On this past Sunday we left for the West to pick up my son from his wilderness program and take him to his new program in California, near Los Angeles. We landed in Las Vegas on Sunday morning (Pacific time) and in the course of four days drove two hours to Utah, stayed overnight on Sunday, then another two hours to the back country where our rental car had to go over some rough unpaved roads and territory to get to my son's group (where they basically lived off the land), picked him up, drove five hours to the San Bernardino area, stayed overnight on Monday, took him to his new program and spent several hours there and drove another three hours back to Sin City, where we stayed in the middle of the Strip at the Tropicana before flying home yesterday.
Some photos from the air as we flew across the western US are below.
The landscape out West is some of the most beautiful I've seen. When you drive from LV to get to Utah you pass through Arizona and go through some gorges that are absolutely breathtaking. The mountain ranges are indescribable and in Utah, many of them are red. It's beautiful country.
The drive from St. George's, Utah to his campsite is very desolate and if you break down there, man, you could be in serious trouble, especially when it turns to unpaved road. There is very little signs of life there, save for a few wild horses who are the descendants of the original horses in the USA. They are not often seen.
The drive from Las Vegas to California and back on I-15 is basically flat and straight and has to be one of the most boring drives. Other than Barstow and Baker, there are no cities it seems and much of it is sparse vegetation. I think we were near the Mojave Desert.
On Tuesday night we got back to Vegas and lo and behold there was NY and the Statue of Liberty in Vegas; the Eiffel Tower too!
We left on Wednesday and to top it all off one of the passengers on the plane (not me!) got a little rowdy and kept demanding drinks from the stewardesses. They eventually told him he had enough and was warned. He got a little better at one point but apparently the people sitting next to him had enough and moved to another seat. Sure enough, when we got to Newark, we were asked to remain in our seats and the Police escorted him off. A strange ending to a long trip.
