Who prefers having the manufacturers decorate a figure's base with a particular terrain envisioned by the manufacturer or would you rather have a plain base with no decorative terrain that can be decorated to your own specifications by materials already available in the marketplace?

I prefer plain bases for gloss finishes, so they look like traditional toy soldiers, but I think that with a matte detailed finsh soldiers, the textured finishes off the figure

Now I know that some people like to group thier troops on terrain bases, so make interesting vignettes / dioramas and bases could detract, but maybe more still collectors show them off in cabinets, and so I'd expect the textured bases to be more popular for this sort of figure.

The best solution would be detachable bases, with pins or lugs, so you could mount them on thier own individual base, or on a larger terrain base.

Any thoughts on that??

The major drawback would be loosing the bases if you take them off :(

I prefer plain bases. If I want to place figures on terrain bases I still can cover a plain base. But a figure with a decorative base doesn't look so good when placed in a different scene IMO.

I would like small plain bases say similar to that found on the K&C LAH figures covering all releases across the board. I dislike the larger so called scenic bases and find they are a distraction from the figure and a pain when trying to dio the sets. I know there are products out to cover bases but, I don't wish to use them and have all the faff of having to pick them up.

I would definately like to see an end to them or, something along the lines of Obee's suggestion of removable bases

As I prefer to make my own anyway, I always prefer a plain base supplied with the figure. Indeed, quite a few suppliers of castings give a choice of base - or will even supply you with an alternative - if you ask. Its no big deal either way - as I often make up my own plain bases - if I don't like the one supplied.

But - as you asked - plain for me every time. Having said that - I have recently started using small "rocks" , made from lentils, as decoration on some bases where I want to depict stony ground - but at least with a plain base to start with - I have a choice. You can always add to - but is more difficult (though not impossible) to take away. johnnybach

I prefer plain for glossies and terrain for matte. I don't care for excessively large bases or elevated bases beyond what is necessary for stability. -- Al

Pins or lugs are a great idea! Helps with placing figures in larger dioramas to give it that museum look. I think bases should be detachable.

I remember asking this question on some thread or some place a looooong time ago. I would love to see detachable bases or maybe even a clear base or even a modifiable base, if possible. I have 1000 K&C AWI figures and most their bases fit reasonably well in a wooded terrain or a field setting but you have to work at it a bit with JG filler (for example) or other natural debris from the back yard.

Having the soldiers marching down a dirt road is not to much to fix, but a cobble stone road or a wooden floor or deck is more awkard. What do you do there? ^&confuse

First Legion has incredible figures but their huge (a somewhat elaborately) decorated bases are (minor) issue for me.
What would happen to the price of a K&C figure if I painted the base .... I wonder.

I wish they were...they would be so much more versatile with pegs in the soles of their feet and optional bases...

Prefer terrain bases. The newer pieces have much more realistic bases. Would like to have figs without bases at all for wounded/dead figs and prone posses. Don't need bases for those. Chris
