I came across this article, Living Reminders of Africa's Colonial Past in Namibia, about German rule in Namibia prior to World War I and the continued presence of German people and German culture in certain parts of Namibia. I knew nothing of this history and it's a rather interesting read.

The article also refers to Germany's battles with a local tribe, the Herrero. Germany is currently negotiating with Namibia over payments to be made to the Herrero arising out of the Herrero rebellion and ensuing deaths.

Namibia or as it was known "Deutsch-Sudwestafrika" has a large desert so they even had Schutztruppen mounted on camels.

My boss (he is German) told me about this and their claim for compo I saw it on the German news.
