Britains Hollowcast Egyptian Lancer remake (1 Viewer)

Hi Brad - glad you like him. If he had been complete - I don't think I would have adapted him quite so much as I have. Maybe a re-touch or even re-paint in his original colours. But as he was SO incomplete - I thought - well - why not?

I don't do that many (unfortunately) as raw materials are getting scarcer these days - but I do have a "proper" drill stand in my Garage/workshop. However, I usually drill tiny holes like this without too much pressure - very slowly - and VERY CAREFULLY. I do pop on safety glasses for this - you are only issued with one set of "mince pies" - after all.

Shouldn't be too long to finish him now - as I want him TOY side of soldier - and nice and glossy too. I think he's turning out just how I pictured him in my mind's eye - just lovely! :Djohnnybach

Short question for all- I often see very damaged toy soldiers for sale for cheap at tag sales, etc, and was wondering if there is anyone who would buy them from me if I can get them for cheap, as I think they should find a good home. If anyone would be interested, please PM me and tell me the top price for a single fot or mtd soldier, that is damaged, and if I see some for below that price, I will buy them and ship them to you for the cost of purchase+shipping, no profit (ok, maybe I tack on $5 for handling ;-) ).

Hi Sandor - that's a very difficult one to answer.

How damaged is damaged? What is the subject matter involved? - One you are interested in - or not?

It really is so subjective. I (like you) often see stuff which really is very poor. I think you just have to be there yourself - see an item - and think -

(a) yes - I can do something with that -- or

(b) Too far gone - not my period - or even Yuk! don't like that!

Sure - by all means - buy them - photograph them - and post them BUT- you may end up with just a pile of junk on your hands - though the melting-pot can always find a home for even the most mutilated piece.

I often just see something like the one I am working on now - and can see the potential immediately. I think that if you were to find an old hollowcast piece by Britains - you are ALMOST certain to find it a home - somewhere.

As to how much? - how long is a piece of string. If you want it - you want it - if you don't - you don't and you would be stuck with it!

I was given my piece. If pushed - I would have paid about $2-3 - as I knew I would have to buy spare parts. It probably has little re-sale value - BUT I don't buy things to re-sell them. I buy them because firstly, I like them - and secondly, just like a challenge.

Hope that helps. johnnybach

New arm fitted, touched in - and dried pretty quickly under a lamp - so first coat of varnish applied to the body of the figure. He should dry thoroughly overnight - so will have a look at him tomorrow - and if okay - will have a go at the base which is still a bit rough. Once I have tidied him up enough - then he will probably be okay for a second coat of varnish - and be finished.

Quite pleasing - for something that was destined for the bin a couple of weeks ago - and is maybe around a similar age to me. Does that say something about me too?

Fixed the arm to the body with a dab of Araldite Rapid (two part). Then - when dry (15 mins) a tiny roll of milliput goes into the depression that is just dampened with super-glue and worked in with a Mark I index finger until level. A dab of super-glue wiped over it (makes a crust). An hour later - touch in with Ivory Gloss paint (Humbrol 41). Three hours under a lamp - first coat Humbrol Gloss varnish.

Voila!

See how it looks tomorrow. jb

I felt that this repair needed a better pic than the one I did around midnight last night, so I took a bit of time - after finishing off the base for Lance (his Mum liked the name, okay?), I looked out one of my larger books - and found this super picture "Gordons Last Dispatch" by Terrence Cuneo - and used it as a backdrop for him. Hope you like these three pics - and approve of my repair. - johnnybach.

Excellent jb, that is a really beautiful job {bravo}}{bravo}}:salute:::salute:::salute::

Cheers

Martyn:)

Thanks Martyn - he doesn't look so sad any more - which is the nicest thing for me. He's also my first Egyptian - so I can look at your collection elsewhere on the forum - with a little less longing now!

It was great fun to see him "coming back", johnnybach

Great job you have done on him JB and saved him from the melting pot. Very nicely done !!

Magnificent!{bravo}}{bravo}} I love the Egyptian uniforms of this period, as the are something different, like Ken Osen said. He has turned out quite nice, and I love your modifications! I also love the backdrop you chose...

I had the impression from the stallholder that it was more like "landfill" actually Scott. I could have cried though, - he told me whilst we were chatting, "Pity you didn't come last week - I dumped a pile of arms and legs and things - 'cos nobody wants 'em these days"

Needless to say, I put him right on that - and he said he would keep an eye out for me for the future. Not sure whether he will though. One saved anyway. ^&grin jb

Well - there you go Sandor - glad you like him too. I remembered that illustration after I had turned in last night - so seemed a nice one to use for the background - as the photo I took in poor light didn't do poor Lance justice. I think the fez is just a whizz - and really brightens up quite a plain uniform. I will certainly be keeping an eye out for any more like him - for sure.

Have a good time in your new school - and enjoy every moment. Believe me - it passes only too quickly. Bon chance johnnybach

Righto - this is the very last picture of him - as I have just given him his final coat of Tamiya Acrylic Clear Gloss. He is now finally completed. johnnybach

JB, I've just read through this thread and I must say it turned out just fine. Is this the first of many for your Sudan collection?

{bravo}}

Jeff

Hi Jeff - Yes, I hope so - though I don't think I can rely on turning up many more like him in the same way. Looks like I may actually have to buy some! (Castings tjough - of course!). jb

Well done, John! He looks great, but now you need to add the rest of the troop ;)

Prost!
Brad

Yes Brad - but what are the chances of me turning up another four like him in the same way? Nice to know that the Officer - is just an arm change though - and if I had wanted to - I could have "elevated" him by giving him a sword arm. If I ever do see any more though - I'll have them like a shot!

It was a very pleasant little diversion though to re-furbish him - and I honestly had no idea when I picked him up - exactly what I had in my hand. I had to open a few books to find that - but - all part of the fun of Toy Soldiering eh?^&grin jb

Hello Brad - I have been in touch with a producer of TS - and found that one does a re-cast version of the Egyptian Lancer figure. The upshot is - that I will be ordering some to put alongside my rescue - and make up a look-alike set 115 - around Xmas time! I will do them to look exactly like my rescue - with an Officer figure too - so they will be distinguishable from the genuine article.

So Lance will have some new chums soon! johnnybach
