Hello all,

I finally saw Hacksaw Ridge in its entirety last night. Inspired by the story of Corporal Desmond Doss, Army Combat Medic, and his heroic actions during the Battle of Okinawa, it was a great film.

Seeing the movie and wanting to revisit "No Marine Left Behind" Wounded Set (USMC016), I searched for a fitting background and ended up editing one for this shot:

pretty gruesome scenes huh?
more so than Private Ryan...

Thanks Mike. It was gruesome. There was some really intense scenes. I particularly liked the scene in which Doss dozed off in the foxhole and then dreamed the Japanese attacked with bayonets.

Fairly violent film, not in hurry to see again. Could not work out, as the Japanese were firing down from the top of the ridge, why they did not cut the rope ladder, certainly some feat to set up this enormous rope structure by the Marines and difficult to put back. Well done Rob. Robin.

occurred to me the first time I watched it...
then I thought...
that maybe they wanted the Marines to come back up...
as they had the advantage...

part truth...part Hollywood...^&grin

Found this:

“Facing heavy machine gun and artillery fire, Doss repeatedly ran alone into the kill zone, carrying wounded soldiers to the edge of the cliff and singlehandedly lowering them down to safety. Each time he saved a man’s life, Doss prayed out loud, “Lord, please help me get one more.” By the end of the night he had rescued an estimated 75 men. (The always modest Doss reckoned he saved about 50, but his fellow soldiers gauged it closer to 100. They decided to split the difference.) l

Perhaps he positioned the rope so any Japanese attempting to cut it would endanger themselves.
 
Thank you all for the comments; here's an attempt to create the rope ladder ridge.

Silly me, I could have layed the rock formation on the ground and photograph, but no, I stood the rock formation on it's side securing the USMC in the rope as if he was really climbing it. {sm4}
If you look closely, you'll notice the bayonet under the rope helping hold the figure in place. Lucky for me, I didn't drop the figure as the netting kept slipping off the rock from the weight.
This was a tough photograph.

Yes you nailed it Rob and of course laying it down and turning the camera offers no challenge.^&grin, Robin.

Nicely done! E-4 Doss was not a jarhead however. Linedoggie Medic w/307th Regt/77th I.D..lads. Army should have been kicked in the *** for putting a CO into a line-outfit vs.the Japs.COs were Medics assigned to the ETO.The Germans would not zap'em.Albeit, indirect fire played no favourites. Quality work here nevertheless.

P.S. Odd that the film had the Japs constantly at fixed bayonets and not once were the Army Infantry at same.On line assaults with lead,no steel!??
 
Rob, you captured the movie scenes beautifully. The climbing scene is amazing. Where did you get the rope? Chris

Hi Chris, it's some decorative nautical netting. Many craft stores sell it.

He sure wasn't (mentioned in my first post); now we need K&C to offer a small Pacific Army Set with Doss, don't we? Would make a great 4-figure movie set.

Certainly not compared to trying to get the figure to stay in place hanging in the netting (and had to turn the camera for a vertical shot as well - tricky!) ^&grin

ROB …. ^&grin {sm3} {sm4} … hopefully that expresses the enjoyment I got from your pics. I love to see K&C USMC shots!
The rope shot is so nice I saved it as a background. Interesting contrast between the foreground rope & cliff and background jungle.

The movie was a typical Hollywood production but (IMO) fairly entertaining and well done.
I (almost) always overlook the historical inaccuracies in favor of a well done flick and this is a good example.

The Japanese attacking shot is also really well done, giving me a (OH darn, they're coming right at me ...{sm2}

Very nice photos and tribute! Desmond Doss was a true hero, and fully deserved the Medal of Honor! His commitment to human dignity, service and God are extraordinary and inspiring!
 
I was playing around over the weekend and came up with this cave shot which isn't exactly what I wanted, but thought I'd share anyway.
I'll be taking some USMC shots this weekend with K&C's latest figures.
