Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings
Today's post is a fvourite of mine which is made up from castings by Dorset Soldiers once again. It is The Band of the Royal Marines, circa 1830 with a Colour Party and Escort.
The next photo shows the Colour Party added
The next photo shows the Colour Party a bit more close-up
Points to make here, are that the band is non-standard - and some of the instruments might be a bit early for 1830 - BUT - all were around at that time so COULD have been in a British band at the time. A case in point is the figure at the rear with a Bombardon.
There was a record of a Bombardon (helical coil type) being played in an Austrian band in 1829. My British band is CIRCA 1830 - so COULD in theory have had one. SO.....I put one in. It was difficult to do though - as the right arm showing, is made up from four pieces.
The hand was attached to the instrument. A lower cuff and forearm was cut from a "spare". The forarm came from my "bits" box. The top arm with epaulette came from another suitable spare - whilst the elbow was milliput.
There were two pins used - one for shoulder - one for cuff to forearm.
Other interesting early instruments are the Orchestra Horn (like a French Horn - but no valves) and the Ophicleid (front rank) which is a precursor of the Tuba of today (as is the Bombardon). I also added a triangle player - from another Dorset Soldiers band - but adapted the figure to fit a Marine. Note also the Long Drum - with drummer wearing a waistcoat - to hide the drum straps.
Very colourful - quite tricky - but a real joy to paint and play with once completed.
Hope you like this one, which is my casting offering from Dorset Soldiers. johnnybach
By the way - it's now getting easier to photo and post - thanks Scott for the help and advice
