Hi,

I am relatively new to collecting, wanted help on which company has the most consistent 1/30 scale across historical periods.

Aim is to purchase a couple of figures per historical period, so want them all to be consistent with each other (as much is possible!).

Appreciate any help.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the hobby! If you're looking for breadth of coverage for historical eras, you can't go wrong with King & Country. You can look through their vast offerings right here on Treefrog's website.

Thanks for your reply Brendan, are King and Country consistent with 1/30 scale across the historical periods ?

I only ask, as I recently purchased two figures from first legion, a VNA Infantry advancing with RPG(VN01) and French 1st Light Infantry Sapper wielding axe(NAP0387),
the quality of which was really good, but they were noticeably different in size. Have read online that there modern figures are slimmer and shorter than there Napoleonic
range. First Legion did get back to me on this and said that is not the case withing the last five years, as previously different teams sculptured the figures.

Thanks for any help.

First Legion has, in the past, produced figures of slightly different scales for different eras.
But that may not be an issue now, check with FL fans (we only have so many).
When we started seriously collecting we tried to keep all of our figures from all Historical eras the same scale. We gave up. Some match better than others. You almost have to see them in person although Julie does a good job by picturing sets next to rulers/etc.
We have been collecting JJD recently and the scale is usually very good (WW1 men are smaller than Ancient Egyptians, for example. Also, character figures may be bigger from all manufacturers). K&C is serious about scale these days and may be a good bet but you may need JJD, TGM, FL and others to complete ranges of History than they don't cover.
For example, recently we mixed our older K&C Egyptians with JJD. See What Items Have I Acquired In The Last 2 Weeks and go back a few pages.
Happy collecting and keep posting.

Thanks for your reply, looks like K&C could be the way to go, but as you say, other manufacturers might be needed for certain historic eras.

Appreciate your help.

I seem to recall that King & Country made some of the Crusaders and Saracens closer to 1/32 scale than 1/30 scale like the remainder of their figures, but as Paddy noted, Treefrog posts pictures of side-by-side comparisons of figures.

The question of scale has always led to fraught discussions. King & Country tend to be a little larger than 1/30 while in some areas First Legion tends to be smaller than K & C. If your intent is to purchase figures from different companies, they may not go together. For example in WW II K & C would not work with First Legion but the latter would work with Britains and War Park. As I don’t collect many Napoleonics I couldn’t opine on scale differences but leaving that aside you also have stylistic differences to consider. The principal Napoleonic makers are King & Country and First Legion and stylistically they are quite different; it’s all a matter of choice. Personally, I prefer the Napoleonics made by First Legion but others prefer King & Country.

Thanks for all your replies, seems I was a bit naïve in thinking 1/30 scale would consistently be adhered to.

Napoleonic ranges across manufacturers vary hugely in size, from Kronprinz, majority of W Britains and later Thomas Gunn figures, John jenkins figures can also work together I would say.
FL being a slightly smaller than KP and WB, but still can work together, though there seems to be three different sculpt styles in WBritains 95th Rifles line, with their early ones not having little facial detail, then some figures being quite similar to FL in that the figures are all of a lean appearance and then Ken's sculpts. K&C being slightly larger. TCS French Infantry being huge and not working with the others, though they do have quite dramatic poses.

To each their own but I have found that among the manufacturers that I collect K&C has the most consistent scale across its series/lines.

I do often wonder why the other manufacturers can’t do the same.

Personally I don’t think you can go past K&C for consistency and depth of historical ranges, however that also depends on what you intend to collect. Many other manufacturers offer figures from different era’s too that you may prefer? Plus how you wish to display them will also have an impact?

As Jazz points out the scale debate has been around since this forum begun and no doubt will continue to the end of time.

From a diorama perspective, I prefer variation in figure size myself. If anything it’s vehicle scale differences that define what I collect, opposed to different scale figures.

To be honest I think we’re spoiled for choice. Variety for me is paramount, however I understand how consistency may be important for some. In that sense I think K&C will not disappoint and there are loads of second hand figures on the market to choose from as well.

Good Luck….
