We are very pleased to present our newest series of figures, the Franco-Prussian War!! The Franco-Prussian War was fought between the French under Napoleon III and the Prussians of Otto von Bismarck from 1870-1871. The war was provoked by Bismarck to further his agenda of creating a unified German State, rallying the southern German states to his cause who believed France to be the aggressor. A quick series of victories in by the Prussians and Germans in Eastern France lead to the capture of several key cities and Napoleon III himself, leading to the fall of the Second French Empire and the rapid creation of the Third French Republic. The Republican forces were defeated as well culminating in the Siege of Paris. The war ended with the Treaty of Frankfurt in May 1871 and the result of the conflict was a unified German Nation State opening the door for German expansionism and Imperialism. France was ordered to pay significant reparations and to cede Alsace-Lorraine to Germany. The combination of French bitterness and German nationalism resulting from the Franco-Prussian War planted the seeds of the larger First World War some 40 years later. Once again, First Legion we are breaking new ground and showing that we aren't afraid to cover in detail less popular conflicts that have up to this point received little or no coverage at all in the toy soldier world. We hope you like the new range and additional releases will follow over the course of 2019 including Prussian Infantry, Algerians, French Cavalry to name a few.

At last. This ain’t gonna be cheap. At the risk of sounding like an ingrate I can hardly wait to see the Prussians and maybe the Iron Chancellor himself.

They look good but I am waiting to see the Prussians. Maybe a small diorama of 20 or so figures as the price is steep.
Happy for FPW collectors like George and Brad.

These are beautiful. Thrilled for George and others who wanted these so badly. Nothing stirs my interest like the French troops in their blue and red, banners flying, bugles blowing, bayonets gleaming. Going to have to find some way to get a few of these. Nicely done FL. -- Al

A long time coming - Well done First Legion for leading the way. Superb :salute::

DEFINITELY going for this series, but I won't be buying multiples. It will make a lovely vignette!

Upon reflection, I think I’m going to wait to see the Prussians, which is what interests me more anyway. Moreover, I find the prices a little daunting, although, candidly, they’re not out of whack with other FL ranges.

For years i was eager to have figures from this important (it is at the base of the WWI or at least of part of it) but longly forgotten war, and now they are here! But i must say that in these years we had a few figures similar in appearance as the WWI poilus of 1914, identical in nearly all to these figures, so the effect of novelty is a little spoiled. By the way i agree with who said that to appreciate really this range we must wait for the prussians, and then the bavarians, the zouaves etc.

I add that the FP War is one of the most iconic before the mass diffusion of the photography ...I think to Meissonier, Detaille, De Neuville...lot of inspiration...fighting in cities, barricades, skirmishers etc. it's right to start with 2 lines of soldiers but that is only the tip of the iceberg! (I wanted to add too some paintings by the artist mentioned but the pics were heavy)

Any mention of the Franco Prussian war and inspiration must also include the names of two best IMO Richard Knötel & Carl Röchling . :wink2:

Carl Becker also made some nice paintings. Although not within the purview of the Franco Prussian War, Charles Woolley’s book The Kaiser’s Army in Color Uniforms of the Imperial German Army as illustrated by Carl Becker - 1890-1910 is a must have for anyone interested in late 19th Century History. It’s published by Schiffer Military History and should still be available on Amazon.

The plates in this book were the basis for the figures that Beating Retreat made for me.

Great post; the artwork from the period is outstanding, specifically the works of De Neuville and Detaille, it was part of the inspiration for me to begin collecting the period, the fighting in the cemetery at Gravelotte St. Privat is in my top five military artworks for me...…………….

Recently published by Heimdal in French - their Napoleonic titles have been printed in English language versions - not sure about his one. What is amazing in this title is the number of different Franc Tireur units. Do not know if First legion will be releasing any.

I bought this book, it's an outstanding reference book and yes, loads of those units, they fought mostly after the Battle of Sedan in late 1870/early 1871...……..
