House Bill HR 7608 - For History Majors, this is not good (1 Viewer)

A priceless pic would be both you and George in 11th MS Uniforms or 4th VA Uniforms standing in Defiance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding. Long story short, I think we all appreciate this in my words assault on our history. I was at least happy to see this being raised by the Sons of Union Veterans, ironically Sons of Confederate Veterans so far crickets ............................:( As usual, the Union is more organized, some things about history never change!!!!:)

We'll be chained to the VA monument....

NPS rangers tell me; "Well Son, you'd better call your lawyer"
Me; "That would be the gentleman to my right"
Louis to the Ranger; "Hold my beer"

The President just said that if he does not give his GOP nomination acceptance speech from the White House he will deliver it from Gettysburg. That should frame the cultural issues at stake in the next election nicely.

George,

You really missed your calling . . . as hysterical as you are, you should have been a stand up comic! {sm4}

I would be very surprised if that happened in Gettysburg. The security issues would be a nightmare. There would also likely be issues with using a National Park for political purposes instead of official business. There really is no place to do it that I can think of. Would they invite an audience? How would they keep protestors away? Giving it in the National Cemetery would be a bit odd in the midst of a pandemic, but they do have a speaker's platform. Couldn't fit more than a small gathering. Interesting idea though.

We should try to avoid, as much as possible, politics in this thread.

As a new member you may not be aware that politics is not permitted in this Forum.

I agree but we have to be honest in that we do politics in a roundabout way on here.Everything seems to be political nowadays even our toys.

Also the battlefield itself is hallowed ground, and to use it for pure political interests would be crass and totally out of place.

"War is merely an extension of politics" and our hobby is based on wars so by definition we are a political forum........LOL

Gents this is an interesting debate/discussion so keep it that way and stay away from politics.

My personal opinion as a historian is this Bill is terrible and will only promote ignorance.

The above quoted phrase (or paraphrases thereof) is often attributed to Clausewitz. However, as the following article shows, Clausewitz never said that.

Everything You Know About Clausewitz is Wrong: A Botched Translation of Clausewitz Has Had an Enduring Impact on Our Thinking of Warfare.

Totally agree Mark, but we need to be a little more creative with our posts if we don't want to face any further deletions or thread shut downs.

The States seems to be imploding right now, which is sad to see.

I had the honour of visiting Gettysburg for a few hours and couldn't get over the size of the place or the battles, simply amazing!

How long before going to Gettysburg or other battlefield parks will be viewed as being anti PC; do they even teach ACW history in school these days, or is it too sensitive of a subject for some? I recall in HS spending an entire week on the subject, each day devoted to 1861-1865, now it's probably glossed over in 10 minutes.

Visitorship to battlefield parks is dropping like a stone, down about 80% from 50 or so years ago.

Whenever I am in Gettysburg, I see either older visitors aged 60 plus, or students being dragged there on school class trips, hardly anything in between.

And sorry, my all time favorite Gettysburg story is about Sallie, the 11th PA's mascot and my nitwit cousin scarring his daughter for life once she found out Sallie got her brains blown out in February of 1865...…...…...……………..

Someone on another forum I belong to suggested any Confederate monument or statue erected past a certain year should be taken down due to the real reason it was put up in the first place.

Yeah, that sounds like a solid plan.

Really, I give up.

I'm kind of torn. I know groups like the KKK have been allowed to hold events on the Gettysburg battlefield. So I'm not exactly sure what the parameters are for speaking there. And at least one President spoke there in about 1863! LOL. Giving it some more thought, I think the Peace Memorial would make a good venue. They could shut down the road in front of that area and have plenty of room. FDR dedicated that monument back in the 1930s with a lot of Civil War veterans in attendance. It has one of the few eternal flames. Makes for a nice visual. There is some great newsreel footage of FDR there.
