Building a Sudan Gunboat (1 Viewer)

Very nice job. You look like a man with proper tools and the skill to use them..Though it looks like you have a plan, if you need to ask about anything, please let me know...Michael

Thanks Scott

Photo 1 - I've glued on the hull and painted it
Photo 2 - I've stained and varnished the 3 decks
Photo 3 - A bit of a look without the cabins
Photo 4 - A main deck cabin in the making
Photo 5 - The general look it will have

Photos 2 & 3 are later in the sequence

I've got a smoke stack going and have an idea on how to make the stairs but I don't know what to do about the railings for the upper decks. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry the pictures are so small. Sometimes I have trouble posting them.

Anyone: How do you get this to work
Click this bar to view the full image.
In other words how do you start with a small image that you then click on to enlarge?

Just saw these, now...Wonderful work, just excellent...I am very jealous..As to railings, I bought small chain from the jewelry aisle of a craft store and purchased small brass brads to put through the links at intervals, banging the nails into the deck. I have seen some buy small chicken wire fence and cut a strip out allowing for legs to be glued into holes on the deck..Never tried the last idea but that might be the easiest way...Michael

Russell,
You're giving me the bug!!!! I'm almost finished with my deck, I'll have to keep the tools out! Very nice to see, and we have Michael to thank for guys soon to be spending lots of time building small boats:)
Mike

Wow Russell you don't hang about do you. That looks great !! fantastic!! marvelous !! and other such words.

In regards to your question, that occurs when you upload your photos to photobucket and then link them here.

Thanks Scott

How did you get the rivet look? Michael

Michael, Thank you for the railing idea. I just might give it a try. As to the 'rivets' I'll explain tomorrow. A picture will go a long way to making it clear.

Scott, I do use photo bucket, but don't know how to link from there to Treefrog. Presently, I just dump my photo bucket photos onto the desktop and pick them up there. I don't want to put you to too much trouble (says he) but where might this link be found :):)
Thank you all for your encouragement.:)

Hi Russell

If you go to your photbucket account and then put your cursor over the picture that you want. A box will appear beneath it, you should see IMG Code. Right click on the box next to it and copy it, then come back to the forum and right click and paste into yourt thread. ( I usually have two browsers open when I do this as it makes it easier).

Another way it to do the same but right below the picture is a box next to the file name. Check this and keep going until you have all the pictures selected that you need. Then at the bottom of the page you will see generate HTML and IMG code. Click this, the right click in the box IMG images for message boards copy then come back to your post right clock and paste. I use this method if I am posting a bunch of photos with no sense of order.

Hope that helps

Scott

Actually, don't click on the bar of the first photo to make it bigger. It will be out of focus. Scott just taught me this new method of posting - thank you, thank you, thank you, and it's an old picture with low resolution.

This is what I used to make the rivets. Again you inspired me Michael when you mentioned how you found your materials, and so I entered an arts & crafts store. I felt very strange there like Tim the Tool Man might have. But, along with some other stuff, I found the beads you see in the photo. The half-sphere beads sit on a transparent ribbon. So with scissors I cut a strip the length I wanted and applied it to my model ship like you would scotch tape. Then with a couple of coats of paint the strip of beads was now rivets. It was really easy. In the 'real world' these beads are used to decorate paper with borders and frames.

The internet site of the product is www.heidiswapp.com and the item # is HS64110 It's called BLING

The beads in the second photo don't work as well. The glue is too sticky and the beads do not sit as regularly on the tranparent ribbon.

Again thanks Scott. I was a bit frustrated not being able to post my photos properly. Now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'll experiment with different resolutions and different lighting.

Great looking vessels gentlemen. It makes me want to get busy on an Ironclad I've been pondering.

Nice work on the boat. This will probably cause a run on deck guns:mad: And me without my U-boat. Did you guys see the new article on TS&MF?

Thanks Vamp. You wrote,

. Do you know where one might buy some deck guns - any ideas? I've been pondering how to make/design my own, and so I am open to suggestions, including buying.

Captain, if your ironclad becomes anything like your Virginia house it will be a beaut. Ever since I saw a photo of your place on another thread, I've been dreaming of living in the country.
Maybe something like the one below :)

Actually I don't and that worries me a bit. I took your 24 inch length and your 8 inch width as a start, looked for the materials for a paddle wheel, couldn't find anything and so decided it would be a steam boat, I looked at your photos and used them for the basic design. From here I'm not too sure where I'm going. I've begun looking at the K&C boat for ideas. Also, I'm open to suggestions for the guns, the anchor chain mechanism (I've got chain), etcetera.

Looks like we have a naval arms race shaping up here, gentlemen!

Russell, great idea on the rivets, they look fantastic! And don't feel sheepish about going in to Michael's. OK, so maybe it's heavy on crafts. But there's usually a good deal of eye candy there ;)

Prost!

Russell, you can make your own guns. I made maxim mg's out of wood strips.. For the deck guns get 2 different size dowel rod. You will need a thin basswood strip for your shield and some piece of tapered wood for your deck mount. Get your shield squared. Cut a small section of the thicker rod and glue to one side of the shield. Cut a longer section of the narrow rod and glue to the other side..Sometimes you can find some craftwood shape that might already be tapered narrow to the top and spreading to the deck..If not, get the thick dowel, cut it down and taper it yourself..Find a pic of a gun already modeled for the right proportions and paint..No one will know that it is not metal..Michael

Dear Russ, great idea on the rivets. I bought mine loose and hand glued each one and hoped to get the spacing right..I will use your method on my next ship, probably an ACW monitor type ironclad...Michael

You could have a look at:

(recommended by several forum members here) and see if any of their offerings tickled yer fancy.

Great work on the Gunboat!

Hi Michael, you said,

Excellent, and I hope you'll show us photos when you start :)
Cheers

Wraith, thanks for the tip. I'll have a look now.

Okay, I would like some help finding some stuff too. I am serching for the following items:
Ship running lights (OR how to make)
Ship Spot lights or signal lights
A mast and rigging
Navy flags
Portholes and railings

I am attempting to built a ship similar to the K&C ship.

question: How did you make the sides of the ship. I have the base but having difficulty finding the right material to make the bendable sides.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I like this thread. Keep showing pictures as it really helps me understand.
