Baseball 2015 (6 Viewers)

I wonder what Buck is thinking after watching his big bopper and his excellent lead-off hitter go bye-bye? I hope he isn't beginning to think maybe he might be better off somewhere else. Cruz and Markakis gone with Miller almost certain to be gone. The O's have more or less said they don't want Miller at the money he will command. All of a sudden, the O's got holes to fill and questions about the health of 2 other key players in Machado and Wieters. From solid team to questions all over the place practically overnight. What fun.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Welcome to the New York Yankees support group...:p Michael

That is what I was talking about after the Royals beat the Os, about taking advantage of your opportunities; you don't when the chance to go to the WS will present itself again. Still hard to believe that the two best teams in baseball got swept by the Royals.

Ain't that the truth. When you get there, it's all hands on deck, whatever it takes. You just never know if you can get back as so many things have to line up. -- Al

Unfortunately, that's 21st Century baseball. No team ever stays together long.

Al,
I think you (and Sammy) are over reacting to this; Markakis has not been the same player since Sherman Klump broke his wrist, he's 31 and has a neck issue.

The problem you and other fans have is you're upset over losing a guy who used to produce for you vs a guy who's on the wrong side of 30.

Your GM pulled a couple of players out of his you know what, rolled the dice and they paid off last year, specifically Cruz.

You can plug guys in and go forward................

George, I'm upset because I was hoping to see Markakis retire an Oriole, ala Ripken. Markakis is my favorite current O, not for what he does so much as what he represents as a solid team presence that is always there as compared with the seasonal players that pop in for a while and then are gone. A team identity thing, if you will. I have no doubt that the O's will replace him with a younger player that will probably be just as good. I understand the business end and the wrong side of 30 thing, but I don't have to like it and I enjoyed having a player I could root for as an everyday Joe Shmo who just did his job without glitter and drama. I am going to miss him. -- Al

I know how you feel Al; I stopped being a fan who rooted for the name on the back of the jersey and became a fan who rooted for the name on the front a long time ago.

Between the Patriots with Leon Gray, Drew Blesoe, Lawyer Milloy, Adam Vinatieri, Ty Law, Richard Seymour, the Red Sox with Ken Harrelson, George Scott, Fred Lynn, Carlton Fisk, Luis Tiant, Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, the Bruins with Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge, Bobby Orr, Tyler Seguin and the Celtics with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, many of my favorites have been shipped out of town.

It's the nature of sports...............

Well said Al, Markakis has been there for the bad and now the good as of late, and has always brought his hard hat/lunch pale to work day in and day out without any drama, I will certainly miss him, reminds me of an older Oriole from back in the late 70's early 80's named Gary Roenicke who was one of my favorite O's back then, not a lot of hoopla just a solid player who lined up where ever you needed him to play...Sammy

You could use Al's post for any player you liked. I was sorry to see players like Mookie Wilson, Doc and Darryl leave the Mets in the middle of their careers.

Roenicke was always a good, solid player. A couple of others like that who were favorites were Merv Rettenmund and John Lowenstein. Not spectacular players, but the kind of dependable players that any good team has and needs. -- Al

Sammy:

The first pack of baseball cards I ever remember opening had a Gary Roenicke card in it and it was my favorite. It was an action shot as opposed to the stagnant portrait types that were the norm back then.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Speaking of Orioles and baseball cards, do any of you remember the Billy Ripken card issued by Fleet in the late 80s that had the "f" word on the bat. For awhile, those cards were selling in the hundreds of dollars but then dropped pretty quickly in value. I used to collect cards and may still have that one somewhere.

Here's the infamous card. The words are on the knob of the bat.

ha!!!!!! I do remember that card, I never owned it as I was collecting Topps but saw it a few times, still pretty funny...Sammy

Yeah, it was pretty funny. I think I just read that it goes for about $4 to $5. I used to collect all the companies but it got pretty expensive to try to keep up.

Used to have it, as well. Went through that baseball card craze when my kids got interested. Collected all the major makers. Got out of it when the speculators ruined the hobby. -- Al

Not unexpectedly, the O's have now lost highly coveted LHP Andrew Miller to AL East rival, the NYY's. I expect that the O's are going to be a virtual hurricane of activity when the winter meetings get underway on Monday.:rolleyes2: -- Al

I had heard the Yankees were after him. Wasn't he a rent a player that the Os got from the BoSox.

Last night, for what it is worth, ESPN radio was reporting that the Yankees expect to be one of the most active teams at the winter meetings.
