Best British War film ? (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

Great idea… Here’s my top ten… in no particular order… They’re all great!

1. “THE DAMBUSTERS”
2. “DUNKIRK”
3. “YANGTSE INCIDNET” (The Story of HMS AMETHYST)
4. “IN WHICH WE SERVE”
5. “ICE COLD IN ALEX”
6. “THE HILL” (Sean Connery in an Army Glasshouse)
7. “BATTLE OF BRITAIN”
8. ZULU
9. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
10. “CHARGE OFF THE LIGHT BRIGADE” (1967 version)

Best wishes and happy collecting!

I was sceptical about all this HD stuff when it came out and had a relatively good TV but, having upgraded with Sky and Blue ray etc it is a huge difference and know exactly what you mean about the films clarity. I never need much of an excuse to watch films but, this all adds to it.

Not related directly to war but, I have just finished 7 films of George Formby which, not having properly watched them since I was a kid with my Gran was a good laugh. British slapstick war boosting morale movies but, good all the same.

Wonder how that figure entertaining troops would be viewed by the collecting world?

Do you remember the Arthur Askey film where he is convinced that he is King Arthur? Some great scenes with universal carriers.

Martin...

Can't remember it from the top of my head but, AA is great I really like all the old films suppose thats something from being brought up mostly by my gran. Will have to try and find that one as I have some films with him in or, more likely, just forgot. I find I am doing that..... I think

So difficult to choose a top ten but here it is

Battle Of Britain
Zulu
Angels one five
Went the day well
Dambusters
Ice cold in Alex

Next of kin
Bridge too far
Dunkirk

We've discussed Went The Day Well before and it's worth bringing up again. Kind of a "Red Dawn" for Britain.

“CHARGE OFF THE LIGHT BRIGADE” (1967 version)

I have the DVD but it's not a favorite of mine as the main characters are pretty unpleasant, even the "hero" and there's a lot of uniform flaws once the action gets to the Crimea. I understand that there was more of the Balaclava battle shot but the "cut" made the Charge look like it was the only action.

I don't think the film should have concocted an affair between Fanny Duberly and Cardigan, or had her played as a gargoyle. She was a well thought of woman from what I have read.

Totally agree with your comments. What is little known is that Tony Richardson, the director, had the best of historical advisers, the Mollo brothers, who had prepared illustrations of all the correct uniforms down to the last detail. Having seen all these he decided it would look better to put the entire brigade into the crimson overalls of the 11th Hussars and over ruled them. At this the Mollos left the production not wishing to be associated with it any further.

Arnhem44mad....

You surprised me there mate. By any chance have you a copy of a magazine called I think armourer or similar on sale at WHSmith about recent events and the like with shows and war re-enactors?? (and has a bit about the war and peace show) as the pics you posted of yourself on the forum seem very similar to the mags front cover as I quickly perused and bought some this morning.

You may just be a cover boy!!!

Another good home front film is Hope and Glory. A interesting look at the Blitz from a childs viewpoint. As for the Charge of the Light Brigade, I liked it but I hated the historical inacuracies. George McDonald Frazier, the author of the Flashman books among others said " I don't know on what authority Mrs Duberly can be accused of misconduct, but if none exits ( and I have heard of none) then her portrayal in the film is inexcuseable".

I'm reading Flashman at the Charge right now to my daughter (she can read but it's father /daughter bonding thing) Flashman states that he tried with Fanny earlier but she's really a good friend.
