Are they your own trench sections? They look good. Being from where you are do you like the Australian Lighthorse models from you know who?!

Ah, yes - I made the trench section from foam and Magatreat (Liquid sandstone) with corrugated card, matchsticks and Tamiya sandbags. Pressed the bases wrapped in Gladwrap into the wet surface.
I prefer dismounted Lighthorse as they fought in many engagements without horses and very few with...the scope for dios without horses is greater. In addition, as a horseman in my younger days, I find few sculptors who can create a believable horse...and I'll say no more on that subject :wink2:

I did not realise the Light Horse by you know who was a love that dare not speak its name!{sm4}{sm4}{sm4}

I must not blaspheme on these pages but between you me the ALH are my favourites, even more so than the AZW and as you can see from my picture in front of iSandlwana, that's saying something! I'm trying to push for Gallipoli from WB however. That may tip the balance once again!

Now Jack - it's horses for courses - and this is Britains course; and WB don't do Lighthorse - they're done by ...whatsisname.{sm4} By the way, Black Caviar did a good job at Royal Ascot!! That Aussie horse is light on its feet...^&grin

I wish I had your mastery of such building.

Can I assume then, that you would be a fully paid up member of a Gallipoli series??? I think the ANZACS need to be immortalized.

Now that WB has done the Titanic lifeboat, they may have a go at the Gallipoli landings --- some wonderful potential there for different types of dio...and the periscope rifle; and the delayed firing rifles of the evacuation; and.....etc etc^&cool

What was that jockey Nolan doing? Good job Bourchier didn't misjudge the pace as badly as that at Beersheba! Royal Ascot did at least put to bed who is the better out of Black Caviar and Frankel. Frankel is just a machine.

I have just started the AZW in the past few weeks. Nice figures at a good price.

I have also done the drive through SA to visit Rorkes Drift and Isandlwana. The area is very much like our Darling Downs just west of Brisbane.

Good luck with the Gallipoli push from WBs!

The inspiration for the dio is from the Mont St Quinton dio in the Australian War Memorial and the documentary "War in the Trenches", which gives the dimensions of the average trench along with a diagram. As quoted by another dio maker on the forum - it's a lot of trial and error. Just have a go and don't be afraid to mess up - but I recycle my mistakes rather than bin them; it's probably my Scottish heritage...{sm4}

I think the ANZAC story could do with telling and retelling - not to make the ANZACs immortal but to create and constantly recreate the spirit of cooperation that underpinned the Corps - but it would be terrible to think that this could only ever happen through war. It would be a wonderful thing if this could be achieved everywhere in peace.

Frankel? Frankel who?

How did you go about altering the helmets of the earlier Tommy range? They look really good and what paints did you use?

Games Workshop have a product called Liquid Greenstuff in a standard paint pot - water -based - just apply thickly and shape as it dries. Paint straight over the top with light sand acrylic and use a sepia wash when dry. No need for an undercoat as LG has a matt paint surface when dry. (Lightly paper with emery if needed before painting to improve shape). This process allows for the old range to sit comfortably with the new releases - it also softens the head profile of the older figures.

WW1 pixels.jpg

This is the first picture I've tried to include on the forum. This is the exclusive WW1 set that arrived this morning or should I say four sets!

So they exist, nice set, I plan including the figure carrying the ammo boxes to make it a 3 man team, thanks for showing, Cheers, Robin.

Ah yes; the Marne Taxis - well that's another story; a purely French story and very evocative. But Sausage Valley was a place of some diversity (mostly Australian diversity) - I think I could do it justice with another truck and a horsedrawn vehicle...and a Field Kitchen - this could take some inventiveness since my cigarette store won't get any more $7-50 convertibles (note: they are RH Drive). Britains are doing the battlefield figures but not much around for logistic support - drivers, cooks, mule skinners etc, even warriors in non-battlefield poses{sm2} - will probably come down to figure conversions. Should be worth the effort though.{sm4}

Hi Fitzgibbon,
I see you are on the search for some WW1 logistics inspiration! :cool:Well I have to say that the trucks you have posted here are very nice indeed...{sm4}
Unfortunately other than the sporadic armoured car here and there, the TAW vehicles that pop up now and then on E Bay.....all that is left ....is to scavange the market for Civilian saloon cars and commercial trucks and apply to them a warrior cloak. Do check www.scalelink.co.uk for some options on trucks and supplies for conversion, they are a good source also.
I was fortunate to purchase a few vehicles from TAW and others....before they ceased to exist.
Obee is helping me in converting a few more civilian vehicles to Aussie transports.........
Attached a few picks.....

Pitty that this Bulldog Truck is no longer made by " First Gear "..specially now that they own Britains it would be a great platform for many variants.......from mounted AA guns to transport, Red Cross and many more......

Thanks for the tips on vehicles - I really would like to find some more to work into dios even if they need converting (I enjoy this anyway) - so here are my intrepid troops returning ...
