Gros Napoleon at Jaffa (1 Viewer)

The semi naked figures were also completed. I tried to follow the drapery of the trousers and the clothes. The fully naked figure in front was also partly resculpted.

I decided to assemble all the figures for this main grouping, to ensure that all the elements were in correct juxtapositioning to each other. Additional details included adding legs and resculpting minor details.

A basic undercoat of paint was added. Notice the improved drapery on the kneeling figure.

I resculpted the right hand and glove. Added a Historex tassel to the sword grip barely visible in the pic here. The draped sash of the semi-naked figure was completed as a tied shirt sleeve. The musculature of both semi-naked figures was finalized and the head of the right most figure was repositioned. A basic undercoat of yellow ochre and black was applied to some areas.

I started to apply more colours to the main group.
I also started to sculpt two other figures. One figure in bicorne hat just behind the Chasseur figure, and another blind figure to the right of the main grouping, next to a pillar. I have tried to make these figures slightly smaller than the main figure grouping.

I worked more to complete the blind figure, adding legs which are not visible in the painting. The figure is considerably smaller than the main group of figures as it is in the background.

The figure in bicorne hat just behind the Chasseur figure appears to be a high ranking officer. Details of his tunic with oak leaves suggest at least a general rank. He wears a pink red sash and also has a curved saber. The bicorne has a trefoil plume. He appears to be pressing a handkerchief to his face, too. I have modeled the figure as such and have also added a right leg not visible in the painting.

As it was the weekend, I started off on modeling two natives to the left of the painting, distributing bread to the inmates. Taller figures than the main grouping, I have continued to use 1/32 heads and arms (lengthened) but with 1/24 scale female feet for one of the figures.

Once the general shape and posture was determined, I focused on the drapery, trying to follow as closely to the painting.

This is a major project...very interesting to see the progress.

Thank you.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your comment. As stated earlier, I am trying to reproduce this painting in 3D with forced perspective based on overlapping layers. Mentally, I have divided the painting into 4 main layers - The 1st layer background comprising the sky and battlements (I may do the battlements as a separate layer). The 2nd layer comprises the row of columns with the blind figure and other background figures.
The 3rd layer comprises the main figure grouping and the natives distributing bread. The 4th layer comprises the foreground figures. I am mixing 1/32 scale parts with 1/24 scale parts for the foreground figures. The background figures are scaled at about 1/35. Still very much a WIP.

Finalising the two native figures distributing bread.

Read a bit more on the painting. The Chasseur to the right of Nap was Bessieres (doesn't look like him as he always had white powdered hair) but this seems to be borne out by evidence. The officer behind Bessieres is an ordnance officer Daure.

Completed the two natives distributing bread. Added tassels with wire to one of them, also a right leg (if one looks at the painting carefully). I then undercoated with some paint.

That is excellent :salute::

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your kind comments. I have now started to work on the other groupings - the naked figure being helped by the native being one of these.

I also knocked up a preliminary dummy for the seated figure with a haunted look. This time, I used a 1/24 scale woman's head with 1/32 scale man's limbs to make the transition towards a larger figure in the foreground.

Victor;

It is interesting to go back to the original art work, and see how you are working towards achieving each pose.

Thank you.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for taking such an interest in this project. I hope it will meet up with some of your expectations.

For the seated figure, notice how I extend the length of the limbs by using the curved wires as extension? I also cut down the forehead and curled the toes as per the painting.

Then I knocked up another dummy for the laying prone figure. This time I used 1/24 head, torso and upper limbs.

I also readjusted the height of the arab physician figure, substituting a generic 1/24 head.

Some progress over the weekend on several figures.

The seated haunted-looking figure with cloak is mostly completed. I have also completed most of the two lying figures. There was much plastic surgery to get the limbs into the correct juxtapositions to fit the painting. The native physician has also been re-crafted, mostly the face and head. I also started on the dying soldier and patient in the lower right hand. Most parts used were 1/24 scale as these figures would be in the forefront.
