First K&C set owned & did/would you part w/ it (1 Viewer)

It was my second trip to OTSN, September of 1998 and I had just seen Saving Private Ryan for about the 50th time on pay per view at the hotel and decided to buy DD 01 and 02 from Andy, who was set up across the hall from me at the show. These were my first two and to this day the only K & C items in my collection, which as most of you know consists of thousands of painted 20mm figures.

Sorry Ron, they are not for sale....................

G'Day All,

Just joined your forum so I'm trying out this 'thread' thingy - not sure if this one will work or if I am just typing away for 'nout?

Anyway I cottoned on to this forum the other day and thought you guys are very funny!! Hence my joining. Also I have been collecting K&C Napoleonics for 2 years now and I am interested to see who else is out there and that there are some more Napoleonics fans out there (Hello Capitolron).

I'm a Kiwi living in the large sunburnt land next door to New Zealand they call Australia but we New Zealanders call 'West Island' or 'The Outpost'. Feels like it when you are trying to collect K&Cs all the way down here..

I first became hooked on K&C (or any of this hobby really) 2 years ago when I saw 2 mounted Napoleonic French Chasseurs on display in Harrods Toy Store in London. And so my first K&Cs were some French Voltigeur Napoleonics purchased from the Nevilles at K&C UK (still have them). I've tried to look back but alas...

Would be great to hear from anyone, or am I the only silly sod up at this time of the night....

Cheers

Welcome aboard Kiwi!

There are some other Kiwis like Vandilay, and also some aussie's like Ozdigger, so you are not alone in your outpost down under. There are many K&C dealers in Australia, just check the K&C website. I personally have had pleasant dealings with Peter Nathan. You should have no problem adding to your collection.

Regards,

Louis

Thanks for the reply Louis,

You seem to have been around a while and I saw some photos of your collection in the Tree Frog site - very impressive! Have you collected many of the K&C Napoleonics?

Cheers

Karl

welcome aboard ,I only have a few naps but as you have probably seen
their are plenty of die hard Napoleonic collectors here.
Where abouts in NZ do you originaly hail from ?.
cheers Rob

Karl,

Matt Napoelonics aren't really my bag. I have most of the 1994-1995 issue glossy K&C Napoleonics, and a few of the limited edition matt ones, but I wouldn't consider my Napoleonic collection big. The man to speak to about Napoleonics is Hans Hedrich. He has enough to build a real British Square and properly attack it.

Louis

In 2003, I ordered some individual Afrika Korps and British 8th Army from Marjorie's Treasures to evaluate the quality of the figures for a chess set I wanted to put together. If it wasn't for her selling the individual figures, I would never have paid $85 for a box of what I thought to be "toy soldiers."

I was so impressed that I bought all the complete AK/EA sets from her and the host of this forum, except for the vehicles which I had no interest in.

In 2005 I read a thread on this forum that the already retired Matilda was getting hard to find so I contacted several K&C dealers and found one who only had one in stock. Of course when I got it I had to have the Panzer III to balance the collection. The rest is history as I must have set a record acquiring every vehicle and gun I could order or find on EBay exceeding 60 pieces of K&C rolling stock within a year, not to mention countless boxes of figures.

Ironically as a Marine, I never collected any of the Iwo Jima sets until I visited the Island of Iwo Jima in January of this year as part of a battle study. The experience of walking the battlefield (the entire Island was a battle field) and taking the trek up Mount Siribachi was awe inspiring! The day after I got back I ordered all the Iwo sets and have since converted some other sets to fit the Iwo Jima sets.

Most of the pieces I bought are still in the box but I do have several displayed. I don't intend to sell my sets unless I wake up one day and realize that all this was just a passing fad in my life.

Great story, I’ve always admired the USMC in which my father served. I wish more collectors were interested in the WWII Pacific but at I guess they aren't.

I too have had other sets converted to USMC figures and it's been great here are just a few of my pictures but I'm more interested in your conversions. The difference between you and me though is that you’re serving in the Marines and are a true artist. Can you share them with the rest of us your USMC conversions?

Carlos

Basically, these pictures have been posted before and if you see a Figarti or KC figure it wasn't converted the rest of them are converted ONWTC, Britians (old and new) and FOV Sherman’s and M16 Halftrack

Terrific Dios! I recognize some of the K&C pieces. Are the others conversions?

I will post some pics of some conversions later.

I also wish that more people would collect the Pacific sets as the relly are well done and I would definately buy anything K&C put out in this theme.

I ask this out of ignorance. Please explain if my understnading is correct. The USMC is a separate wing of the US armed forces. It is not Navy and not Army. It has its own armour and its own airforce. In what other ways is it different from the rest of the armed services. Is this a question of tradition or is there a real functional difference. I think the Royal Marines are part of the Royal Navy so obvioulsy this is different from the USMC.
I would appreciate a history lesson of sorts

Damian.

That's a very good question. The USMC is a separate service of the US Armed forces with very close ties to the Navy. At 180,000, we are the smallest of the services. We like the US Navy fall under the Department of the Navy. All our Doctors, medical Corpsmen, and Chaplains are from the US Navy but most wear the Marine uniform when serving with Marine units. Currently the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is a US Marine.

The Marines are the USA's 911 force as we are self contained. We train and fight as a Marine Air Ground Task Force and can be tailored to fit any fight. In addition, we have Marine Air Ground task force (Marine Expeditionary Units) at sea aboard Navy Amphib ships that can strike anywhere on the globe in a matter of hours.

Hope I'm not sounding too much like a commercial.

Thanks for asking.

I spent a great deal of time when I was Senior Policy Advisor to Chairman Duncan Hunter on the House Armed Services Committee trying to change the name of the Secretary of the Navy to the Sec. of the Navy and MARINE CORPS. We always lost the battle in the US Senate - Sen. John Warner (former Sec of Navy under Nixon) would kill the proposal.

I do know Gen Peter Pace - outstanding man - have a great number of friends who are Marines. You guys are the best. I actually live four blocks from the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill.

Great work on that truck.

All the best,

Ron

Thanks Carlos! Thanks Ron!

Ron,
Only four blocks from 8th and I! Did you ever have a chance to watch one of the sunset parades the Marines put on there?

Does the USMC have its own special forces as such. I have heard about the Recon commandos. Are these a separate unit in the corps?

Damian,

We have Marine Force Recon units as part of each of our three active Divisions. We also have MARSOC (Marine Forces Special Operations Command).

Keep in mind that the Marines in general have the ability to do anything the Army Rangers, Army Special Forces, and Navy SEALs do. During Desert Shield, my Marine Detachment conducted identical missions to what the Navy Seals were doing.
