Four States, 900 Miles, NY in Vegas and One Arrest! (1 Viewer)

Brad, very cool trip you went on and yes you were in the Mojave Desert between Vegas and Victorville I spent a few years stationed up there at the Army's Maneuver Center NTC about 40 miles into the middle of no where from Barstow. Is your son doing an outward bound program? Sounds like a great adventure and a chance to learn some important life skills.

Dave

Dave, as you probably remember, once you pass Victorville on the way to Vegas, civilization disappears, except for Barstow and Baker. The sun is very strong and it can be very hard to see. You know you've passed into Nevada when you start seeing casinos.

He attended a program better and more intense than Outward Bound, called Second Nature. It helps people from early teens to about 30. He was in the young adult program. Based on what we've seen, I can't recommend it enough.

Air travel has become absolutely brutal. Talk about an industry that has gone to smash. The corporate owners have robbed these companies, eliminated any form of customer service, and generally made the experience as stressful as possible for their passengers. People are stressed out by the time they get on the plane with the security lines, the delays, and the entire hassle. Then they are jammed into seats too small for an average adult. The result is expected. Angry and unruly passengers. And don't even think about traveling with small kids unless you want to be confronted by wild eyed travelers who want to kill you. I get a laugh when they stopped serving food after 9/11. Claiming it was a security risk. Apparently the passengers might use the plastic knives to take over the plane. The whole thing was a cost savings facade taking advantage of that tragedy. The way corporations make money now is not by becoming more efficient and providing a better service, but by cost cutting (number of employees, salaries, pensions) until their customers become so fed up that they go bankrupt. Then they cash in and move on.

Nice pic's and thread Brad. It takes me back to my visit to the U.S. many moons ago. I hired a car at Flagstaff Arizona and drove to the Grand Canyon which was a scenic and pleasant drive. The canyon was awesome and back in those days you could drive and park close to the canyon's rim. I believe the authorities stopped this a few years after my visit and now you have to get a shuttle bus to the rim. I also drove back to LA from Flagstaff on the I-15 as I was sick of travelling on the greyhound bus. I also visited Las Vegas although that was earlier in my trip as I kinda criss crossed the country during my trip. I did the planes, trains and automobiles thing with the greyhound bus thrown in for good measure! I took heaps of pic's but only on film so I cannot post any. Digital camera's were in there infancy back then.

Tom
Thanks for Sharing your Travels Brad, sounds like you all had a great time, and TomT my lovely wife and I lived in Flagstaff for 2 years, actually got married on the San Francisco peaks (tallest mountain in Arizona) loved it there, beautiful area all around...Sammy

It does seem really nice out west. I was really impressed with St. George's. I could see myself living there. Seemed like a relaxed lifestyle. Not sure I convinced my wife {eek3}

When we got there on Sunday, the weather was very pleasant and saw a lot of people walkinig around in shorts.

Mate, you look like you are upta no good in that pic! {sm4}

P.S. did the squirrel manage to sneak into that backpack of yours and end up back home with ya!

Tom

Why is Toddy begging for crumbs from the squirrel's meal? ^&confuse

Excellent thread Brad, thanks very much for posting. My apologies mate I meant to ask you how your son is doing, hope his stay out there went well.

Well your report has an element of deja Vu for me. We also stayed at the Tropicana and just loved Vegas. Walking the strip , visiting all the big hotels (especially the Luxor)and Casinos and all the time that gorgeous warm summer evening breeze all along the strip. Wonderful place. We then went onto Grand Canyon which is jaw dropping the first time you see it.

Really enjoyed your pics Brad, brought a lot of it back.

We don't really enjoy flying that much so the drunk guy on your flight is our second worse nightmare, the first being our actual flight home when the plane dropped suddenly after clipping the edge of a storm and two of the hostesses were knocked out cold amid much screaming and shouting of ' we're going to die' etc {eek3}:(

Rob

Thanks Rob and no worries. I think he's doing well.

When we got into Vegas on Tuesday night, we were both bone tired. We had driven nine hours on Monday, two hours to the campsite (where when we were driving over land that I wouldn't call a road, the mirror popped out but which I was able to pick up and pop back in), two hours back to Saint George, and then another five to California, and then three and a half hours back to Vegas. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see much of Vegas but when it's dark it looks much more alive than in the day.

Christ, your flight sounds like a real nightmare. The drunk guy was just a mere annoyance but your flight sounds much worse.

An experience like that would cure me of wanting to fly!

Brought back some fond memories when I saw your photo's Brad, so thought I'd post a couple from our trip to the Grand Canyon.......as you can see we made a special friend that magic day!
Cheers Toddy

PS....ha, don't I look like an overseas tourist.
As you can see Toddy is a well behaved Kiwi with little furry things in the U.S....Here's one from the U.S doing strange things with a little furry thing in N.Z {sm3}:wink2:

Brad

My wife and I had a couple of days in Vegas before travelling on to the Canyon. Neither of us drink or gamble so in retrospect we should have either just stayed one night or got along to some shows. We just walked up and down the main street 'people watching'. Australia is warm but the dry wind that came out of the desert was very warm.

The course your son went on sounds interesting. There are a few that run in Australia - one includes walking the Kokoda Track in PNG - but they have always sounded a bit like boot camps. The one your son attended sounds as though it is in a different league altogether. It might well be one of those experiences that in twenty years time you hear him recount to his own children as 'the best time of my life'.

Regards

Jack

......Tom mate I'm always up to no good, it's just a question of greasing my way out of it that's the trick:wink2: The pic of me is quite deceiving really. You should try looking causal with a squirrel barrowing into your side pocket searching for food, with over a hundred tourists surrounding ya firing off their digital cameras like AK47's.......it was hard work^&grin

Actually no I'm exaggerating a bit now, 'Cyril' the squirrel and I parted company rather swiftly after he finally located and then promptly demolished the last of me muffin. There were however several bus loads of Asian tourists swarming around me & the daughter that day and it was entertaining because I felt like an NBA star cause most seemed to be teenagers that only came up to my armpit. Anyway they got me to take several of group photo's which was fun.

The place is amazing and would highly recommend anyone visiting the States to make a trip to the Grand Canyon.....simply awesome, plus the people are great.{sm4}

Actually the little sods are cheeky bugga's they nearly whipped me muffin and biscuit as I was inspecting my packed lunch. They were very slick & quick, while one did the distracting and sat on the stone wall looking cute, his mates moved in and started raiding me paper bag.....I was most impressed.^&grin

Man thats a lot of driving , very tiring doing all that in that space of time. I know just what you mean about that drive from California to Vegas too.

It was horrific Brad. Ness saved me from injury because I was asleep when the belt light came on so she leant over and fastened it for me and as soon as she'd done it the plane just plummeted . As well as seeing cabin crew out cold in the aisle I will never forget the screaming. We didnt fly for years after and even today only fly with ' medical assistance ' . My brother and his wife were also on the flight and the day after landing he contacted the airline to thank the captain to be told it was the worst event the pilot had seen in his career.

Throw in gunshots at our Motel in flagstaff one night and it was quite the eventful trip mate!

That is quite amazing. You are lucky to be alive, thank goodness.
