Actually, declining attendance remains a problem. That is the reason for last season's splurge. However, injuries and lack of talent did nothing to fix the problem. Moreover, declining ratings on YES, their sports network, was also the reason for the splurge. Fox now owns a huge chunk of YES and they aren't happy with the declining ratings. There is a limit to how much they can spend, though.
In my view, their financial model is broken but they can't face the prospect of a few lean years like the Red Sox have. They also have not developed any players of note in the last few years. They are in a situation of their own making.
