Encouraging New Blood into the Hobbie. (4 Viewers)

Yes if you aren't a fussy bugger I like myself the cheaper options are OK, but I got beaten by the 'bug' of top of the line miniatures and nothing else will do. In just approx 18 months of finding these addictive bloody things I estimate I've spent $15,000 which is a lot of lolly! But I had given away the fags, the grog and some other nasty habits that would have cost me a lot, lot more and at least what I now have will get me back what I paid if I ever sell. Being single also helps...:wink2:
Wayne.

Wayne, I have to confess I'm a member of the 'fussy-bugga' club myself so you're not alone......regardless of what ya spend mate, the main thing is you're enjoying yourself and having a ball doing it. Your posts certainly reflect this and you're a true asset to the forum.{sm4}

My first knee jerk reaction would be to steer people away from this hobby. The prices are just outta wack for metal figures. Plastics would be a good option. If people are interested in history Id tell them to spend their money on books. For some folks who like out of the way historical eras like egypt, samurais,modern etc I think you can still enjoy it to some degree but people who are into naps, ww2, forget about it. If I really wanted to encourage them into the hobby it would be to take small bites.

But yeah, cant say Im out there tootin the horn trying to muster new collectors into this hobby.

Good quality plastics, especially the painted variety, might be a good point of entry for younger collectors (when I say younger I don't just mean age but also/or starting collectors).From there people can upgrade (or not) if they want and can. That's the way it happened with me and I am still so fond of those Britains Deetail plastics...

I've only been collecting for six months now and what really helped me take the first step was realising that it is possible to buy one figure at the time rather than sets. My budget is very tight (and so is space), but in a way it helps me find more creative solutions.

I'm with you mate, being able to buy single figures has kept me in the hobbie really. I've had times when the dollars were very tight and purchasing sets or vehicles just wasn't an option. I think K&C for example are good at catering for this line of collecting as I'm sure there are other companies that do this too.

As Paulo says, starting out with plastic's is also a great way to get into the hobbie, heck it's how I got into it, back in the 90's, by reliving my childhood and collecting Britains deetail etc.

Back then there was no way I could afford metal figures gloss or matt, but little by little I caught the bug and started to pick up cheap metal figures on the net. My first metal figures were mainly gloss WBritains, which I still have, but then I purchased some of the matt WBritains Napoleonic figures from the Northgate Wall set (never did get the wall/gate) and I was hooked into matt.......I ended up coverting most of my plastic's collection into metal and it's been that way ever since.

Don't get me wrong I still love plastic's, but I'm a 'metal' man now. ^&grin:wink2:

I started out when I was young with Britain’s Deetail figures. Plastics are a great way to get the younger generation involved.

Jason ,

Yes , Marx playset's & Britain's Deetail lead me into modeling & then serious TS collecting...Plastic's are a great starting point , also to learn some painting skills...

Why encouranging new people to join this hobby? Well, I guess only people involved in the business and toysoldiers selling can think of this...Personally, i don' t see any interest in convincing others to do this, and sometimes I wonder why I got myself convinced to do this!( But i m out now). I would be interested to convince some people to vote for an italian new movement which can change the country, but to make new toysoldiers collectors....!!! And for those who want , with a simple soldier at 40 euros or more and mounted at more than 100 euros...Good luck!!!! {sm4}

Little bit of a shame you feel there's no point in encouraging others into the hobbie Poppo? Not sure if you've read the whole thread, but you might find that many collectors started off with collecting plastic's or other cheaper TS figures, well before they progressed to the more expensive glossy's or matt ranges that we have available today.

I'd agree that trying to get into the hobbie by trying to dive into the top end of the market could be off putting for some, however there are other options for budding collectors that should be explored and encouraged. However if that's not your thing, no probs.

Personally speaking I get a real kick out of helping others into the hobbie both young and old, plus I find you often make friends on the way.....it's great fun{sm4}

Cheers!

Totally agree Toddy, I get a buzz out of showing people my collection and I also get a buzz out of seeing other people's collections. I like to encourage people to get into the hobby as it's a great hobby to get into (making friends, meeting people, leaving a legacy for your child/children) and it would be awesome to have people close to where I live that shares the same interest. At the end of the day though you cannot convince someone to get into the hobby but as you say, many people used to collect plastic figures or used to make models as a kid, so to see painted metal toy soldiers and vehicles in all their glory might convince someone to start collecting again. I know it convinced me!

Cheers Tom....... yeah TS collectors are fairly thin on the ground here too mate, thats one of the reasons why I enjoy the forum so much. As a result I've pointed a few interested parties towards the forum and have always received great feedback for doing so. Like you say it's a great hobbie for young and old and as I've found since joining the forum, full of colourful characters:tongue: and really cool blokes^&grin
