Can anyone out there suggest a product that would best represent "hay" in a dio?

I have several model (54/60mm scale) wagons/carts that would look great with "hay' in them, however to date haven't found anything that looks the part.

Any idea's??

Appreciate any feedback.

Cheers Toddy

I have used some excellent hay from Woodland scenics which I was very pleased with. Also Try Hudson and Allen they do some great looking hay, also check buildarama and JG miniatures.

One method I have read is using the bristles from a broom, cut to the size you want and painted a golden yellow colour. This looks very realistic and not to expensive for a cheap broom and a pot of paint and could fill up the carts I bet from one broom head! :)

My farm model friends have also used real grass and chopped it up in a coffee grinder or blender.

Guys...

I use strong thin rope similar to what one uses on decking pull it apart and cut accordingly to size. Sometimes the colour means you do not have to paint but, then I dip the ends in superglue and, stick it in sand hey presto your hay has become wheat and looks very good as ground cover for the open plains of Russia in the summer.

Hope this helps

I am not suggesting that we all have something more pressing to do with our lives...but do you realize we have been discussing how to recreate tiny hay for 3 days?! Sad part is: I am here experimenting with grass clippings and a coffee grinder (sigh). lol :D

Craft stores like A.C. Moore and Michaels sell these little craft type brooms made from some kinda dried out grass that looks a lot more like hay then a regular broom would, the material is much finer and can be used for making hay, dried grass thatched roofs and other stuff also and its real cheap also! I paid 69cents per broom. You can just cut this stuff up real fine and its like a perfect match for scaled down hay. I even made a Hay stack from it also.

The roof on the building in the photo along with the hay on the hay bale and hay in the wagon were all made from this stuff.
Here are the photos.

I also did a How to thread on making grass clumps with this stuff.

G'day Tim, awesome pic's mate, thanks so much for posting them.:D Really like what you've done. You've given me some great ideas plus the hay looks fantastic.

Sadly our hobbie stores down here are very light on toy soldiers and accessories, which means must collectors here have to go off shore for even the basic's. In saying that it also leds to more creativity like what you've been doing.

Hope to post some pic's once I've made my own hay so to speak.

Cheers Toddy

$1.00 per "human scale" bushel...

or you can just drive over and take some out of my yard after it gets cut...

Very Nice:D.....really like the wagon/cart too, where did you get it?

In this case it's heavily glued and painted but loose it might work.
