Facade vs full dimemsion???? (1 Viewer)

Those buildings look good. These are great ideas that I had never considered. Gonna have to try these out. -- Al

That was a cheap and cheerful option Al, used 4 sheets of photo paper and a piece of foamcore from the dollar store plus my ink and a little white glue.

MacGuyver would be proud!! :D:D

Great job bud!! After I read your post, it reminded me that there are wargaming companies out there that make reinforced cardboard buildings. Really great idea

Excellent idea, very innovative

PJ brings up an interesting fact regarding backdrop pieces from Elastolin, and it applies to many of the German makers of fully-round figures. They offered flat backdrop pieces for their fully-round figures. It made perfect sense, since their industry originated in the manufacture of flats. I've seen flat backdrop pieces, like buildings, and half-round pieces, like the Schneider evergreens, that were and still are used as backdrops for traditional toy soldiers.

Prost!

I have seen many Model RR backgrounds where they had photos or printed matter of buildings glued on the foam board..........HOWEVER, what made these really pop was when they actaully pasted one in front of another (IE a portion of the rear one was not entriely blocked by the one in the front, so you still could see the rear one) , but then the edges of the foam board were painted black and this really gave it an amazing depth. I really think these building "profiles" on foam board are a great idea........(and for vehicles as well as aircraft) if you are adding some perspective to your showcase shelf displays.

I like that idea Walt, may have to try that with my Durbar buildings.

@ thebritfarmer. That's EXACTLY what I was talking about! VERY well done. I have the Durbar also, and am inspired to create some new scenes!!

@ Walt - don't you have some pictures of the "picture in front of picture" idea? It's hard to understand in the abstract. And, yes, what a bit of scenery this idea would make! I think this is the technique used in documentaries where you see what looks like 3-D picutes of historic scenes or 3D old photos.

@ Brad - one of those Elastolin flats is pictured below. I love these pieces, and still buy them when I can find them.
Here's another one of my favorites - an Indian Village double Tee Pee. Elastolin also did very elaborate dioramas like the Noa's Arc scene and the Arctic scene that were WAY ahead of their time.

Those teepees are cool, and add to the theme without taking up too much space and IMO that is all that is needed.

Just thought I'd add that it's great to see so many K&C three dimensional diorama pieces coming out. I have a few of the original Normandy village pieces which were great, although crudely painted in black with some weathering. Then, when the Berlin Reich Chancellery came out that was added (excellent piece at what was a great price). The french farmyard and walls came next and they really are outstanding pieces. So much character and vivid but realistic painting.

I think there's a place for both - I have the facade pieces in cabinets where space is a premium and they just add a 'backdrop' whereas the Normandy pieces form a diorama.

The trouble now is I really want to get the latest Normandy church facade, the Boulangerie and I still have the RAF Nissen hut on my wish list! Not to mention some middle east pieces for my AK sets.....

Right you are!...and I also have some full-round tee pees that I will use at our next Museum display (hopefully!). These will be then be used as "background" near the edge someplace - to suggest a larger village. So both can work well with each other.

As has been said here before, it's like designing a stage set for a play..

PJ,

Ray;)
