Durbar Collection (1 Viewer)

It certainly is a great display. Over the years I have seen many depictions of the Durbar and all of them have shown a mixture of the two parades. On the first day there was the military parade with massed bands of both cavalry and infantry, full complements of the army in India, both native and European, and artillery, horse, elephants and bullocks. The second day was the parade of the Princes with the stilt walkers, elephants, camels, personal bodyguards and household troops. I have a listing of the troops taking part in the military parade which I will happily copy and pass on to anyone interested.

Hi John,

The moving color pictures to which you have linked are most exciting! However, I want to point out for the members who are not so familiar with the Durbars that these pictures were taken at the 1911 Delhi Durbar. The Durbar figures/sets most manufacturers (Beau Geste, Marlborough, W. Britains, etc.) produce illustrate the events of the 1903 Delhi Durbar. The one exception of which I am familiar are the Durbar figures produced by William Hocker. Mr. Hocker's series illustrates the 1877 Durbar.

I would really love to see a manufacturer produce figures illustrating the events of the 1911 Durbar. While grandeur of the 1911 Durbar paled in comparison to the 1903 Durbar, it is still a very interesting subject.

Thanks again for posting such an interesting link!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Thanks John for the links,

I had seen the 2nd but not the 1st. Very helpful when pulling together a Durbar display.

Cheers

Gentle Friends,

It has been several months since I posted any of my Delhi Durbar figures on this thread. I hate to see this thread sit dormant too long, so I thought you might like to see one of my lastest acquisitions. Attached are photos of my Marlborough Delhi Durbar Set #D72, Shan Prince on State Elephant. I am exceedingly fortunate to have been able to add this set to my collection as it is most difficult to find. A collector friend of mine alerted me to its availability and, much to my pleasure, I was able to obtain it.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Gentle Friends,

It is most interesting to note that the elephants from the Shan States departed from Burma in October in order to arrive in Delhi by the first of January in time for the appropriate parades. To accomplish this feat, the elephants had to walk thousands of miles to Delhi.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Gentle Friends,

You might especially notice the conical headgear worn by the Prince. Most of the Shan Chieftains wore such headgear.

Another item of special interest is the elephant's faceplate. It is huge and heavy and it covers the elephant's eyes so he can only see down, not straight ahead.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Gentle Friends,

And, finally, the set includes two walking escort figures. You may view these figures below.

Thank you for viewing my newest Durbar elephant. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Beautiful Pat, many thanks for sharing your new treasure with us. I hear that we are in for some new matte Durbar from Britains shortly. Can't wait to see them.

Regards

Scott

Thanks Pat. It's wonderful seeing the photos, and you are right about keeping this thread alive.

Do you think you'll be collecting the matte figures Pat, or do you like them only in gloss colours?

All the best, Russell

Beautiful set Pat, well done on finding it

Cheers

Hi Dave,

:D:D:D Somehow, I just knew posting these photos would grab your attention. I have no doubt you will be greatly pleased and proud when you add this set to your Marlborough collection. I think it is one of the best Durbar Elephants Marlborough has produced.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat ;)

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your kind comments. Interestingly enough, I consider my Durbar collection as a treasure. I am only too happy to share it with interested collectors.

I noticed the Britains Summer Suppliment has been posted on the forum today. If you have not yet viewed the soon to be released matte Durbar figures, you have a treat awaiting you. Let me know what you think of these new sets.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Pat,

I have indeed seen the supplement and viewed it about 50 times already LOL I am looking forward to the new releases and have been deciding how many of the street liners I will need  I am most inmpressed by the buildings, I think these will be a hit with both the matte and the glossy collectors. Hopefully there will be some samples ready in time for Chicago.

Hi Russell,

I have a distinct preference for glossy Durbar figures. However, I have been collecting the Britains matte Durbar range and I intend to continue doing so. While the glossy Durbar figures appeal to me much more, the temptation is too great to collect the entire Britains matte series from the very beginning of the range. I do not display the matte figures with the glossy ones. Having separate displays allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds.

By the way, will you be attending the Chicago show this year? I warmly remember our conversation at the Treefrog Dinner last year and I will be looking forward to seeing you again.

Thanks for your interest in my elephant. I hope you have enjoyed viewing it.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Great acquisition, Pat. Congratulations.

I appreciate that with the approach of a purist I have so far been successful in limiting my Delhi Durbar collection to Beau Geste. Having-said that your acquisitions certainly tempting for any DD collector.

Got my order in within for the new elephant guard set (Alwar), wondering whether she will (again) have new sculpts available in Chicago.

Hi Pat,
You wrote,

Unfortunately I won't. I really enjoyed meeting you, Konrad, John (Leadmen) and others. I will be attending a wedding in France. I know, I know, life is rough. I hope the wine will be good though.
I keep looking at my collection and realize that there is no getting around it. I really like the traditional glossy toy soldier. I enjoyed Leadmen's thread on his WWI glossy collection.
I also remember being tempted by one of Britain's Durbar elephants. The shaded platform above the elephant and the large blanket were a kind of mustard yellow. Do you have that piece?

Hi Scott,

If you are getting a lot of the route liners they had set amounts of space between them depending on the area and crowds. The average space between was about 6 feet and in areas of higher congestion they were as close as 2-3 feet apart. The wheeler book has details on this so you can get the right number of troops.
