Looks like DeGrom may be hurt. If so, join the line. That would just leave Syndergaard and Colon as your frontline starters. You can't win like that. They weren't probably going to win this year anyway.

None of the WC contenders are very good. The Giants are not that good, the Cards have been hit by the injury bug, same issue for the Mets, and the Pirates are struggling. No one is going to beat the Cubs anyway. It will be a shock if they don't make it to the WS.

SF is going to be 1/2 game behind the Dodgers after LA drops 2 today. They put that on the line in a huge 4 game series with the Cubs starting tomorrow. This as LA draws the Padres. :rolleyes2: SF needs to bring it because I don't think SD will be much help. I'll tune in Saturday for sure because of the pitching match-up, Mad Bum vs Jake. It should be a great game and a great series. -- Al

As expected, great duel between Bumgarner and Arrieta today. Both went 6 innings, giving up 2 earned runs each. The stat that stands out to me was that Bumgarner struck out 10 while walking none.

Most importantly the Giants got a much needed win against the best team in baseball.

I caught the last part of a scroll that stated Bums was 2nd only to Kershaw over the last several seasons in 10 strikeout games with 0 walks. Not too shabby.:wink2: -- Al

O's got their second straight good start and shut down NY again. Better yet, they gained a game on the Jays. Now only 2 games out of 1st place. -- Al

This O's team has more lives then a cat!!! great win, but even better news that Tillman is scheduled back next week!!! also O'Day possibly soon as well, just riding this roller coaster of a season I guess until the very end :)...Sammy

Rangers, although that one is a little harder to handicap. Personally, I'd like to see Cleveland win it. WCs will be Red Sox and Tigers.

Red Sox are now tied for first place with the Jays.

Unbelievable.

If they can straiten out the dumpster fire of a bullpen, they have a real good shot; they can rake with the best of them, have two very good top of the rotation pitchers and their #3 isn't bad.

At least this month will be entertaining.................

Best division in baseball, year after year. 2 games separating 3 teams with 27 left to play. Who could ask for more? And the WC race is even more jumbled with 8 teams within 5 games. I think we fans are in for some excitement.^&grin -- Al

Is it better or do we just have a lower level of talent -- read as mediocrity -- fighting for a small number of spots? I'd say the latter when it comes to the AL or NL WC. On the other hand, if you look at last year's NL WC, I'd say the former.

More competitive doesn't mean better.

The Giants are just about where I thought they would be after this weekend's series with the Cubs. 3 games out with 26 games left.

That was a tough loss, for sure, but they're generally in good position to be the first WC.

I would consider it a major accomplishment if the Mets were able to make it to the WC. DeGrom is going to miss a few starts and since we're in September that may mean he will miss the rest of the season. Zack Wheeler has been shut down so they will need to get by with a patchwork rotation. The schedule gets a little easier but they've had trouble with sub 500 teams this year. My hope would to get some of these rookie SPs some experience and get Conforto moving in the right direction.

Lugo looked good tonight.

He's done well so far; he had a high ERA at Las Vegas but that is a very friendly hitter park.

Thanks to TV scheduling -- grrr! --- the Mets probably didn't leave NY last night until 1am but they have a 1pm game today against the Reds. I can't imagine they got too much rest. I assume Colon, today's SP, went on ahead. At least Bruce is starting to heat up, finally.

Cards play Pirates, who have lost in a row. Let's hope the Bucs can turn it around.

OK, where has today's Ubaldo been all season? He threw a beauty today, beating the Rays 7-3. He threw the O's first complete game of the season and his first since 2011. Gave up 3 runs and 2 hits in the 1st inning and then zippo the rest of the way. Where might the O's be if this guy had thrown like this all season? -- Al

The Red Sox have laid back to back offensive eggs, losing to the last place A's 1-0 and the last place Padres 2-1.

When they hit, they don't pitch, when they pitch, they don't hit and when they do both, the bullpen implodes.

Brad is right; this is at best a mediocre team and yet they are one game out of first.

The AL is not very good this year, no dominant team.

If the Cubs don't win a WS this year, they never will.................................

I am right there with you George. Brad was right about the Giants being mediocre too. They have the worst record in baseball since the All-Star break, they have not won three games in a row since the All-Star break and they have four hits or fewer in five straight games for the first time since 1913.

Ouch.

The big issue about any AL Eastern division team that makes it to the WS is that the BJ's, O's, or RS do not have a first class starting staff to compete. Usually, pitching dominates most playoffs. Michael
