Dambusters name change (1 Viewer)

The change to the dog's name was inevitable. Even back to the 1955 version the name was changed for the US release in case it caused offence. The name used for the Yank version was "Trigger".

Thankfully they didn't have to superimpose Roy Rogers into one of the pilot's seats.

It's one film not a tv series, the dogs name is such a small point it wouldn't bother me at all if it was changed. Maybe the producers don't like idea of using the word in what is predominately a White film. Also we all agree it's an objectionable word, just because some use it does not mean we all have to, Digger, Flopsy,Mopsy who cares, just show me flooding on the Ruhr.

Rob

Considering that not all Britons today are white, it might be bad to try to inspire non-white Britons by showing a white man call his dog by a name that meant "them". The movie should bring Britons TOGETHER over a notable part of their history. ...and yes I'd like to see cool CGI of the flooding of the Ruhr as well!

Perfect answer, that would be the best way.

Rob

I remember a WW II service comedy where whenever the cast used the F-word, a ship's whistle sounded.

Mel Gibson tried to dodge the anti-Semitic quote from the bible in The Passion of the Christ by just not showing the English subtitle when the casts says it.

Now Now...Roy was a patriot and a gentleman. The use of the word Nigger in the US at that time might have really caused gleeful laughing among the knuckle dragging set inappropriate to the tone of the film.

I am not one for political correctness but think it is better to change the name.

Many in the audience may not even know the story of the Dambusters and I would not want anyone coming out of the movie and the main point they talk about is the name of the dog. We want them coming out saying how much better the Aussie pilots were than the British {sm4}{sm4} (that joke is solely targetted at Rob ^&grin^&grin) or that the Brits were much better pilots than the Aussies (this joke is solely targetted at Howard ^&grin^&grin).

I am not familar with the situation at the time but the simple test is the Tuskagee airmen. If they were on the airfield in hearing distance would Gibson VC have shouted out the name of his dog and said "Come here N ?". I think not.

Just my thoughts.

Lets settle on the fact that Brit and Aussie pilots were better than the Germans-thats aimed at Goering!^&grin

Thing is we used to say and do a lot of things that we no longer do because we are more enlightened. We had a tv show here in the 70's that was about a white bigot living next door to a Black man, it was full of racsist jibes and 'jokes', I don't think there are many who think that would be funny now. In the fifties certain Bed and Breakfast establishments had ' No dogs, No Blacks' signs outside the door. Again we don't do that anymore either thank God.

We don't condemn the use of the word in the original film, the film was of its day and is a classic War film which I have in my dvd collection. But we've moved on and evolved from describing people in such a way, and the word is a relic of a bygone age, it belongs in the past.

Can't wait to see this film, with todays CGI the effects should be really good.

with the amount of real racism and hatred in the US and UK makes this a farce IMO.

The do-gooders, who feel the need to protect groups etc from alleged attacks have absolutely no idea the difference between calling someone a nigger in the street cause you hate black people and, someone calling their dog in WWII.

As for Gibson not calling his dog by its name if say, he was near the Tuskagee airmen is a strange comment considering he was not oppressing black americans by the name unlike what they faced from their own side.

All this concern generates fromwhite people and from what I have seen no problem from any ethnic minorities or groups that represent them from the news of this from last year. perhaps if some white people got a grip on how to react with ethnic minorities without always flapping that we may upset them it would be a more sensible and mature society over integration etc. Why not ask black people if Gibson calling his dog nigger in a film upsets, oppresses or insults them.

Rob...

Alf Garnet was hilarious and, I know a few black people who are in stiches when they see the programme even today I know I do.

My view is that if you were vocal with that opinion in some areas around where I am, we'd end up shovelling bits of you in to a bag. Nothing to do with pampering to the do gooders and self righteous.

Mitch, I was actually talking about Love thy Neighbour. Alf Garnett had some funny moments , but there are few classic 70's shows that stand up , Dads Army being a classic example of one that does, true character writing without the need for swearing or abuse.

We all have differing opinions on this but the one that matters I guess is Stephen Fry who is writing it and he said it was never going to feature so I guess it's a non story, but I thought it worth posting.

I don't see how?? would you care to elaborate I don't think I said anything there that would get me in trouble and, I have been in some pretty grotty areas in my time.

I am simply saying that we as white people practically over compensate in attempts to uphold the PC programme towards ethnic minorities women et al which, has lost all of its values it ever had.

white people in everyday life and organisations create difficulties when there really are none. I was at Hendon and you were not allowed to ask for black coffee and now you can't have blackboards insanity it oppresses nobody asking for a black coffee. How can you have a black police association but, not a white police association????

Its quite simple to differentiate between what is meant and what is not. I have a friend in Leicester who is asian whose name when said aloud sounds like Sooty and, its caused problems but, only from other white people when we shout his name or call him, Strange that!!
Mitch

Mitch,I don't think the truly absurd rule that you cannot ask for a black Coffee can IN ANY WAY be compared to the use of the N word which as been a term of abuse for generations, they are totally different things in my view. One is PC gone mad the other is society moving forward from decades of a race of people being ridiculed and mocked for the colour of their skin.

Rob

depends on your humour I like Chubby Brown and he is very racist and abusive as you say to everyone. but, I have seen him in Blackburn and half the audience was black or asian and they all loved it. If I remember love thy neighbour was there not what would be considered racist white comments honki etc?? As I say, its all about what the meaning is. We are at a point where there are so many ism's to protect everyone from black to irish and everything in between its madness. This is the third time this specific issue has been in the press and, it was on BBC and nobody from the black community in anything I have seen has been asked to comment upon the issue of gibsons dog. I wonder if there are any black forum members who would offer an opinion on whether this term in a historic setting is offensive to them now??

Anyway, after all of this I hope the bloody film is not pants!!!!lol

Yes, lets hope the flooding of the Ruhr is recreated in glorious CGI, the bombing of the Dams is not as inflamatory as the name of Gibsons Dog!. (unless you lived in the Ruhr at the time in which case I'm guessing it might be!)

Ha! I was talking to the clerk at The Hobby Bunker a couple hours ago about this subject and he told he knew about it because of these figures.

I suspect that there are more women collectors than collectors who are "people of color."
I'll ask my Welsh neighbor who's wife by slavery days standards, is a "Quadroon" what he thinks of this piece of his history.:wink2:

looking at the thread I thought maybe the name had been changed to darn busters,,or some earth shaking event had happened to move the 24 seven media coverage of the weener issue

Hahaha! Funny that his name just means someone from Vienna. Don't get me started on the "Boner."

I asked my Welsh neighbor about the movie issue. He knew about the 50s version and told me that he could watch and enjoy a new version even if the dog is renamed "Digger."
