football season is here!!!!!!!!!! (1 Viewer)

... Mangini should definitely be fired. He has been unable to get one of the most talented teams on paper in the league to be able to play anywhere near their potential, or with any consistency. Every time the guy speaks in public, I cringe. He is such a putz.

Please don't compare Mangini to a putz. You're insulting putzes by doing that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the Redskins win next week, they finish 10-6, but miss the playoffs in Zorn's first season as headcoach . . . considering the level of competition in the NFC East, and the fact that Clinton Portis has been banged up most of the year, I hardly think they should consider firing him. The only real beef I would have with Zorn is his hanging Clinton Portis out to dry in the media a couple of weeks ago. A coach just shouldn't shoot off his mouth like that about a guy who plays as hard as Portis does.
....
Louis, I agree with you but sadly you overstated the Redskins record for this year.;):D They are now 8-7 and hopefully will finish 9-7, which as you said is not so bad in this conference, especially for a new headcoach with a new system and a banged up Portis and line for a team that lives so much by the run. 10-6 (which we could have had by simply beating the Bengals) would have left them in the PO hunt.

"Same old Jets. Morons:mad:"

And therein lies the beauty of living in the New York/New Jersey area; you can now "switch over" and suddenly become a bandwagon Giants fan.

Funny all of this talk about firing head coaches; Magini in his first year came up here in November and knocked off the Patriots and finished the season 10-6 and was the toast of New York. Remember his cameo on "The Sopranos"? Even Tony was star struck at the sight of the great "Mangini";That was until the Jets got demolished by the Patriots that year in the playoffs.

Now they want to run the guy out of town on a rail; granted he made some boneheaded decisions yesterday, but he's not the guy who brought a washed up over the hill QB in to save the franchise. You live by the Favre, you die by the Favre.

Regarding Coughlin; last year, the Giants started out 0-2 and were a goal line stand vs Washington in game 3 from firing Coughlin, he of the ex Marine short haircuts, jacket and tie on the plane type that most if not all pro players cannot stomach. That BS works in college, where he was a success (Boston College).

The Giants make the playoffs and play all loosey goosey and go on their roll last year, win the Super Bowl, are the #1 seed this year and he's a God in New York now.

Sorry, he didn't become a super genius coach overnight, he got lucky, just like Magini didn't become a moron overnight, he ran out of luck; Coles makes that catch on fourth down and perhaps the Jets are still tied for first this morning, such is life in the NFL................

Sorry Brad, my yiddish is limited . . . what's lower than a putz? I'll gladly refer to Mangini by that term instead . . .:p

How 'bout a yutz? Or a shlemazel? He's lower than a shlemihl, which might rank him below putz.

BTW, down here in PA, Putz is also the scene you set up around your Christmas tree. But the double entendre is always amusing. I get a laugh when I see Edgeboro Moravian Church's sign at this time of year, advertising their Christmas display: "Come see the Moravian Putz!"

Prost!
Brad

The Bears beat the hated Packers in OT. The Bears still have a chance to make the playoffs.

I am not sure why you say not much longer Ron? I think Zorn has shown excellent potential as a head coach. I think he could make a great coach for the long term and if the Skins are ever to again have consistent success, they need to have a consistent coaching staff. How many head coaches have we had in the last 15 years? Please don't tell me you want to bring back Marty.;):D

Hey - I have no problem with Coach Zorn at all !

Reading the Washington Post - you would think that Synder was dropping off moving boxes on his front door.

I think the guy is doing a good job - hope he can last with our Redskin Owner

The Bears didn't win...the Packer's lost that game! For once Vikings fans were rooting FOR the cheeseheads, and couldn't get a break.

Now we have to beat the G-men on Sunday. Louis, any intel about how long your starters are playing? They'd be crazy to play the whole game. Might give the poor Vikes a chance (if we can hold on to the football this week).

According to local talk radio, the guys with healing injuries (particularly RB Brandon Jacobs [knee] and DT Fred Robbins [shoulder]) probably will not play to avoid aggravating said injuries. All the other starters are expected to play the whole game. With Ward needing 52 yards to make the Giants only the 4th team in NFL history with two 1,000 yard rushers, I expect him to play at least as long as it takes to get the necessary yardage. Coughlin played all his starters last year in the week 17 game against the Patriots, a game without playoff implications for the Giants, because he believes both in the integrity of the game for the fans, and that momentum is important approaching the playoffs.

Peter, this is a quote from an article on the Giant's official website:

"Specifically, how long will Coughlin play his starters, including Eli Manning, in a game that has no bearing on the Giants’ standing or postseason position? But with a bye looming on the first postseason weekend, those players who don’t suit up or play sparingly could lose their sharpness before the team’s divisional round game on Jan. 10 or 11.

In addition, if Chicago wins its Monday night game against Green Bay, the Vikings would have to defeat the Giants to clinch the NFC North title. Does Coughlin expose players who have been nursing injuries – such as Brandon Jacobs and Fred Robbins – to a Minnesota team that might be fighting for its playoff life?

One thing is certain – Coughlin vehemently disputes the notion that the game is meaningless to the Giants.

“I disagree with the idea that you have nothing to gain,” said Coughlin, whose team wrapped up the top seed with last night’s thrilling 34-28 overtime victory over the Carolina Panthers. “There is a lot to be gained. If you believe, as we do, that you have to be playing your best football at this time of the year, you certainly do have some things to build on, and particularly when you are not going to play for a couple of weeks."

I also think history sometimes show that if you take a lackadaisical approach or just take the week off, you lose the edge and make a hasty exit in the playoffs. Players that are hurt won't play but other than that...

Now, if you want to assure that the Vikes make the playoffs, have Mangini coach the Giants this week and have Coughlin coach the Jets :D

I have a better idea - we'll give you Brad Childress for your waterboy and some stick-up for Adrian Peterson's hands!

I think he is too. Good old Dan, not the most patient of owners.
Let's see 6 head coaches since he took over in 97, I certainly hope he gives Jim another year or two.

As a Giants fan, I couldn't be happier with my team. I had no expectations last year, and they won the Superbowl in one of the most unexpected and exciting runs I have ever seen in any sport, particularly with regard to their road winning streak. Then, this year, as the defending champions, I had very limited expectations, hoping that they would play well enough to make the playoffs as a wildcard and win 1 playoff game in defense of their title, to build for another run next year. Instead they over come the traditional championship hangover as well as the loss of Strahan (retirement), Osi Umenuira (pre-season year ending knee injury), Burress (stupidity and self-destructive tendencies costing suspensions/being placed on non-football injury list for remainder of year), as well as significant limitations to the playing time of Brandon Jacobs (knee injury costing several games) and Fred Robbins (shoulder injury costing several games) to win the division, clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and have a legitimate shot of at least making the NFC Championship and possibly the Superbowl. The only wishes I have for the offseason are (1) sign or draft a tall, top notch wide receiver who is a solid citizen and (2) sign the free agent shut down corner whose name I can't spell or pronounce from the Raiders.

As to the other New York team, if the Jets have half a brain, they can Mangini and bring in Bill Cowher. They also need to get themselves a franchise quarterback in the next year or two, as even if Farve has anything left in the tank, he won't be around more than one more season. Bringing in Cowher will help them improve their talent quickly as well, as many free agents will be happier to play for a proven winner like Cowher with 2 AFC Championships and a Superbowl title then Mangini, a guy who has been a bust as a head coach, without a single playoff victory.

I have more bad news for you Peter - according to an article on NFL.com, Coughlin says if the doctors clear Brandon Jacobs to play, he will play as well. Coughlin announced he intends to play all his starters all game and play to win.

Plaoyoffs are here!!!!! almost, I prey that Buffalo knocks off the patriots this weekend so if the Ravens wanted to rest some of the banged up players they could, I really want the Ravens to beat the Jags but I would rather see the Pats lose early then we don't have to worry about the out come against the Jags....Sammy

Sammy,

I am not big on predictions, but you can take this one to the bank. The Ravens are going to beat the Jaguars and make the playoffs. As far as the Bills beating the Patriots, I just don't see that happening. The Patriots have beated the Bills about 10 times in a row, and no Bill Bellichek led team is losing a crucial regular season elimination game. Miami is also going to pound the Jets.

To me, the most interesting game this weekend is the Cowboys at the Eagles, an elimination game for both teams. Will Romo turn the ball over and lose yet another key December game? Will the great McNabb from the second Giants game 3 weeks ago or the lousy McNabb from the Redskins game last week show up? Does Barber's toe keep him from being effective again? Does the Cowboy's rookie runningback Choice step up again? Or is this Brian Westbrook's week? Which defense gets turnovers? Which defense can stuff the run? This game is going to be a real pressure cooker. God I love the NFC East in December!!!:cool:

Before I go off on my rant, I want it noted that I am a Giants fan, and my team won its division, and has home field throughout the playoffs, so none of what I am about to say is sour grapes concerning my own team.

The Chargers just blew out the pathetic Broncos, and won the AFC West with an 8-8 record, while the Patriots will sit home at 11-5. I am sorry, but this is just wrong. Why do teams who play half their games against a ridiculously weak division, and still only muster an 8-8 record get rewarded with a playoff spot, while a team that overcomes adversity in a tough division to generate a better record sits home? Both football (Chargers, Cardinals) and baseball (Dodgers) have had this ridiculous outcome this year.

Unbalanced schedules favor the weak divisions over the strong. Why do the Giants have to play 10 straight winning teams (11 of 16 of their games were aainst teams who finished with winning records), while the Cardinals play only 5 winning teams all season (and lose to 3 of them)? Look at Denver. With the exception of the Jets (who finished 9-7) did they beat another team who finished with a winning record all season?

Is it me, or do we need to get rid of divisional play, have everybody play everybody else in their conference once, with just one or two non-conference games, and then have the top six teams in each conference make the playoffs? At the very least there has to be a rule that if no team in a division has a winning record, that division is not represented in the playoffs, and another wildcard team will go in its place. And finally, screw giving division winners with a poorer record home filed advantage against a wildcard team with a better record. The 8-8 Chargers will be hosting the 12-4 Colts next Saturday, and that is just wrong.

Wouldn't you rather see, the 12-4 Colts hosting the 11-5 Patriots next Saturday instead of the 8-8 Chargers hosting those 12-4 Colts? Unless you are from San Diego, I suspect the answer is a resounding yes.

First round playoff predictions:

Colts cream the Bolts (who should be sitting home watching the playoffs on TV)
Atlanta creams the Cardinals (who also shouldn't be in the playoffs)
Jaguars beat Miami handily
Eagles beat up the Vikings
