Robin,
During WWII ,16 mountain divisions were raised. I'll give you a brief overview of the 1st-6th mountain div
1st Gebirgsjäger Div: participated in the Poland invasion
2nd Gebirgsjäger Div: took part in the Poland invasion, the invasion of Norway in 1940 and remained there until 1944, then it was sent to Denmark. Later in the war it fought in Southern Germany where it was destroyed
3th Gebirgsjäger Div:Took part in the invasion of Poland .Part of operation Barbarossa, but failed to take Murmansk. Later in 1942 it served near Leningrad. Retreating with the German front it surrendered to the Soviets in Silesia.
4th Gebirgsjäger Div:Fought in Bulgaria and participated in the invasion of Yugoslavia. Went to the Eastern front, fought in South Russia and was moved to the Crimea. Was pushed back into Hungary and into Slovakia where it fought the Soviets in the Tatra mountains.It surrendered to the Soviets in May 1945.
5th Gebirgsjäger Div : played a major role in smashing the Greek resistance. Air landed in Crete and fought alongside the German paras. Moved to Leningrad in Oct 1941. Was later moved to Italy where it opposed the allied invasion at the Gustav and Gothic lines . Surrendered to the Americans in Turin in 1945
the 6th Gebirgsjäger Div was a unit of the Waffen SS it fought in Finland and in Northern Russia.Fought in Karelia; Was moved to Germany to participate in the Nordwind offensive ( French Vosges Mountains) in Jan 1945. Finally it surrendered to the Americans in Austria in 1945;
At the end of the war the gebirgsjäger were deployed in critical areas as the quality of the new conscripts was poor.. They had the "EDELWEISS" insignia on collar and cap and often wore short beards like the Kriegsmarine.
Hope this helps
