I thought I'd share my first attempt at building a small log cabin for a diorama I've started. I was keen to buy one, but member Larry Allan encouraged me to have a go with constructing my own. I didn't want something big and was aiming for the 'blockhouse' look opposed to a pitched roof with chimney type.

I used 8mm dowel and some plain model Balsa wood and used standard PVA wood glue. Later using 'Woodland Scenic' earth colour paints to do the weathering/dry-brushing. I only used 'Burnt Umber & 'Stone Gray' colours and watered them down a tad.

After cutting the dowel lengths, I roughed up the ends a bit with a craft knife and make them look like they'd been 'axed'. Another trick I found useful to help hide any excess glue was to sprinkle fine saw dust in the joins while the glue was still wet and then using bits of real tree bark, stuck it on the dowel to take away that clean look.

I made the door and frame out of the same Balsa wood I used on the roof and fitted it before gluing the roof down. The door actually opens and is attached with two tiny bits of ribbon and the hand handle I carved out of a match stick.

Overall it took me about 6hrs in total over a weekend and I did let it dry a bit in stages. If you're organised you could probably complete it much quicker, but I wasn't in a rush and was experimenting along the way.

I thought it came out ok and plan to build another bigger one soon.

It's well worth the time and effort and stacks of fun!

Cheers!

You'll be pleased to hear he had some influence.......^&grin

Just getting caught up here on TF with having to move rooms and such. What a GREAT job, hey fellows!
I only suggested that Toddy give it a whirl and see what happens. Well what happened was this great hut. :salute:: :salute::

I am now inspired to give it a try myself.

GREAT Job!

A big thank you to all those that have popped in for a look and all the 'Likes' and feedback.

Since joining the forum many moons ago I have learned some much from so many about the hobby and as a result gained the confidence to have a crack at a few things along the way. The 'cabin' being one of those attempts. Now that I've completed one I'll have a go at building others and will post those with TF once completed.

I have to save a special mention to 'Brissy' Wayne who has shared so much with TF and in person and taught me a thing or two along the way.:salute::

Cheers!

Very well constructed log cabin Mike. That gives me a few more ideas and the diorama is a classic as well Regards Greg.

Greg...

I figured out an easy way to build these really fast...

I cut a landscape timber (4" x 4")...
into a 6" length...
that I used as a solid interior frame to build around...
once it was built...
I lifted it off the timber...
perfectly straight and symmetrical...

they came out really fast and straight...

I cut my dowels on a chop saw...
the beat them up a dull piece of metal...

The idea of using the 4"X4" Land Scaping Timber (as a base form) is brilliant. Sounds like it takes away the frustration of pieces not lining up and a platform to support the structure as you build.
