Watched this one yesterday with one of my sons. A good but not great movie in our shared opinion, w K Costner. We both thought it tried too hard to be like Lonesome Dove with disparate plot threads. Not doing well at the box office, probably should have been released as a tv series, which will probably happen at some future date.

This is suppose to go to TV when part 2 comes out, End of August or September I believe.

Watched this in cinema a few days after release.
I am a Western / Costner fan and enjoyed it. Was disappointed to see it did not do well at box office. Dont understand why did not do well. Perhaps because did not like fact going to be in 4 parts and knew would eventually be able to watch on streaming.
There were basically 4 storylines all leading to Horizon.
Cowboy (Costner) saves prostitute from killer and they get chased by bad guys
Wagon train through Indian country with Luke Wilson
Sienna Miller survives Indian attack and meets up with cavalry officer Sam Worthington
Another survivor of Indian attack joins up with bounty hunters (Jeff Fahey) after revenge on Indians

Since it is 3 hours long and planned for another 3 movies of equal length it is more like watching a TV series. Last 5 minutes was previews from next installment.

Overall I thought the cast, production and scenery were very good.

Now seems remainder of 3 planned movies might go to a streaming service like Netflix. If Netflix willing to pay $150 - $200 for some recent 2 hours movies how much is a 12 hour series worth ?

Hopefully Costner still makes a lot of money out of this project.

One thing I found amusing was the cavalry officer repeatedly referring to Indians as "indigenous" people. Anyone hearing that during that time frame would not have known what he was talking about.

Agree on that point. It was odd. I wonder if that was because the cavalry officer was played by Sam Worthington an Aussie actor and he might have had input into the dialogue. Very much used in current Oz but dont recall the term being used in a Western before.

I guess they used several different terms for 'Indigenous' people, however I would think 'Natives' would have been the most common term used in the US at that time. Interesting to note that the term 'Aboriginal' was used for many years to describe someone 'Indigenous' to a place across the globe, including India ironically, now seems like Australian Aboriginals have claimed 'Aboriginal' as there own.

You are behind the times. Now correct term is apparently First Nations.

Yes, First Nations was introduced to include Torres Straight Islanders etc.

Not only that but there are apparently 300+ First Nations (average size would be well under 5,000). Even more fun is that Australian states are planning to enter into treaties with their First Nations. In Queensland this will be 100 +. Prior to the Treaties will be the truth telling and subsequent treaties may lead to reparations.

Back then in the US you might use their tribal name, Sioux, Cheyenne, Comanche etc. but most would call them the generic term Indians.

At least the Abo's are indigenous to Aussie, unlike our NZ Maori who basically slaughtered and ate the previous tenants of NZ, after arriving by canoe via the far reaches of the Pacific.

Well, the 'Abo's' say they were the originals here, but who knows really considering Australia has been occupied by humans for more than 50,000 years. Personally I reckon they 'stole' it from someone well before the Europeans arrived. And just in case you meet some, they are usually not happy being called Abo's;) I guess that depends on how well you know them, similar
to Polynesians, I've found that some are ok being called Polys, but from personal experience the larger guys don't appreciate being called a 'Roly-Poly', lucky I'm an older guy that may damage easily :ROFLMAO:

As we both know, Aussie's and Kiwi's are well known for their use of slang and abbreviations when it comes to just about anything involving the English language. :p:LOL:

Of course race and culture are prime targets and have been since I could fill a nappy. While I except now-a-days some 'slang' may not be socially acceptable in a wider sense, the PC nonsense we're currently being subjected too IMO is simply targeting free speech. Each to there own I say.....
