Ok, this thread maybe a little pre-mature, but I had to comment on the O's declining the option on Nick Markakis. The option was for $17.5 million, which is a lot of money, but by declining the option, the O's have committed themselves to making the face of their franchise into a free-agent. I know the O's want him back but they are playing Russian-roulette by trying to get him on the cheap. If the O's miscalculate his market value, they will lose him. The O's are counting on Markakis' loyalty and personal ties to Baltimore to get him to sign for less money. There are going to be other teams that will covet the slick-fielding right-fielder so I expect there is going to be some angst on Nick's part about this process. For my part, if the O's blow this and Markakis signs elsewhere because the O's got cheap, I will never forgive the O's. I sure hope it doesn't come to that because I will find it hard to follow baseball without rooting for the O's.:mad: -- Al

Yanks need a right fielder and let Beltran be DH..I will send an email to Cash immediately and see what he thinks..Michael^&grin

Yanks need a lot more than that. How about 2B, SS and 3B for starters. Starters? Yeah, them too.

Wouldn't be the first time a critically important O went north (think Mike Mussina). I always rooted for Mussina after he went to NYY and I would do the same for Markakis. Anyway, the NYY's have always been a favorite of mine (after the O's, and now the Nats, too). -- Al

He should stay where he is plus I would worry that he would break down. Moreover, they have the Arod issue.

A rundown on free agents, http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/02/s...-on-eligible-free-agents.html?ref=sports&_r=0

If Sandoval wants to break the bank, let him go. Remember Mo Vaughn? Similar body type. Better to give up on a player a year too early than a year too late.

Brad:

Over the last few years the Giants have not been afraid to let players go. It seems to be working with the 3 Series wins.

Another big question locally is if they will keep Lincecum in the bullpen.

Jason,

I'm not completely up on Lincecum (although I know he's had major struggles) but does he want to stay in the pen. Maybe a change of scenery would do him good.

Some inside baseball sources said today that a possible 4 year deal is in the works for Markakis, no details or info followed the text but hoping positive news comes from this report, after Markakis time to get Cruz, Miller signed on...Sammy

Really hope this is true. May be that the refusing of the option was something of a necessity to clear the way for a multi-year deal at a lower monetary level and that the O's never intended to let Makakis go. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors? -- Al

Sandoval gets a 1 year offer at about $15mil from the Giants. Now it is time to see what the rest of MLB thinks of him as other offers are made.

That is just a qualifying offer, the same that every team makes to certain free agents, such as the Yankees made to their closer. If they don't make this offer they aren't eligible to receive a compensation pick if the player rejects the offer (likely) and becomes a free agent. If a player does accept the offer, however, he is in effect agreeing to a one-year, $15.3 million contract with his current team.

MLB has set the amount of qualifying offers this year at $15.3 million.

Jason, that is a good chunk of change. We will see how much he wants to remain a Giant with only the one year offer. I wonder if he will take less per year to get a longer contract elsewhere, or will he remain in SF, one year at a time? -- Al

As noted, those are qualifying offers only, which tend not to be accepted, and are only made by the team to preserve the rights to compensatory picks.

I've heard that the Red Sox are already looking at Sandoval. Say adios.

Brad:

I just heard that too, now it looks like the Yankees and Sox are going to be trying to outbid each other for him.

I don't think he will stay with the Giants.

Jason,

My feeling is that players should stay with their clubs. I know the money is enticing but somehow it seems that many players never have as much success once they leave. Moreover, the money is nice but when you're making that much money, isn't feeling comfortable in a place just as important. In addition, if he goes elsewhere, there will be a lot of pressure on him. Going to NY or Boston is a whole different level of scrutiny, not for the faint of heart.

Brad

The Yankees going after him makes zero sense; what happens to ARoid? DH maybe? Don't they already have 14 DH types on their roster, or maybe first base and then horseface is the DH.

Who knows with those crazy/one WS title in the last 14 years/Yankees.

He rejected the qualifying offer; sources claim the Sox are offering 5/100, or 20 million per year...............wow.

For a guy who's slugging percentage dropped from 552 to 415 over the past four years; not sure about that one, plus I'd look foolish wearing one of those Panda heads up on the green monster opening day.............:rolleyes2:

Just saw he rejected it. Sox offering 5/100 million. Good gawd. I guess the NYY will be in on this soon. NYY could always move A-roid back to SS.{eek3} -- Al
