Baseball 2015 (2 Viewers)

Injuries continue to plague the Nats. Both Span and Escobar left last night's game early because of physical issues. By the end of the game the Nats had only 3 of spring trainings projected position starters left on the field and it's been that way to one degree or another all season. The extent of the injury bug has been absurd. Of the 8 projected position starters, 4 of them (Rendon at 3b, Zimmerman at 1b, Span in Cf, and Werth in Lf) have missed large portions of the season. Rendon and Werth have each played less than 30 games while Span and Zim have played fewer than 60. Add to that the fact that the 5 man starting pitching rotation has also been battered by health problems, being intact for only a couple of complete rotations, and it says something about how well the replacements have played and about how well Williams has managed around all the injuries that the Nats have managed to take 1st place. All the injuries have caused the season to be a roller-coaster of good and bad streaks, with Williams keeping the good streaks on top at this point. I would love to see what this team could do if it can get everyone healthy and on the field at the same time. Good luck with that, as the saying goes. Thank the baseball gods for Harper, Espinosa, Scherzer, and Taylor. -- Al

Niese was on yesterday, giving up no runs against the Giants. He has pitched well lately but with the offensive "offense" has little to show for it. He is the pitcher most likely to be traded before the July 31 deadline. Anderson is a terrible GM but a very good trader.
Brad, to state the obvious, if this Met team could score, they would be a very good team as their starting pitching is among the best in baseball. What's the word on Wright and is Dillon Gee still in their plans? -- Al

Al, they're saying that Wright will be back in the second half. I will believe it when I see it. They can't give Gee away. They designated him for assignment and put him on waivers, which he cleared and he is now in Triple A. He didn't help his case; his last few starts were beyond awful and they couldn't keep Matz at Triple A any longer.

Yeah, I lost track of Gee so I guess the DFA explains that.:rolleyes2: Matz has looked good. Another good arm for your team, but does that mean a continued 6 man rotation or, as you suggested, the trade block for someone? Just my opinion, but maybe Colon should be the one to go. He's having a good year, he is a veteran anchor, but he's 42 and can't be in the future plans. How do you break up such a great rotation as Harvey, deGrom, Matz, Syndergaard, and Niese? You don't. Don't trade away the pitching, even if you need the hitting. I know Colon won't get much in return, and they could keep the 6 man rotation to keep inning totals down for Harvey, but tell your GM to keep his Super 5 starters at all costs. Find another way to get hitters. :wink2: -- Al

I was hoping that the Giants would be able to get back on track against the Mets but their bats have gone cold. They also seem to have gotten into a "just make the playoffs, the wildcard will do" attitude, which is fine unless you fall out of that picture too.

I see the All Star line ups are out; Gonzalez on the Dodgers, former Red Sox player, made it, as did Rizzo on the Cubs, the guy the Sox traded to LA to get Gonzalez.

Rizzo looks like he's going to be a stud, perennial all star; awesome, great trade there Theo, traded away a great prospect for a guy who wasn't built to play on the East Coast, he's a laid back doofus who wants to be in la la land.

Melancon on the Pirates made it as did Iglesias from the Tigers, two more prospects the Red Sox traded away and got **** for.

What a front office, bunch of morons...............

George:

As a fan I might be able to stomach those deals if the franchise was hurting for cash, but the Red Sox have plenty.

And I feel for you, it wasn't so long ago that the Giants laid waste to their farm system, it has just started to come back recently.

O's had a long, hard climb to reach 41-34 and 1st place. Since then they have gone 2-8 and are now 1 game over .500 at 43-42, back in 3rd place. or worse, depending on the later games outcomes. Up, down, up, down. Are we ever going to get some consistency? And the O's have to stop using Norris. He is proving a disaster wherever they pitch him. He is 2-7 in 11 starts and 0-2 in 2 relief jobs. Jeez. -- Al

Al:

The AL East is one crazy division. One of the commentators on MLB Network recently said that even the Red Sox still have a shot. They are only 5 games out.

It is compelling baseball and right after I check out the Giants latest standings/stats I always check out the AL East too.

So right. Here come the Sox. They are winning while the rest of the division founders. Looks to be an all or nothing race. Either win the division or go home as the WC teams likely will come from the Central and West. The East is going to be Last Man Standing.
The Giants slump has put them right in the middle of a muddled WC race. If they lose today (and they trail 4-0 in the 9th), they will be at .500, right in the mix. I hope they pull out of the spin soon. -- Al

I just do not understand why Bochy sat Posey in that game? The Giants are trying to pull out of a bad stretch and the only player who has actually hit during the slump was on the bench. They were facing DeGrom and hits were going to be at a premium so it really makes no sense.

Jason, I certainly didn't understand why Posey wasn't used as the pinch-hitter in the 9th with 2 on and 2 out. Why not use your Hr hitter where it counts? Odd move. -- Al

So Horseface, A-Roid, Sherman Klump and the rest of the MFY's come to town this weekend, this is the Red Sox season, if they take 2 out of 3 or sweep, they've got a shot, otherwise, forget it.

Have to love Horseface; 22 home runs and counting at the all star break when he looked done the past two seasons.

Come on; nothing to see here, right? What a joke, he even trots around the bases after he hits a home run like a thoroughbred, I would too if I had all the drugs in my system that he does.

What a farce.........................

Good move I thought ^&grin

Bochy is probably thinking towards the long haul, thinking he needed a complete day off. As things currently stand, it looks as if teams like the Giants and the Mets will need to think about winning the division as the Pirates and the Cubs seems to be going great guns on the wild card spots. Probably more doable for the Giants than the offensive Mets.

Watched deGrom throw another impressive game yesterday. I enjoy watching him pitch. How can the Mets continue to put together so many great arms? If the boys continue to develop as well as they are now, the Mets will have the best starting staff in baseball, bar none. The question will be whether the Mets management can leave them be or will they be tempted to trade some of their riches to fill other holes? Gotta like the Mets future in terms of pitching. These guys are all young (22 to 28) and will only get better. -- Al

Al/Brad:

The local Giants telecasters pointed out that the Mets have the best young arms in the game and they only stand to get better with experience. For example, DeGrom is a beast who can throw any number of pitches that can baffle a hitter. He has size, strength and the skill to use those attributes. They further pointed out that the Mets just need some hitting, something that is much easier to come by than good pitching.

Talking of Met's pitchers, I see that the rookie LHP Matz has been diagnosed with a partially torn lat muscle in his left side. He will be shut down for at least a few weeks, probably more. Bad break for the kid. -- Al

I continue to watch and be awed by the year that Zack Greinke is having. Won his 8th game of the season (against 2 losses) tonight with 8 shutout innings of 1 hit ball. He has now started 18 games this season and has allowed 19 earned runs, 5 of which occurred in his 1 non-quality start this season. He has allowed 0 runs over his last 5 starts, encompassing 35.2 innings, but only has 3 wins in that stretch. Bullpen collapses and lack of run support have cost him several wins and contributed to both losses. It's not too far fetched to say his record could be 15-1 or 16-1. He has allowed 5 runs in the 1 aforementioned game, and 3 runs on 2 occasions. He has 15 starts with 2 or fewer runs allowed. He is quietly having a spectacular year. -- Al

Even as a die-hard Giants fan I admire what he is doing.

What would a day be without another Mets injury?

Steven Matz has apparently injured his lat (no idea where that is although I know it's not his arm, that's all) and is out for three weeks.
