ALL,

Maybe you have been watching the SOHK auctions these past few weeks, but GOOD LORDY LAWD some pieces have sold for unbelievable prices. I remember when I bought my first SOHK pieces from Peter Lalos, he told me "John, you and I are probably the only ones who collect SOHK". He told me that a little over a year ago and now I am watching pieces go for over a thousand (one full stack of high society). One of the terraces just went for $1400 and change this evening. So, I am a little saddened because what used to be so fun to collect is now getting out of my hobby financial reach and not to mention frustrating!!! Yes, I know the pieces are worth what the public buys them for, but holy smokes am I bummed that I'll never get a shot at these pieces because the bar has been raised so high. Congrats to the sellers though because business is business.

Well, I thought I would just vent I guess. My "pre-divorce" sale is over and Zlang and Peter bailed me out of a few pieces, to which I thank them. But nothing on the other collections. Fortunately, I cut a deal with the wife to sell everything but SOHK....and IC...and maybe Ancient Egypt. But, sadly all of my STAR WARS,other K&C and 21st Century has to go. I know there is zero sympathy out there, but a little empathy would be nice my fellow brother and sisters. I know I shoulda, coulda, woulda, but I am just "Lost every bid on SOHK depresso boy" right now. So, to all you toy soldier collecting HIGH ROLLERS out there...nothing but RESPECT MAN! I wish I had it like that...for toy soldiers that is.

The search goes on...

Often time it is one person that makes a world of difference. This is a thinly traded collectible/market and it does not take much to move the needle. Like yourself, sticker shock has hit me, and I am not a shy fellow. My guess the next time these show up, the prices will be lower, I think.

Interesting posts, I agree that there have been times when I thought I was the only guy looking for a set to suddenly have it grabbed up by a couple of guys with deep pockets deciding to fight over it. These sorts of things happen but if you are patient you will eventually find what you are looking for and for a price you can live with. Don't forget to let your collecting friends know what you are looking for because in several cases a friend has helped me fill a very big gap in my collection. Good luck on the sales.

Good luck John with your marital woes and moving onto a different life.

I long ago resigned myself that there were others with bigger pockets or those who would pay more than I thought an item was worth (worth being a relative term). However, I also believe that everything shows up again, enabling a collector to purchase it. Patience is the watchword.

Brad,

Well, I saved the marriage by cuttting a deal with the boss. What kind of deal? "A deal-deal" a la Don Rickles in the movie "Kellys Heroes"..Man, I really appreciate y'alls kind words...it means a lot.

Thanks,

John

Interesting thread and I have sat on both sides of the fence. Nowadays I am more opportunistic unless I really can't live without something. That feeling is limited to one or 2 pieces nowadays. That said, the recent bidding in my opinion will not be sustained and patience will really be a true virtue. In most cases, more than 1 of these items was made! More will show up.

On another note, I will be looking through my own collection at duplicates and no longer wants, might as well put them out there while the iron is hot!

It is the way of the world. Some can afford, some cannot. some have little value of money (for a variety of reasons too much, no sense etc) and will pay whatever for something they think they want or, actually want. I know a chap who buys things from e-bay, auction houses etc and pays a lot of money for items and, half the things he buys he has no interest in. when asked why he buys he states boredom.

When these items go for this money you usually see a hord of them quickly placed by people eager to get some cash. This usually does not work and then prices will return to normality after this one off spike.
