Food Particular to your Area (1 Viewer)

I swear...I could eat a bark mulch chip out of my garden if I could dip it in Pappasito's whipped garlic butter...

I live in central Illinois, the hamburger horseshoe sandwich is the number one food item known to this area!!😀

Mike that butter sauce/dip is heavenly. If you really want to go "FAT KID" dip a Pappasitos Flour tortilla in it and go to town.

John your neighbor.

you So. NJ/Philly boys get Scrapple too! Mmmmmmmm

We do, but forget anything made in Philly. You have to come up here and get scrapple from gen-yoo-wine PA Dutchmen. Leidy's is good.

Prost!

Let's see. Here in the Lehigh Valley, we have:

A-Treat soda
Chili dogs in a style I have seen nowhere else except Scranton, and Norristown. The chili is not thick glop spooned onto the hot dog, but a sauce that's spooned over it, once the bun has been spread with mustard and chopped onions. Yocco's is the biggest vendor, founded by Lee Iaccoca's uncle (the Iaccocas are from Allentown), with 6 locations, followed by Pott's and Willie Joe's (which was founded by cousins of mine, back in the day), Traub's in Emmaus, and numerous other single lunch counters and hot dog stands that sell the same kind of chili dog
Marshmallow Peeps, which I can't stand, but people seem to like 'em
Kiffels, cups ("tossies", a corruption of Tassen) and Slovak rolls, Kolach
We also have our own style of cheesesteak, different from the Philly variety. We don't use Steak-ums. It's chipped steak, with a red sauce; no Cheez Whiz (fegh!) but real sliced American cheese; pickles and hot peppers. The best example is Vince's, but Zandy's is also good.

Prost!

You like that? "Rats and ****rats Wine". My brother Grognard has to be a wine connoisseur...they are very particular about wine etiquette. I once got called out for calling Muscat just that MUS-CAT. Instead of the French pronounciation of "Muhscahht de lunel" {sic} with the French accent and all. It was a guy from New Jersey who was going all east coast sophistication on me and I uh...y'know...being from Texas and all...was like alright let me try that...hmmmm....MUSCAT.

John from Texas

PS: No bust on you Grognard, be proud of your wine prowess brother. I don't drink the stuff cause I'm a vegan and all.

Yeah, we say, "shi-rahz" around here. I figure the Ozzies say, "shi-raz", rhymes with "as".

Seriously, I like the earthiness, herbiness of its flavors. It's like the stout of wines.

Prost!

Actually in France, Shiraz is called Syrah. Syrah pronunciation in French is literally See and rat (like in ratatouille and you don't pronounce the t in rat) :wink2::wink2:

John of Texas must be sending out Mexican mind waves !

Was driving home with the better half when suddenly felt the need for Mexican food. It does not happen often but there is much to blame this forum for {sm4}. So divert the car to Pepe's which we have driven past for 11 years but never visited.

Had the beef fajitas with all the side stuff and nachos with chilli con carne. We were lucky we picked the small nachos as even the medium would have been too much with the fajitas.

Now the challenge is going to be to find a Belgian place as I love fricadeles and croquettes.{sm2}

My most memorable meal goes back to Limasol Cyprus when I was about 12. Place was called Niazis (not to be mistaken with the nasty people). They did BBQ but my favourite was the Cypriot sausages, with coleslaw, yoghurt and pita bread. Only place I have found the sausages since is at an annual Greek festival. Have had plenty of great buffets etc but that restaurant and it's food always been a good memory. Perhaps it was the start of actually being taken to a decent place !

So how was Pepe's? I tell you what. I will just put it out there...if and when I visit Australia I will cook for all of y'all. Since I can't send mesquite wood to Australia...I send the seasonings. But don't we have the issue of Avocados there? As in you guys don't have them or something? I'll bring those too. I'll smuggle some fresh Jalapeños in and if I go to jail for breaking the biodiversity laws...come bail me out.

YES the greek food. I love it.
