Baseball 2015 (1 Viewer)

Didn't realize, wasn't paying attention, but yesterday was the first time in MLB history that all 15 home teams won their games. Last time it happened was in 1914, but there were only 12 home teams then. -- Al

The Rockies' pitcher threw at Cespedes' head tonight and Cespedes deposited the next pitch in the stands. That's the way to show those idiots!

Put it in the books! Mets shut out Rockies for second night in a row, and 10 wins out of their last 12.

Tomorrow will be an early start. See youse guys in Queens :wink2:

Glad to help. Now we have to face Greinke and Kershaw. I apologize in advance.:wink2: -- Al
Jason, like I said, sorry we couldn't help. Greinke and Kershaw just shut us down. Zimmermann and Kershaw traded pitches, both throwing 2-hitters but Zimmermann walked one man, and baseball has a habit of punishing the free pass. The walk scored and that was that. Nats bullpen and defense turned a 1-0 deficit in the 8th inning into a 3-0 final. Our bullpen is really unable to get the job done, a real Achilles heel. I can't remember how many times the bullpen has turned a 1 or 2 run deficit into a rout but it has happened several times, just putting the games way out of reach. No scoring and bad relief pitching is a bad combo. -- Al

It's a power explosion today. Mets lead in the 8th 12-3. Lagares just hit a 3 Run HR.

If the Mets get any hotter they're going to go Super Nova. Someone throw water on them.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Al:

I am still in DC (heading back to California tomorrow) so I got the chance to see the game on TV.

It was a great duel between two of the game's best pitchers. Kershaw and Zimmermann both deserved to win. But you are right, the Nats' bullpen is troublesome at best. At this point you almost expect them to get shelled. Not a good sign.

To make matters worse the Giants lost. However, that was not the Nats fault. :smile2:

Jason,
Hope you enjoyed your visit to DC. We have had some uncommonly good weather for August in this area.
I have been cringing for quite a while now every time Williams has had to go to the bullpen. It's gotten to the point where nothing good seems to come from the bullpen and we would probably would be better off pushing the starters (sharp or not, tired or not) to the absolute max. Truth is even our starting pitching has been real hit or miss since the All-Star break with our best pitcher, Scherzer, being 1-1, and our #2, Zimmermann, being 0-3. Fister is so off his game that he lost his spot in the rotation to a rookie (Ross). Right now the Nats have a multitude of problems and they are going to take some fixing, but time is getting short. -- Al

The weather has been very nice, much better than when I am usually here. I was also able to hit most of my favorite DC restaurants with the added bonus (as mentioned) of seeing the Nats on TV quite a few nights. One thing I noticed in the sports bars was that many fans root for both the O's and the Nats. That was a welcome change for me because in the Bay Area you are either a Giants fan or an Athletics fan.

Overall, DC is great sports town with really knowledgeable fans.

Jason, DC still has many, many O's fans and fans of both teams, (like me), which is the offshoot of DC being without baseball for over 3 decades and Baltimore being the closest local team to follow. The TV market covers both teams, MASN carries all games for both teams on 2 different stations. I have 2 teams and 324 games to watch. A baseball hog heaven.^&grin Have a safe trip home. -- Al

Well, I'm here to own a comment I made and admit when I am wrong; I predicted the Blue Jays would overtake the MFY's this weekend in Toronto for first place in the AL East.

I was wrong, as in dead wrong with my prediction.

The Jays did it three days earlier than I thought they would.

This whole thing has a nice 1978 vibe to it, MFY's cruising along in first place, not a care in the world, offense was scoring a ton of runs, bullpen was lights out, they looked like shoe ins to win the AL East, then they imploded and the Jays caught fire.

Still plenty of time left, but at this point, it's not looking good for Aroid, Horseface, Dreamboat, Bulbous head, Sherman Klump and the corpse of Adrian Beltran at this point.........................

Al:

Thanks.

Some of the Oakland/San Francisco animosity comes from the fact that the franchises faced each other in the WS. I personally have nothing against the A's. As a matter of fact I admire the fact that field a competitive club on such a bargain basement budget.

One other thing I noticed in the sports bars in DC was that the players are escaping much of the blame for the teams' problems. Williams got most of the criticism for the Nats and Snyder got the criticism for the Redskins.

Always seems to be the top dogs that get blamed, and it's mostly deserved. Snyder is a disaster as an owner and has become nothing but a running joke in DC, which is too bad because he really loves the team. Williams has made mistakes and is taking heat for it but his players are also underperforming (except for an obvious few such as Harper and Scherzer) for whatever reason and Williams is taking the heat for that as well. The old saying: Easier to blame one than 24. :wink2: -- Al

A great game, wonderful weather day but, oh, that drive home: took like an hour to get over the George Washington Bridge. Simply awful. Some photos.

Thanks Jason. It's about a 75 minute ride theoretically from NJ to Queens but the bridge traffic is a killer. That's why I don't go to more games. Anyway, a great time. I was to an Angel game at Yankee Stadium earlier this year with my son but just not the same thing when it's not your team or home park.

I stayed up to watch some of the Giants game and it's easy to say that the Nats look lifeless because they're not driving in any runs but they look like a team that just needs that one big hit to get them going and right now they're not getting it. Hitting is contagious and if they can get that hit, they might get out of their doldrums. Of course, I don't mind ^&grin In addition, they have run into some good pitching lately and that will make any team look bad.

As an aside, I don't think Bob Carpenter, the Nats TV play by play man, is very good. F.P. Santangelo is not bad and makes some good points but they don't really talk to each other. The Mets' broadcasters always seem to have a conversation and Gary Cohen sort of directs the conversation with Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling. Gary is an excellent play by play man and Ron and Keith know the game and aren't afraid to criticize the team, which doesn't endear them to management but they are institutions; you can't mess with them.
