If you're an expert in Military affairs, you're going to want more troops, tanks, jets and missiles for national security. Likewise, if you're an expert in pandemics, you're going to want more caution. The caution stems from the unknown about this virus. Once we learn how the virus acts, we can proceed with life. Did you ever hike a trail for the first time and find it difficult, but the second time you go, its a lot easier. The unknown is a huge psychological effect. Although the economy is suffering, the scientists can not make mistakes.
Regarding media. Yes, its biased. I agree, but we have more info presented to us than ever before. So we have to weigh everything. Don't stick to one train of thought. In the old days, the crazy person didn't have access to other crazies, so he would probably keep his crazy thoughts to himself. Now, the crazy person goes on the internet and says, "hey, there are other people like me, I guess I'll do something crazy."

That's crazy.

That is a brilliant statement my friend. There is one saying I use "***-holes are friends with other ***-holes" Fortunately, I live an *** hole free life right now.

Thank you kind sir for the well wishes on Daughter #2's graduation. Son#1 is graduating in August. He decided to graduate high school early and made this decision in the summer of his freshman year, where he went to summer school every summer to get ahead. He's not going to get a special present though because I swear he loses everything we get him. His i watch or whatever lasted 4 months after Christmas. Now it is MIA.

NY:

Brother...what an awesome award you received. That is not only admirable, but noble my friend. Volunteerism is a edict I demand from my children. They got it good and should never take it for granted and there is no "high" like the high of volunteering your time to make a difference. Thank you for that.

You look sexy, but it looks cold where you are at.

I hear ya...and yes the flu is devastating. But, we have so many preventatives in place now to combat it. I never remember getting a annual flu shot as a kid. Now, every year I get the shot at the VA. This one though (as Louis pointed out) has such a disparity of how it attacks its host. I can't imagine being on a ventilator and saying goodbye to my family before I am put into a induced coma on the hopes that I might not make it out. Yet, some people get a sneeze and thats it and some people who are world class athletes have a hard time learning how to walk again. Its just weird and further more scary.

Yes, I grew up on the old guard of anchors like Peter Jennings, Sam Donaldson the 60

Anyway, can't stand some of the anchors now on both sides and they disgust with me their pontification on politics. On the other hand, free press brought us Watergate and umpteen millions of stories that NEEDED to be told. But right now its just jaded and polarized.

Yes, I pray for them...think about them...wonder about them and know in my heart of hearts they will be the ones to sort this out. Not bullets and brawn, but brains.

Brazil just reported 20,000 cases in ONE DAY. Good lord and I saw a whole family turned away at HEB the other day. They did not have masks on and HEB refused to let them in. There were like 8 of them and I could tell they were from Mexico because I over heard them cursing to themselves about not being let in...in Spanish. I almost said something, but didn't need to because HEB was loud and clear. No mask, no food for you...no matter who or where your from.

Don't ask why-comply.

All,
They did not have masks on and HEB refused to let them in.

John,

HEB isn't doing that in Austin. Don't know why. For our other readers, HEB is the state's big grocery chain. Very much an institution in Texas. If you've go the money, they'll deliver your groceries. They also offer curb-side pickup. What they refuse to provide is "senior hours" to help protect old folks. I guess they figure that anyone who can't pony-up the bucks for concierge services doesn't deserve any better, very much of a "let them eat cake" sort of approach. Yes, I get mine delivered. And when I'm savoring my tenderloin, or whatever, it frequently occurs to me that I'm sitting in the dining room of the Titanic. The music is playing and everyone around me is fat and happy. But I know in my soul that there's gonna be hell to pay for all this, absolute hell for the very best and very worst among us.

Cheers John, I always enjoy your posts and it’s good to see this thread re-booted and members sharing their thoughts. It’s a bit of a mine field trying not to mention politics when it’s so intertwined with the topic, but understand why TF enforce the no politics rules.

Like many on here I’m scathing of main stream media’s coverage of the crisis and also very disappointed in the relentless censorship of anyone questioning the status quo and raising concerns about how the pandemic is being managed.
In particularly, highly experienced doctors and scientists speaking out and expressing their concerns are being quickly shut down and their podcasts and clips deleted at an alarming rate.

Moe,

Thats weird because when this all first went down and I lining up at HEB at 7 AM they let seniors in first. In fact, they had did it every time I went early in the morning. I guess things have changed. On a side note, when I went to HEB for some Mothers Day flowers I peeked in the toilet paper isle and it was full. Not like before where they put pallets of TP at the entrance due to the TP panic run. So, I guess maybe the panic subsided the senior rule. I thought it was awesome to have seniors go first (when the it the restrictions first came) so, again the "normalcy" of shopping has eliminated that. OR they are just Keeping Austin Weird. Who knows.

Mike,

My two labs ate a half of a Bundt Cake and a whole bag of tortilla chips the other day. The indoor invisible fence pods needed to be charged and these two would just keep inching and inching in the kitchen to see how far they could go before they get zapped. Smart ones I tell ya. We had to install the pods because Moosie (our female lab) figured out how to open he pantry door and get some chips and cookies while we were out. Her son, Beaux also figured out how to open the cabinet trash can for some left overs. We'd come home and you would have thought we were burglarized in the kitchen no less with wrappers and empty chip bags EVERYWHERE. When Moosie finally locked herself in the pantry and when we came home and couldn't find her that was the last straw. We looked and looked and I noticed the light was on in the pantry I opened it and there she was locked in the pantry with all the empty cookie trays, rice crispy treats and tortillas chips. She was sick for a day and a half and even though we didn't feed her that day she still lined up at the bowl AS IF it was time to eat. I feel you man.

Desert:

Yeah, everyone is an expert and quick to shut down the doctors. I don't get it. It gets so bad that they (the media) almost tries to vilify them and pose the conspiracy that they have a separate agenda. For the love of God shut up and listen to them.

You are allowed in your Vet Clinic? Not here! I call from the parking lot and they come get whichever pup is going in and then I sit there until the appointment is complete.

I've made several masks and bought a number as well. If a store dictates it (which most around here are, this is a Medical Community!), I wear one, keep spares in my car, etc. It is what it is. Still wish they'd get the testing ramped up! I would willingly donate my plasma for all the research they are doing here at Mayo, but they only want the known recoverees.

FYI - As long as you guys can agree to keep any politicking out of this, I have no issues with open, adult discussions. Just keep it clean fellas :salute::

Julie...I wish every business made it mandatory to wear PPE to enter...and that they wore it too to protect me...it would certainly cut down on infections...

Adult discussions?

Ok, I'll see myself to the door...………..:wink2:

What happened to the rib bone?

Details man, we need details.

The vet here, same as the scenario Julie laid out, you sit in the car, a vet tech comes out dressed like doctor Cyclops, full mask, gown, gloves, eye protection...……………….takes the pet, brings the pet back, they send you a bill in the mail.

We are mandated to wear masks everywhere in MA, I'm all for it.

The more that comes out about this virus, it's airborne, you get it from droplets from an infected person; sneezing, coughing, laughing, talking, droplets come out...……..so, put your mask on and stay the **** away from me, period, end of story.

George...

well...$431 later...{eek3}....

they showed me an x-ray of this 5" bone stuck in my dog's stomach...my dog only weighs 20.6 lbs...he's very small...they said it would take about a month to dissolve from his stomach acid...hopefully not blocking his intestines to pass his food...Boo is 14 years old...they recommended no surgery as he probably wouldn't survive it...he seems okay...eating good...having good bowel movements...active...just keeping an eye on him...

he usually takes the rib eye bone over to the corner of the room and strips the meat off it...when he tires of it...I pick it up and throw it away...he loves those bones...

I have let me chew on dozens of rib eye bones cause the bone is so darn big I never imagined his little *** could swallow one...it still doesn't seem believable to me...but I saw the x-ray...

it was an expensive rib eye...new rule...no more bones!

Wow, that's crazy that it will disolve eventually; better that than he tries to pass it.....................I have a feeling that would not turn out well for him.

Or you.

Gotta love pets, but man a trip to the vet is $$$$$$$$$, I looked into pet insurance, it's expensive and it seems like from what I've heard, a lot of things aren't covered, a waste really.

Good luck.................

I have heard the same thing on pet insurance...but if I ever get a new dog...I'm gonna research it real good...

truth is...his doctor visit are as much or more than mine...

so.......you love your pet and he's part of the family...what are you gonna do?

I have to drop off my dogs on Tuesday and I was informed of the same deal. Drop them off at door, My hound wont be happy but my German shep wont care. He'll go anywhere with anyone.
Mike,
I had a German shepherd 20 years ago, that ate half a slab of baby back ribs out of the sink once while they were waiting for a dry rub. Throw him in the car, run to vet, and you could see the 5 bones clearly in his stomach on the x-ray. He somehow ate them intact as a slab. I saved the x-ray it was so surreal. The Vet said he would pass them and he must have. It's shocking what they can eat and get away with.:smile2:

Mike,

I've got four right now, the oldest is an 8-year old female wooly Siberian Husky, the next oldest is a 5-year old Husky/Wolf mix, then the two youngest are a 3-year old Siberian Husky and a 3-year old Pomsky. Its hard to ever let them go, they are part of the family.

Louis...yea...they're easy to fall in love with...you want to give them a good life...you want to spoil them...you value their friendship and loyalty...pets can be expensive...I bet your food and vet bill is huge...

The dog was street dog for 2 + years when we adopted him. By far the most conniving dog I have ever seen. We had to install child proof locks on cabinet and drawers.
He would bite the pull nob and walk backwards to get in the drawer. Any folding door he would push against one side to open it. No joke, we tried 17 different garbage cans to try to find one he could not open. He would jump on the pedal and stick his nose in when it opened a little. Ended up having to keep a weight on it.:) You could not stop him, he somehow got a loaf of bread off of the top of the refrigerator on time. Bread was stored in the microwave till this dog passed cause everywhere else he would steal it.

AT one point he learned to go to the door and bark if we were eating, to get us up from the table so he could try to steal food. That worked once or twice till we figured it out.

My dogs do not eat people food, but this one you couldn't stop him. I used to have to keep a book on top of a drink if it was on a coffee table or end table, If not it would be gone in minute.
He learned to knock the book off eventually. Jerk.. the list of food he ate is unreal. LB of butter, whole bunch of bananas, a whole chocolate cake, a whole lasagna still hot in the corning ware dish. and on on.

God I miss that dog.
