Castings I have painted (1 Viewer)

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

JB, Like them very much

These were painted by my wife (who is a bit of an artist in her own right :D ) castings are recasts from SoldierPac. Great shame they stopped producing.

The original was seen for sale at one of the London shows last year.

Jeff

My son has the original, a gift from fellow collector Doug Luna.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Very nice done Johnny as to be expected. Nice seeing that set again as well Jeff, your wife is very talented.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Is it just me - or do you think that it's nice when you see what someone else's hand has done to the original version? I understand that there may be copyright issues involved in the SALE of items that are still being produced. Bu I just love to see other talented people's versions of the original thing.

For me, that's a great part of the attraction of doing something yourself - on what is essentially a blank canvas.

Agree - Disagree???? johnybach

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Today's post is a fvourite of mine which is made up from castings by Dorset Soldiers once again. It is The Band of the Royal Marines, circa 1830 with a Colour Party and Escort.

The next photo shows the Colour Party added

The next photo shows the Colour Party a bit more close-up

Points to make here, are that the band is non-standard - and some of the instruments might be a bit early for 1830 - BUT - all were around at that time so COULD have been in a British band at the time. A case in point is the figure at the rear with a Bombardon.

There was a record of a Bombardon (helical coil type) being played in an Austrian band in 1829. My British band is CIRCA 1830 - so COULD in theory have had one. SO.....I put one in. It was difficult to do though - as the right arm showing, is made up from four pieces.

The hand was attached to the instrument. A lower cuff and forearm was cut from a "spare". The forarm came from my "bits" box. The top arm with epaulette came from another suitable spare - whilst the elbow was milliput.
There were two pins used - one for shoulder - one for cuff to forearm.

Other interesting early instruments are the Orchestra Horn (like a French Horn - but no valves) and the Ophicleid (front rank) which is a precursor of the Tuba of today (as is the Bombardon). I also added a triangle player - from another Dorset Soldiers band - but adapted the figure to fit a Marine. Note also the Long Drum - with drummer wearing a waistcoat - to hide the drum straps.

Very colourful - quite tricky - but a real joy to paint and play with once completed.

Hope you like this one, which is my casting offering from Dorset Soldiers. johnnybach

By the way - it's now getting easier to photo and post - thanks Scott for the help and advice

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Hi JB, it's not very often you see a Regency period band, you have made a splendid job on these.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Hi jeff - thanks for that - I just liked their colours at first, but then once I got cracking painting them, I started to wonder - well, what else would have been available then? Tricky that one - so needed to read up a bit. I added to the band, bit by bit - as I learned more about instruments. Thank goodness for the Internet!!

Then I thought - what about a Colour Party?

So - did a bit more research - and eventually, Giles Brown came up with some pictures of Ensigns - and that was it!

What you see there took about a year to finish - in bits and pieces like that. It really gave me a lot more confidence to tackle tricky subjects and time periods.
That's what I hoped to do up-front with the Highland Band question I began with in the forum. I am still on target to start that around March.

I have been having a look at your Alma castings - very impressed with them - I want some too - but will have to wait a bit yet - have a few more bits to finish. I have about 12 more Mounties to go - before I finish the RCMP Band - with 36 in it. Easy to do - but a lot of 'em.

Anyway, glad you like 'em my friend. johnnybach

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Very nice johnny, I am really liking your work. There is a mounted regency set of lifeguard/horseguards on the ATS which I think would look nice in your collection :D:D:D

Don't forget to post pictures when it is done :p

Johnny,

They are really quality castings, if you have a look at Michel's (Mardasson) profile page in one of his albums there are quite a few photo's of the castings available.

Whilst we are talking Elephants! :D Here's a Tradition of London Elephant Battery.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Now you're talking Jeff - that';s a bit more up my street - I do have a weakness for guns! I DO like that - lots. I will have to choose the right one however, ' cos I don't think my cabinet could support more than one of those,

Lovely job that.

Tomorrow will see me posting some Asset Guards. Do you think the title is right for this post now though - as I seem to have strayed very far from the original one? Can we change titles to something like " Glossies from Castings" I'm still pretty new at this so would appreciate some advice.

Johnny, your going to love me then!:rolleyes::D:D I've got photos of loads of different artillery sets which I have painted over the years.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Hi Scott - having established that ATS is Alexanders Toy Soldiers - and that they DO castings (around half the cost of painted versions). I will have a look. However, I have a confession to make - I have fallen for their Coldstream Guard foot band, hook line and stinker!

I know it's silly at my age - but there is such a thing as "love at first sight" - and with me and the c.1815 Guards - it's the real thing - I'm afraid.

I don't know how I'm going to break the news to the Commandante - although she should be quite used to it by now.

However, they will have to get in line ( no pun intended) - but I will be having a date with some Jocks before that - as that's how I began my new career with the forum.

Must crack on now - Mounties to touch up (whoops!)

NB Does the title of this thread still fit - or would it be better to change it to something like " Glossies from Castings" - just a thought - as I seem to have strayed a long way from the original title?

Jeff - How can you say I'm going to love you for your artillery - when I have just declared how I've fallen for a Guards Band? I know you might have some big artillery (I just thought you were pleased to see me!) - but they are so PRETTY!

However - if you must brag - show me your big guns then! (As Basil Brush used to say - "Boom Boom!).

[NB. just what the Americans will get from that message - goodness knows!!)

Jeff - I only have a few of Jihn Eden's castings - as I have only recently come across his site. I agree - they are great. I actually have some camels from Dorset - I'll photo them tomorrow and put them on.

Is there anything you DON'T have??? johnnybach

Hi - Scott , Jeff and I have been chatting off-line, and think that a change of title to that suggested might better describe what the original post has developed into. If You could change it - maybe it would fit better. johnnybach

Actually, I don't have anything! I don't collect gloss figures only matt from K&C and John Jenkins. A bit more than a little odd I know, but I only paint figures in Humbrol Gloss for others.......

Jeff

Hi johnny,

I have changed the title to "Castings I have painted" as it is in the glossy section, I didn't see the need to put that.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks Johnny for posting pictures of your fine glossy collection. The castings are painted very nice and I enjoyed viewing them. Maybe, I will get inspired to finish painting the many castings I have laying around. John

Hi leadman - glad you like them - but castings lying around? They will catch they're death of cold without a coat or two on! Get cracking right away - is my advice. johnnybach:D
