The big issue about any AL Eastern division team that makes it to the WS is that the BJ's, O's, or RS do not have a first class starting staff to compete. Usually, pitching dominates most playoffs. Michael

Porcello has been outstanding this year, he's mentioned in the Cy Young voting. Wright was having an excellent season until the moron we have as a manager used him as a pinch runner in a NL game and he hurt his shoulder diving back into the bag and hasn't been the same since.

Rodriquez hurt his knee in spring training and has been hot and cold, mostly cold, while Price, the 30 million dollar man, has been a disappointment, but has pitched well lately.

Pomeranz, a guy they got in a trade, was bad when he first got here but has gotten a lot better.

But as you said, overall the staff has not been good.................and don't me started on the bullpen.

I am right there with you George. Brad was right about the Giants being mediocre too. They have the worst record in baseball since the All-Star break, they have not won three games in a row since the All-Star break and they have four hits or fewer in five straight games for the first time since 1913.

Ouch.

I thought the Giants would rebound yesterday because, after all, the Cubs beat everybody. Right now, they're in danger of being overtaken by the Cards and the Mets unless they get it together.

Yesterday was a game the Mets probably had no business winning. They didn't get in to Cincinnati until late and Terry more or less conceded that it would be nice to win but not the end of the world if they didn't (as he rested most of his starters). Matt Reynolds, the starting SS, didn't arrive until 9am, because he grabbed the red eye from LV to Boston and then flew to Cincinnati. He had a HR and two other hits. As the Mets broadcasters said, "sleep is overrated."

The Mets won because their most consistent pitcher, Bartolo Colon, pitched a beauty o a game for 6 innings and the bullpen cleaned up, once again proving that pitching is the key factor in a team's success or failure. Colon is just unbelievable. He leads the Mets staff in wins, IP, and has an outstanding ERA of 3.22. All very impressive for a 43 year old. All he does is win 14 games or so every year and starts every 5th day 30 times a season. He is a crucial cog in the Mets staff. -- Al

He is a wonder. Where would the Mets be without him? He's clearly been their best pitcher the last three years despite the press the other four get; he's indicated he would like to come back for a fourth. He's the ultimate pro and very unflappable. The most emotion you'll see from him on the mound is when he flips the ball up in the air a couple of times. Yesterday, when the Reds had a runner on, he refused to give in to Votto whereas most pitchers probably would have thrown a fastball.

It's becoming more and more likely that deGrom and Matz won't be returning before the end of the month. Although the Mets may make the playoff -- they have a very soft schedule the rest of the way -- they won't get far without one of those two.

Something to ponder: The Texas Rangers have the 2nd most wins in MLB, 82, yet their pitching staff is ranked #20. with a 4.40 ERA. They are only +23 in run differential. How did they win 82 games? Could be 'the team o' destiny'. Or could be the pitching inadequacies will catch up to them in the playoffs. -- Al

Looks like the boys of Treefrog teams are doing pretty good at the moment, you got Brad's Mets holding a wildcard spot, Louis's Yanks only 3.5 out of a wildcard, Jason's Giants 1 out of a wildcard, George's Red Sox 1 game out of 1st, then Al's, Chris's, Geb's and myself O's team holding a wildcard but still in hopes of catching the Jay birds before it's all said and done, sorry if I missed anyone's team, just the fellows that participate the most in this thread off the top of my head...Sammy

It is going to be an interesting final few weeks of this season!

Sammy,

You nearly jinxed me! If Gardner doesn't make that snow cone catch against the wall to preserve a 7-6 lead with the bases loaded and two outs, the Yankees don't hold on for the win! Sometimes its better to be lucky than good!{sm4}

Yup, just like today Jones doesn't make a snowcone catch in center and the LET'S GO O'S!! lose to the Rays 7-6.

Sometimes it better to be good than lucky.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the earth the Giants are leading the Rockies 5-3. And stop the presses, they have nine hits!!!!

And so much for that.

The Giants lose 6-5. They did get 13 hits but that was no match for their use of 9 pitchers, 2 of which did not record a single out. Now I am relegated to scoreboard waiting to see what the Dodgers do.

It's been a good week for the Mets so far as they swept the Reds and are now just one game out of the first WC. Day off on Thursday.

I ain't saying nothing, but some pinstriped kids{eek3} are barreling down the highway and running right up your tailpipes. From Baltimore to Boston, speed traps have been set up. .........Metaphors are supposed to ward off jinxing...:confused:Michael

Objects are closer than they appear. Yanks only 2 GBs in the loss column.

The use of the number of pitchers is one of the issues. Unlike teams like the Cubs, Mets or Nats, they don't have an established 8th or 9th inning guy they can go to so they're left to mix and match.

Hard to believe after the early issues with the rotation and the recent issues with the bullpen, but the Red Sox are now in first place by one game over the Rays.

How long it will last is anyones guess as they have a huge 3 game series coming up in Toronto.

24 games to go, all with the MFY's, Rays, Jays and LET'S GO O'S!!!; what a dogfight this is going to be....................

Nats beat Atlanta in 11 innings last night, and used 10 pitchers doing it. The game had no pace, took forever, and had me tearing my hair out in frustration. MLB will end up limiting pitching changes because of crap like this. I begin to wonder about the wisdom of September call-ups. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Ron Darling mentioned the other night that baseball has four seasons: spring training, regular season baseball, September baseball and the playoffs.

Why is Matt Latos on the Nats? Has he done anything?

Brad, I'm not sure why Latos is with the Nats except that the Nats have been keeping an eye on his progress, I guess with the idea that he can spot start or pitch long relief. Latos has pitched in 2 games so far. He got smacked by the Mets the other night and got the win in last night's Atlanta game, but the Nats have so many starting pitcher prospects in line, I'm not sure Latos has any real future here. Essentially, the Nats will have 5 guys trying to fill out the #5 starter spot by next spring. I would guess that the Nats are just following the old truth that you can never have enough pitching. And now Strasburg is going to have an MRI on his elbow. He felt a twinge in it last night in his first start off the DL. Lots of people holding their breath in DC at the moment. -- Al
