Baseball 2015 (2 Viewers)

Jason,

My feeling is that players should stay with their clubs. I know the money is enticing but somehow it seems that many players never have as much success once they leave. Moreover, the money is nice but when you're making that much money, isn't feeling comfortable in a place just as important. In addition, if he goes elsewhere, there will be a lot of pressure on him. Going to NY or Boston is a whole different level of scrutiny, not for the faint of heart.

Brad

Brad:

Great point.

Although he is not the same type of player, Juan Uribe is a great example of that.

After winning the Series with the Giants in 2010 he left for big money with the Dodgers and went downhill for a few seasons. Meanwhile the Giants have won two more championships.

Easy for me to say, but if I am on a team with a great bunch of guys playing in front of awesome fans, I'd stay put.

The players will go across the street for an extra 5.00, today it's all about money.

I blame the agents who want every nickel to drive their commissions up, ****heads like Borass and other carpet baggers like him make me sick.

I still cuss Curt Flood every Opening Day. -- Al

If you want to cuss someone, cuss the owners. They basically kept the players in slave status until the Flood decision. This led to the pendulum completely swinging the other way.

Thank god for Curt Flood and Marvin Miller.

I was being a bit facetious but I will hardly be thanking Flood and Miller, either. I love baseball but the out-of-control salaries and profits, on all sides, long ago priced me out of attending games or really caring about the money worries of either the owners or players. I just try to enjoy the contest without thinking about how many millions of dollars a given batter makes per AB or how much the owners are making per ticket and everything that represents. -- Al

Sandoval is asking the Giants for a 6 year deal. It may very well be a negotiating ploy, but it is audacious nonetheless. I can't imagine any team giving him more than 4. My bet is the Giants would not offer more than 3.

The Mets Jacob deGrom was named Rookie of the Year today, joining Doc Gooden, Strawberry, Jon Matlack and Tom Seaver as winners in a Mets uniform.

Just last week, Juan Lagares received a Gold Glove for CF. With just two years in the majors, he's
already one of the best.

Mets also signed Michael Cuddyer to a two year deal today. Things are looking up.

Congrats to deGrom. That's pretty neat. My local teams picked up some awards with the Nats getting 2 Silver Slugger Awards (Desmond and Rendon) and the O's getting 3 Gold Gloves (Markakis, Jones, and Hardy). -- Al

I hope the Mets continue to improve. A strong NY team in the National League is good for baseball.

Couple more awards for the locals as Williams won Manager of the Year in the NL and Showalter won the Manager of the Year in the AL. Not bad. Now all we have to do is get to a WS.:wink2: -- Al

Here in the Bay Area there is a lot of uproar on local talk radio regarding this award. Many people feel Bochy should have won it. I strongly disagree with that and think that Matt Williams deserved it.

Jason, in all honesty, I think I might have given the award to Bochy. Williams had a club in place that was ready to win, while Bochy had a team that rode a roller-coaster to the title and the team benefitted greatly from Bochy's leadership and decisions. Williams did a good job, no doubt, but Johnson had basically the same team in 2012 when he won the NL East with it as, Williams did. -- Al

Sounds like the O's are making a real attempt Markakis this week, also heard they offered Cruz a 3 year deal but he wants minimum of 4-5 yr. deal, hoping somewhere they can reach a mutual agreement...Sammy

Al:

Great points, but the way Williams handled the injury plagued roster early in the season did it for me. A team can go into a tail spin that can’t be recovered from without the right guy at the helm who knows how to juggle the lineup.

I also feel like Williams has done a great job of shaping Harper and the other young players on the Nats.

(Full disclosure, as you know from my previous posts I am a huge Matt Williams fan, going back to his days as a Giant.)

No argument here. Williams did a fantastic job with a depleted lineup, keeping them close and in the race, until he got everyone back and then buried everyone else in the division. It is going to be fun watching the Nats in 2015, especially if they can keep the team basically the same. Williams will have a year under his belt and will know his pitchers a bit better. If the Nats can keep the staff together, I think they will get better than they were this year, barring injuries and whatever else the baseball Gods throw at them. Anyway, Wiiliams won the award and he deserved it. I'm just a little partial to the job Bochy did keeping the Giants in it when they hit that bad streak, as they could have thrown in the towel, and especially the job in the stretch and playoffs. Hard to argue with ultimate success. -- Al

Congratulations to Trout and Kershaw on their MVP awards. Trout probably should have had one earlier but better late than never. Unusual for a pitcher to win but Kershaw really was outstanding. -- Al

The Cardinals trade Shelby Miller to the Braves for Jason Heyward.

Wow.

As in Double WOW.

Good for the Cardinals, even with Heyward being a free agent after the 2016 season, they sold high on Miller, he of the two pitches.

Have to give the Cardinals credit, they never, as in ever, stand pat.

Only way to start this post is...OMG! The Marlins have lost their ever-loving minds. Stanton gets $325 million over 13 years! What in God's green acres are the Marlins thinking? That's more than the franchise is worth and about $324 million dollars more than their ticket sales will support. Insanity rules in Miami. -- Al

Well on the one hand, I'm happy to see a small market team keep their home grown talent (but is Miami really a small market is the question), but on the other hand, not sure how they are going to pay that salary.

I have a feeling that Stanton is going to find himself in a King and his Court sort of situation; a pitcher, a catcher, a first baseman, and Stanton covers the rest. :rolleyes2: -- Al
