Going through Soccer Withdrawal? (1 Viewer)

Rivet counter!!!LOL Though it really pains me to agree Rugby is the better game
Mitch

I wish you would call it football!!! its not soccer.
For all you out there who love to complain when Americans and others, call 'Football', 'Soccer', you should know that it was the British that invented the word and it was also one of the first names of what we now primarily know as 'Football'.

In fact, in the early days of the sport among the upper echelons of British society, the proper term for the sport was 'Soccer'. Not only that, but the sport being referred to as 'Soccer' preceded the first recorded instance of it being called by the singular word 'Football' by about 18 years, with the latter happening when it became more popular with the middle and lower class. When that happened, the term 'Football' gradually began dominating over 'Soccer' and the then official name 'Association Football'...........

None of which matters as Rugby is the game played in heaven......^&grin

Any sport is easy to play at first but to play well that's a different story. Regarding the diving, etc., sorry but every sport has players who are looking for an advantage. In baseball, we have people taking steroids and putting a foreign substance on the ball has been going since the beginning.

I watched practically every game at the WC and saw a lot less diving so it's overblown. What I saw were a lot of players putting their all out there for their country.

This will gladden Aussie hearts. I read an article that in years to come, experts believe that US and Australia will be football powers :)

I'm sure that when the rugby tournaments come, people won't mind me making some comments there in the same way others have made comments about football :wink2:

This is true Brad. Even at the 2012 Olympics the cheating was so brazen! I watched some of these young people climb many steps and then jump into water far below........the DIVING WAS OUTRAGEOUS !!:wink2:

Well at least one thing remains sacred, we can all take heart in that there has never been any cheating in the Tour De France.

Rob

Yes, but they're trying to clean up their act, so to speak. I think few of us could do what they do, cycle a hundred miles a day without breaks. I'm rather in awe of their accomplishments.

Yeah am only kidding Brad, am sat here watching it and marvel at these folk, some of the mountains/hills they ride up I could not even walk up. Anyone cheating bring a great disservice on the genuine sportsmen.

Comment away mate but i think you will struggle finding Rugby players falling over like fairies, the crowds won't cry when there team falls out of the comp, the crowds will be able to leave a stadium after beating the home team without fear of being bashed.
2 totally different sports with different moral's mate on and off the field,soccer/football in my eyes is a joke to much money involved, and IMO faking a injury/falling over for a free or a penalty is cheating simple as that,i would rather loose 20-nil and walk off with my head held high rather than take a dive it is embarrassing.

The pre-season exhibition season is upon as and many European teams are playing friendlies in the US. Tonight Bayern beat Chivas in NJ, showing the Barcelona style of play of short passing possession that their coach Pep Guardiola, former player and coach of Barca, favors.

Real Madrid have played two games but haven't looked that great so far but Ronaldo hasn't played yet nor have some of their new signings. On Saturday they play Man U before 100,000 at Ann Arbor. Should be exciting.

The FCB have premiered an English-language website and Facebook page, too, aimed at the US market. They've been promoting viewing parties around the country.

A far cry from "Soccer Made in Germany", back in the day...

Prost!
Brad

I liked those programs back in the 80s! They were fun to watch.

There is an article in today's Times about their presence in the US. They are establishing an office in NY. I will find the link and post it as I'm off to work.

Our local PBS station used to carry SMiG Saturday afternoons. The show ran either before or after "Doctor Who" (the Tom Baker years). I always enjoyed the announcer and how excited he would get. "Kevin Keegan charges down the field for Hamburg!" (though by the time the program aired here, I think Keegan had returned to the UK).

Prost!

He's my favorite, though I enjoyed John Pertwee, too, as well as each of the actors in the revived series, from Eccleston to the latest one (haven't seen it since Tennant, when I cancelled cable).

PBS was good for bringing us other British TV programming, in the days before cable as we know it today. They also aired "Red Dwarf", "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe", "Are You Being Served?", Monty Python and Benny Hill, Kenny Everett, and dramas like "I, Claudius" and "Fall of Eagles". I also got to see "Upstairs, Downstairs", "The Duchess of Duke Street", and the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "Nicholas Nickelby" with Roger Rees. Back then, most commercial networks didn't think that content would sell. Of course, today, many cable providers carry BBC America, which I think sells pretty well.

Prost, or more appropriate to the subject, cheers!
Brad
