your Giants are still in pretty good shape and I am really impressed by the consistency they have showed, whether at home (8 games over .500) or on the road (8 games over .500). I am glad to see Michael Morse is doing well as he was a very popular player when here in DC. As usual, if the Nats can't take the NL, I'd love to see the Giants take it. -- Al
