I thought I'd lost this pic - just come across it by accident :)

This was my first toy soldier collection - the one that led me on the long slippery slope...............

I thought it might be interesting to some as it contains all of the 'Opening Moves 1914' releases up to the date the photo was taken - in May 2008)

It is good you have been able to track down the original cause of your on going malady Roy. Still I can see why you succumbed, that was a great start to your collection. Robin.

Nice collection Roy! You just need the 1914 RHA 13-pounder to keep those Germans at bay.

Thank you Brendan :salute:: As you see, I did actually add the 13 pounder to my collection when it was released later on :)

Roy;

That is very impressive !

Thank you for posting.

I collected all the foot sets in this series and I was always disappointed that Britains never did the French 75mm gun, the iconic artillery piece and image of the 1914 campaign. They missed a great piece of the history in that absence. -- Al

That is a beautiful set. I have the Zulu War version. Wish I have picked up on the WWI releases when they first came out.

Al,

I remember hoping when I bought the British 18 pounder Gun team - that Britains would bring out a French and a German version. Britains had a lot of problems producing the British 18 Pounder set that led to many delays. I guess that put them off doing French and German versions.

It is a shame they did not delve very much further into the Opening Moves 1914 era - It has always interested me personally more than the following trench warfare.

The book by Barbara Tuchman 'The Guns of August' was one of the best I have read on that period - some superb insights into the opening campaign.

It was indeed a beautiful set - but I think the Zulu war version has the edge on it :salute::

What an awesome set. So much amazing stuff was coming out back then. The local toy soldier shop I used to go to before they closed their doors was a WB dealer, and I used to love seeing all of their various offerings. I built up a nice WB WW1 collection that I supplemented with some ONTC Great War sets. Thanks for the memories.

Roy, from my POV, Britains missed a chance with this series. I would have loved to be able to build a battery of French 75mm guns. Wouldn't have needed all the horses and such, just the guns, caisson, gunners, all in the early war unis. Would have been beautiful. Would liked to have seen some more early war cavalry as well. -- Al

Roy I started collecting at around the same time with many of the same figures. And so I can tell you its an illness that is longstanding. I still have many of the WB opening moves figures including the six horse gun team and limber - still one of my favourite items.

I challenge fellow collectors to post pictures of their original purchases that got them hooked (if they have them of course!). Mine would be WB ACW figures from the early 2000's with the 'Art of War' series. Still have them but no photo I am afraid as they reside in Kiwiland at the moment.

Thanks Joe - You're welcome :salute:: Just been rummaging in the loft and found some old stuff from when I was in the W Britain collectors club (2007 till 2010) - catalogues, price lists, Standards etc. a few more memories

Must agree Al :salute:: I also would have liked more cavalry. Like the 18 pounder there was a long wait for the French cavalry to finally arrive. There was only ever one Uhlan figure - all the other Cavalry had three figures. It's a shame it all just fizzled out.

It was a good time to start collecting Gary :) What a great idea - fellow collectors posting pictures of their original purchases that inspired them to collect :salute:: I hope it takes off - would be very interesting.
