I remember the days when only four teams went to the playoffs and Atlanta was in the west. You could win 90+ games and not even make the playoffs. That was before ESPN came in and increased the incentive to play more games for the extra TV money. As if the 162 game season is not long enough. I'm not sure that is sustainable with the empty stadiums and awful TV ratings. Time Warner over payed for the Dodgers games and no one will pick them up. That has kept them off the air in LA for the past couple of seasons.

Yep; in 1978 when the Red Sox blew a 14 game lead to the MFY's, they finished with 98 wins.

And missed the playoffs.

Well in todays sports world, we have to reward mediocrity, so 16 NBA and NHL teams make the playoffs and they created two more divisions in each conference in football and then threw in wild card teams so that 6 teams in each conference make the playoffs.

Saw a story on HBO about kids today and how EVERYONE gets a trophy; they profiled a trophy company that was a mom and pop operation and now the son runs it, his warehouse looks like a Home Depot, he does an ungodly amount of revenue a year on trophies.

I'm in the wrong business...................

Tough loss for the Giants tonight in a series that will measure how playoff ready they are.

I really think this team can repeat, however in order to do so they are going to need to beat teams like the Cardinals.

I watched the game (Mets off); Posey almost pulled it off.

Love to listen to Jon Miller when he's on. Otherwise, ho hum broadcasting crew.

Don Zimmer was the manager..97 wins in 1977, 98 wins in 1978, and 91 wins in 1979 without a first place finish and the RS fans hated his guts..:redface2:Michael

Something wrong with this stat: Toronto pitcher Drew Hutchinson won tonight to go 11-2 on the season. His ERA is 5.26, go figure. Run support might be a little bit important. :rolleyes2: -- Al
I wonder what's up with this guy. Won again to go 12-2, with a very high 5.06 ERA and has now been sent down to AAA by Toronto. Supposedly to shorten the rotation for the playoff run. Probably come back up in September but how can a team send a 12-2 starter to the minors at this point in the year? I'm guessing lack of consistency as his stats aren't too awful, but he does have only 8 QS in 24 turns and that ERA is awful. -- Al

The O's just keep plugging away!! only 4 out of the East right now and a huge series starting tonight in Baltimore against Brads evil Mets who have owned the O's since 69!!!!! hoping some payback is the order of the day :)...Sammy

I'll settle for a split Sammy, just to get the road trip off to a good start, after that disaster this weekend. I know that the Os are flying high right now so it won't be an easy couple of games. Mets feast off of bottom feeders (as most good teams should) but struggle against good teams.

Sounds like the O's secret to success this year, beat the weaker teams but can't seem to pull off the big series against the top tier, should be a good series...Sammy

Davis got robbed again. He has lost something like 4 Hr's to outstanding OF plays this year. Hope the O's can do something with the Mets pitchers as deGrom and Syndergaard are 2 of the best in baseball. Will be a good mini-series. -- Al

Full scale criticism of the Nats has broken out in the Washington Post with 3 large articles this AM. Covers everything I have been screaming about. Also an interesting article on just how much of the offensive load Harper has been forced to carry and how well he has doe it, while emphasizing just how good he has been, using all those sabermetrics everyone loves. Nats have really gone into the toilet since July 5, going 12-23, with a 9 game swing in the standings. It seems to be a bit more than a typical slump.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Is it time to fire Williams? The season is still salvageable.

Plenty of speculation about that but the prevailing opinion seems to be that since Williams was hand-picked by Rizzo, and he was MoY last season, his job would seem to be safe and Rizzo has been 'hinting' that no change is in the wind (kiss of death?). Personally, I think it's sink or swim with Williams. Everything went mostly right last season, not so much this season. Williams is still learning, Rizzo likes him, and he is reportedly popular with the players (whether he has lost the clubhouse is another matter), so I think he stays (another kiss of death?).:wink2: -- Al

According to news reports, Mets have effectively cut Parnell, after his disastrous appearances against the Bucs. He was told he could be designated for assignment, sent to Triple A or put on the DL; he chose the DL. As he is a free agent after this year, that's the end of his Mets career. Adios.

It's like NY South in Baltimore tonight. Tons of blue and orange. Love it!^&cool

Same deal when the Yankees play there.

And the Red Sox.

And the Cardinals.

And the Tigers.

And the Pirates.

And the Dodgers.

And the..................well you get the idea.

GGGGGGOOOOOOOMMMMEEETTTSSSS! Michael

Well, it's never easy, is it. Whew. I fault that rocket scientist of a manager for not starting Familia in the 9th.

Hope they're no Rockies fans on here but their TV broadcasting team is terrible.
