Did anyone watch the 1st episode of this new 1920s Atlantic City HBO series last night?

I loved it and am hooked on it already. I thought the story was engaging, the acting excellent and the period production values on target. As a fan of HBO's The Wire I was happy to see that Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar from The Wire) is a cast member. He and Andre Royo (Bubs) were 2 of my favorite characters on The Wire. Congrats to Martin Scorsese Mark Wahlberg, and Terence Winter (The Sopranos) for bringing this drama to television.

What do others think so far?

I don't get HBO but I'm hoping to rent the series some day. Steve Buscemi is fun to watch.

I think it's gonna be the best show from HBO in years.( yes I like True Blood but this will be better)I was in A.C. Friday and everywhere you looked there was a poster about this show. They are very proud of it.

This series is a sure winner. Found the first episode outstanding and was hooked right away. Loved the way the show was able to transport me back to the time and place. Buscemi was great and I look forward to seeing his character develope further. My wife's parents (and herself, later on) spent their vacations in AC for years and my wife had fun pointing out actual locations and buildings that had exsisted (or still did in the 40's, 50's, and 60's, anyway). Just really enjoyed it. -- Al

I liked it quite a bit. Nice mixture of history, sex and violence. I especially liked the last line to Steve Buscemi's character: "You can't be half a gangster anymore." I hint of serious hard boiled violence to come.

Buscemi has got to be the ugliest actor to ever appear in front of a camera but boy is he good!
Looking forward to this series. Does anyone know if this will be like The Sopranos, meaning it could go on for years or is there a set amount of episodes?
Also read in todays paper that director Martin Scorsese is doing a mob film with Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Robert DiNiro. How can that not be good?

I think I remember reading that this series is to be 12 episodes in length. -- Al

HBO does it again, instantly giving me a fix from lack of "true blood"!!!!

Soon to be great series. I am anxiously awaiting ep 2!

I have been waiting months for this episode...

sorry to see Entourage and Hung's season close...

but Buscemi will fill the gap nicely...

my only concern is that it conflicts with Sunday night football by a bit...

but HBO re-runs it an hour later after the first showing usually...

It was good. I'm fascinated by the the way the Atlantic City board walk looked back then compared to now. It was also very interesting to see a young Al Capone getting his start.

Here's something about Steve Buscemi many of you may not know:

Engine 55 FDNY

The station drew attention 11 September 2001 because its firefighters were early on the scene when the World Trade towers fell, since the station is nearby. Several of its firemen died and their names are on a plaque in front of the station, with a large angel that hints at an Italian heritage looking over them. "The bravest of the brave" becomes more than a phrase above those names.

And every time Engine 55’s team roars off to another fire they take the memory of those missing firemen with them, for another plaque on the side of the truck lists them.

A poignant note was sounded in 2002 when actor Steve Buscemi went to the station and spent two weeks, 12 hours a day, shoveling through the twin towers’ rubble to help find the remains of Engine 55’s missing firemen. He refused to be photographed or take interviews, despite his celebrity status, because he was there to help his old unit. Buscemi was an Engine 55 firefighter from 1980-1984.

As you can see from this 2006 poster Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt (Jimmy Darmody) worked together on Delirious:

Michael Pitt was in a little known movie called Funny Games which was scary in a very real life way.

Thanks for posting this info. I had no idea Buscemi was a fireman. I wonder why he switched careers. He certainly looks more suited for a fireman than an actor. He is a great actor, though. Brings a special imprint to his parts. -- Al
