It must be the new math Michael because the Orioles are 5 back in the loss whereas the Jays are 3 back in the loss. Think the Jays' position is more enviable than the O's right now.

You make it seem like the Yankees are almost paupers. Two years ago they spent a lot of money and I believe got hit with a luxury tax. This year their payroll is one of the highest; the Dodgers may be higher, I'm not sure. Hal Steinbrenner, who runs the team, has gotten a little smart, unlike his father, and is trying to spend wisely and not trading away draft picks. Getting a Hamels or a Price would have done some severe damage to the farm system. Let's not forget that the great Yankee teams of the late 90s and early 2000s were built by Gene Michael when Steinbrenner was suspended. Had he not, players like Jeter, Posada and Rivera might have wound up playing go other teams. Do you not remember Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps?

After all these years of gutting it, they're trying to build it up. It just so happens they've gotten lucky this year as no one saw this run coming.

Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps; reminds me of one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes when Steinbrenner calls Frank Costanza to tell him George is missing and presumed dead, Frank chews out Steinbrenner for trading Buhner for Phelps "What were you thinking, Buhner has a rocket for an arm"................"My baseball people kept telling me Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps"......................Was watching the highlights from the loss yesterday on MLB network, they showed Gardner getting drilled off the neck, my girlfriend said "Wow, is he ok, his head looks swollen" and I said "He's fine; his head always looks that big"....................the bulbous one.................

All teams make bad trades -- Mets trade Ryan, Red Sox trade Bagwell, etc. -- but with George at the helm there seemed to be more of them. Who can forget the Doug Drabek for Rick Rhoden trade; only helped the Pirates become a power in the NL for a few years.

One of my favorite 'bad' trades worked well for the O's when Seattle traded Adam Jones and Chris Tillman (and 3 others) to the O's for LHP Erik Bedard. Jones and Tillman are integral parts of the O's (Jones one of the best OFers in the game) while Bedard was bitten by the injury bug in Seattle and never lived up to his potential before being traded and retiring. An all-time great trade for the O's. -- Al

So, Al, did you stay up to watch the game last night? I watched part of it. A plus was listening to Vince Scully. When it was 5-0, off goes the tube and back to my book.

What the heck has happened to Puig? He's hitting around .245 {eek3} I'm shocked. Figured this guy would be a great player. Doesn't look like it anymore.

The Giants have been sinking as of late, I am glad the Nats provided a little help by beating the dodgers last night.

Brad, I did stay up to watch the Nats and the O's (both on the left coast) and was happily rewarded, thank goodness. Rough road trip for the Nats, 3 in LA, 4 in SF, and then 3 at Colorado (who just blasted us in DC). We get Greinke, Kershaw, and Bumgarner. What a treat. It's a make or break trip, need to go at least 5-5. At least the 'good' Gonzalez showed up for the Nats last night. -- Al

Glad to help. Now we have to face Greinke and Kershaw. I apologize in advance.:wink2: -- Al

Yes, that is a rough trip but you got off on the right foot. If you hadn't watched, I would have begun to wonder about your fan commitment ^&grin At least Colorado is an hour earlier :wink2:

Something wrong with this stat: Toronto pitcher Drew Hutchinson won tonight to go 11-2 on the season. His ERA is 5.26, go figure. Run support might be a little bit important. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Angels are doing their best to throw it away. I don't see them as a serious team right now.

Well, off to bed. Greinke have held Nats in check but at around 110 pitches, the Nats will have better luck against the Dodger bullpen (6.6 ERA since the break).

Michael's throat must be getting tight: Yankees lost in 16, Jays won and the lead in the loss column is down to 2.

Nats continue to scuffle along, losing ground to the Mets and just plain playing without any fire or sense of urgency. One of these days they're going to wake up and find that the attitude of 'we'll get them next game' was the wrong path to follow. The Nats are a sorry 10-15 since the All-Star break and show no signs of pulling out of it. Somebody has to fire this team up.
The O's are also scuffling while Toronto is running down the NYY's. Win one, lose one, and so it goes. They just can't get any kind of momentum going. Toronto has won 12 of it's last 13 and just seems to be getting better. Kind of scary. I sure wish the O's had gone out and gotten an ace starter. -- Al

I just switched to fantasy football and will bet for my Jets in every game. Now that is real throat tightening.:(Michael

I don't really know what's going on with the Nats because, to be honest, I wasn't really paying that much attention until the Mets showed that maybe the could compete with them. I know that last night they were missing Harper; hard to make that up. Also the Ethier play did have an impact. I actually thought that was a bad decision by Ethier but one that he got away with. By all rights he should have been out. In addition, Robinson should have had the ball in RF; I'm sure Harper would have caught it.

They don't seem to be firing on all cylinders and I don't know how Williams manages the team but a couple of weeks ago Terry Collins told his team that if you hit, you stay in the lineup. If you don't, I'll get somebody else to do it. That seems to have made a difference as they now have more good players than positions and they're all fighting to stay in the lineup.

At any rate, it's not yet the middle of August so a lot of ball to play whether you're looking down or looking up.

If Toronto takes over the lead, it will be the first time since October 1993 that they have been in first place this late in a season. -- Al

O's just got no-hit by Iwakuma of Seattle, losing 3-0. Leaves them 1 game over .500 and, as of right now, 5 games back of the NYY's and 4.5 back of Toronto. Just can't get out of our own way. Still have 49 games to do something but I am becoming more pessimistic as each game passes as we just can't get any kind of win streak going. O's have had one 6 game winning streak and one 5 game winning streak and everything else seems to be a 1 or 2 game 'streak'. -- Al

Don't feel bad Al, the Red Sox just got swept by the MAAArlins.

No Stanton, yet they won both games, mainly because the Red Sox have a putrid, horrific, horrible, @#$%show of a bullpen.......................
