Castings I have painted (2 Viewers)

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Some more UK suppliers of castings.
Asset
ATS
Yeomanry Miniatures
Sarum Soldiers
Tradition
Country Scenes

And yes,Johnny, you did get the colours the wrong way round again!! Horrible idle little man. Three hours on the naughty step with no cups of tea from the Commandante. Maybe that will teach you to get it right.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Heh-heh-hh trooper, I did it on purpose 'cos I knew you'd put me on jankers for that ! Oh my - someone will have to explain that term to some younger folks!

Yes, I've used Asset, Sarum (first time round) and Tradition. Not used the other three - but will look them up later.

I'm thinking of putting these in Alpha order later - and posting pics of examples I have done - along with specemin prices of a few - so others can have a look. Perhaps invite people to post THEIR versions too - especially when I don't know them - or don't have a specemin to show.

Look-out they've kicked off again. see ya

Tea and wads from thee Commandante???

For you Tommy, Xmas ist over!! johnnybach

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Incidently, Johnny, forgot to add to my last post, the BMSS no longer produce their range of figures. I have tried to find out why on several occassions but to no avail. It would appear that they can no longer be bothered. I have offered to buy the masters from them but all enquiries seem to vanish in a labyrinth of committees and sub committees. As it is now over twelve months without a response I have lost interest. Their loss.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Okay trooper - I will delete this one from the list. Last time I ordered stuff from them - it had been outsourced to another address. They sent me the wrong product - and only sent me the correct replacement, after I returned the wrong one they had sent - and never acknowledged or reimbursed my postage. Nuff said, perhaps it's just as well.

By the way, tried to raise ATS on Internet, but all it shows is "2011 Udate in progress"

Tried to raise Yeomanary Miniatures - again, no joy - just found a message from you saying that Brian had been ill?? Proprieter???

and can't find Country Scenes at all

half-time over - back to Rugby - johnnybach

Just had a look at ATS and everything is up and running. Yeomanry hasn't quite finished his website at the moment, it should be operating sometime in the next few weeks. He is registered with Treefrog as Yeoman and you can PM him that way if you want. Country Scene ia a new company and I don't think they have a website yet. Trooper

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Hi trooper - thanks for the update on the three sites mentioned. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong - but "ATS" is trying to sell me tyres, and "ATS Toy Soldiers" seems to be the one - but all I get there is a blue screen with ATS logo at the top and large letters saying "2011 UPDATE IN PROGRESS"

Maybe it's just me or do I need to input something else? I had never heard of them before - what is it that you type in? johnnybach

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Aha - Now that brings up Alexanders Toy Soldiers - and that web-site is all about PAINTED model soldiers. What my post is all about is being able to obtain unpainted castings from manufacturers that do both painted and unpainted.

You see - as I have mentioned before - MY hobby lies in the painting. I just can't see the point of buying a painted model toy soldier and putting it in a cabinet. Less still, keeping it in a box, a store cupboard, air-conditioned lock-up (seen it mentioned!) or a bank vault (I know one of those too!). I tried that with the Delprado painted range - and it felt MOST unsatisfying - FOR ME!

It might be fine for others - but for me, it definitely ain't!

Am I to understand that Alexanders Toy Soldiers = ATS?
Also, do they do castings versions of the ones advertised as painted ?

Sorry to seem so pedantic - but this is at the core of the point I'm trying to make. I like painting castings - as best I can - and then I keep them in a cabinet, where they can come out to play every now and then. They really feel like MINE then - as I have had a hand in how they look - and I just love it!!!

I am very sorry that some scoundrels copy and sell them. I'm even more sorry and somewhat peeved that this affects me - and others like me - as it appears to be stopping some folks selling castings - even though the scoundrels mentioned COULD buy a painted one and cast from that too!

The answer for me is to avoid sites like e-bay and buy from manufacturers and suppliers ONLY - and that's exactly what I do. The list I appear to be compiling is just that - a list of people that hobbyists like me can go to - and purchase a legitimate figure in either painted - or unpainted version. What I hope I'm doing, is show other members of this forum what can be achieved with a casting - even in such clumsy old hands as mine.

I have had a few hobbies in my time - but this one, for me, is simply the best - and I would like to share that!

All the best - johnnybach

ATS is Alexanders Toy Soldiers, I believe from what Trooper says is that they do castings.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Cheers Jeff - I will check that out with trooper. You see, this is where it all gets a bit confusing. I read through Alexanders Toy Soldier (Aka ATS) - and couldn't find any mention of them selling castings.

When in the past, I have rung up or e-mailed to ASK whether a company do unpainted versions of their painted wares - I have sometimes received quite a frosty response in the negative! Maybe they think I'm one of the scoundrels?

Never mind - as my old Grandma used to say "Life wasn't meant to be easy!"

Regards - johnnybach

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Hi Jeff - I have just taken my own advice and e-mailed ATS and asked them for clarification over whether they sell castings or not. Will advise - 'cos I have just seen a band I like on their site!

Also, another very low cost site for castings is " White Metal Mail" - run by a chap called John Parslow. He is a hobbyist, who just makes and sells a very limited range of castings ONLY ( doesn't sell painted). I have bought Napoleonic castings from him for around £2 each! (Prince August versions). Forgot all about them - but will photo later. johnnybach

I think this is a better picture of my German WW1 Field -gun from Irregular Miniatures, than the one I showed the other day (better light). Incidentally, the Jager standing firing at the top was the one-and-only time someone sent me a "freebie", as a thank-you for my order. So if your looking, thanks to them for that.

The Maxim machine-gun pair shown with them, was from Sarum Soldiers - who then ceased production - but has begun once again. I'm not sure whether Patrick sold the mould for this one - or whether it's still available from him.

These are my French Napoleonic Band (with others) by White Metal Mail ( cast byJohn Parslow), that I mentioned earlier. They are from Prince August moulds - and are about the cheapest castings I have ever bought. It's his hobby - and he confesses, he can't paint!
The project is ongoing for me - as I have a "stash" (is that the right word Baron?) of more band and some Dragoons waiting patiently for me to continue with them.

The Prince August range are quite good when painted, these look really nice!

TheRetreattoCorrunna.jpg

Last one for a bit - The Commandante says I have "other duties" to proceed with!

The Retreat to Corunna - 1809

This one is one of my favourites from Tradition of London. Bought as castings, I copied the famous painting of the scene in the snow (see on some front covers of Sharpe's Rifles). Had them for Xmas a couple of years ago - and just loved painting these. I really felt for the poor guy who has lost his boots. johnnybach

WW1 Austrian Field Gun from Fusilier Miniatures. I painted this for a Forum member a couple of years ago.

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Yes - that looks like the baby - German 7.7cm M 1916 field gun. I sort of lost interest in WW1 - and got onto more colourful painting. Must get back to this period, one day. This is a good example, though , of what we painters can do with a subject - and change from one colour scheme to another. jb

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

Jeff - I forgot to mention that some of the figures in my French Napoleonic Band are conversions. You may be able to make out the Jingling Johnny at the rear, but think two Duck-head trombones are a bit obscurred. These arms/instruments came from Dorset Soldiiers as replacement parts anmd were grafted on. Not always easy - as are not made for the figure, but good fun to do - and you end up with a unique figure at the end. If anyone wants a closer look - I will re-arrange the figures.

I might add that much of the inspiration for doing them comes from peeping at some of Obees figures on his website. I have tried to make my figures look like his - but not sure I'll ever be in "the maestro's" league.

BMSSFigures.jpg

Right-ho - washing up done, dog walked on we go. Sorry about slightly darker photo this time.

The above are some figures from castings by the BMSS that I bought and painted a while back - which I understand from trooper are no longer available from that organisation. Shame that, because they are really nice. Maybe they will come back again with a new owner.

In the foreground is a Colour Party of the Grenadier Guards around the 50's.
Rear on foot (left to right) are: Sergeant, 1st Grenadier Rgt. Foot Gds. 1831
Trooper, 1st Life Guards 1832: Captain 8th Kings Royal Irish Dragoons 1832;
Major, Rifle Brigade 1832; Sergeant 5th Dragoon Gds. 1832.

Finally there is a Kettledrummer, c.1933 of the Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers on a Skewbald Horse.

I must admit to favourites here - and the Irish Captain with the drawn sword and the Kettledrummer are mine.

In the background, by the way, is my Xmas present - which is a set of British Regimental Badges, originally given away by Texaco Oil company - for buying petrol. They could be collected and put into an album.

Hope you like this instalment. johnnybach

Re: Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders from Castings

You were asking which figures I make, well I made those regancy period figures in that photo.
