How many out there... (3 Viewers)

For something a little bigger check out First Legion's 40mm lines. They are not large lines yet but if they sell well I'm sure they would be expanded.Very nice sculpts and reasonably priced.

Absolutely... 40mm is another route to take to make the hobby more affordable and First Legion looks like a great option. Unfortunately, they have limited ranges to choose from. I'm just trying to figure out what is suitable for my taste with the best price point. I may check out a wargaming event in my area at the end of this month and see for myself what's available in 28mm. Nothing like seeing it upclose to make a judgement... :)

I've bought half a dozen or so of the Perry Sudan sets, and fine figures they are, too. My problem with 28mm scale as a whole is the cartoonish proportions of the figures. There is no reason for them to be sculpted like this except style and war-game figs convention. Tom Meier addresses this at length in his blog: http://thunderboltmountain.com/serendipity/. He sculpts in realistic proportion and so did Edward Suren (whose Willies got me going on British colonials back in '71!). I'm not asking for absolute realism; I favour the trad Britain style myself. I notice that many of the 60mm figures have larger-than-life hands and heads, too, sometimes, so maybe it comes down to which style you prefer...

The old "Willie" range and also Stadden's 30mm range are all still available from Tradition Scandinavia in Sweden. Trooper

Thanks for the very interesting information regarding 40mm figures everyone. I had a try at two such figures that I found at a car-boot sale in England last year, for a song! Turned out that they were semi-flat "home-casts" in pure lead - originally supplied as moulds from Prince August range. I cleaned them up and painted them as members of 41st Royal Invalides, circa 1751. Great fun to do - as they took hardly any time at all to complete. Here they are below.

I very much enjoyed painting them, and have been looking around for some more to try for a while. The lead to the First Legion brand (thanks marco55), was very useful - as when I looked at their range - I found some very interesting products - and also a dealership here in the South of France - which is not too far away.

Result is - I have ordered a few castings, to be delivered by post at a very reasonable rate ( because it is internal to France) - in order that I can try out my hand at a few more. I will post the results in the Painting section in due course - so thanks for the leads again everyone - and another new direction to try my hand at. johnnybach^&grin

Hello all. I am one who switched from 54mm to 28mm many moons ago. The figures available in 28mm are mostly meant for wargamming purposes but I purchased many just to paint and display.

I have many 28mm ranges now. Here are some of my favorite manufacturers for
28mm scale:
ACW - Sash and Saber, Perry, Old Glory 2nd Edition.
Zulu War - Black Tree Design, Empress Miniatures (slightly smaller than Black Tree)
AWI - Perry, Old Glory 2nd Edition
WWII - Artizan, Crusader
WWI - Renegade, Great War Miniatures (slightly smaller than Renegade)
Alamo - Boot Hill
There are some other makes that are equally exiciting.

I have found myself very fond on 40mm latley. I am currently working on the Alamo in 40mm and ACW as well. For this scale my favorites are:
ACW - Sash and Saber
ALAMO - Sash and Saber
AWI - Trident, Sash and Saber
Zulu War - Sash and Saber
I have not seen any of the First Legion 40mm in person, but from thier website they look excellent.

Sash and Saber also carries other periods than those I mentiond above. There is a Yahoo group for 40mm collectors and gamers at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/40mmWargamingCollecting/

Walt, The AWI in 40mm has my attention. After seeing Trident's extensive range as well as Sash and Sabre and even Front Rank, all doing 40mm AWI there is a HUGE variety of troops and poses available.
Very reasonable casting prices too.
I have no 40mm and don't think I've ever seen one but I am intrigued !
Sash and Sabres 40mm Plains Indian wars also look like fun to paint, but I'm holding out for more poses.

Anyone interested in the French & Indian War in 40mm there is a man in Germany starting to sculpt vignettes. His first one is on his website now.I ordered a set last night. His site is www.scorpio-models.com .

The Trident figures are really gorgeous in my opinion, and compatible with the Sash and Saber line.

The Trident are all 1 piece castings I believe. Some may have seperate hands or arms to attach. Most of the Sash and Saber have seperate heads, and some seperate arms, hands. So you can make variety of poses from same body. For example I am using thier colored troops heads on their Union poses to make my
54th MA. regiment.

Trident also have an excellent selection of seperate heads that can be used with thier own or Sash and Saber figures. I still buy the occasional 54MM painted figure, but very rare so. I am really enjoying 40mm.
I have just ordered a set of the Spartan Miniatures Jason and the Argonauts in
40mm.

Please read my below posting first. But I just remembered I forgot to mention something. This year Sash and Saber is releasing a new 40mm range. I do not believe any details are mentioned on their webstie. But I have seen some of the protoypes at HMGS Cold Wars in March, and they look excellent! ....I will give you a hint...the event covered in this range took place in 1812, and it is not thier "war of 1812" range which is already released.
Okay here is another hint:

Here are some photos of my 40mm Alamo. I only have 1 wall piece done so far. This is small sample of over 100 defenders I have finished. And these are some of the Mexican Infantry from 2 of the 4 companies I am working on. Each company has a different unifrom. In this photo you will notice some of the infantry have blue tunics with white trousers and the other company has blue tunic with light blue trousers.

Beja_Tribesmen.jpgKordofan_Tribesman.jpg
Heres some more temptation I just found. 28mm multipose Colonial figurs in plastic. Perry's metal range is pretty good size and now they have Beja tribesmen in plastic.
I had been considering Britians Sudan line and complementing that with AIP 54mm plastics. Now, I dunno.Maybe resist them all.Is that a possibility?
