For hundreds if not thousands of years people have been transporting plants and animals all over the world. And the world is still here. Was not the potato introduced to Ireland, not native to it.I'm sure that plants and certainly animals have become invasive species that has hurt the area it was introduced to but like anything else man starts off with a good reasonable idea and gets fanatical about it.

Disease from foreign country's can destroy crops, animals and native animals I would prefer over the top inspection.
Why do people insist on bringing stuff in to countries when you know your not allowed, our Asian neighbours when traveling here try to bring stuff in to Australia that could decimate our agriculture industry.
If the country of destination doesn't alloy or sell what you like to eat don't visit.
If you worked in the industry and saw what happens you wouldn't say it's fanatical!!

Asian carp, Asian long horn Beatle, snakehead fish, zebra mussels to name just a few that have been in the headlines in the USA the last few years. i would hope the US customs works as half as hard as the Australian customs do. However I doubt it.

I understand about animals but not so much with plants except if they have a disease. The organic materials modelers sell I'm sure must have been processed in some way.

Doesn't seeds from plants get blown eventually taking root in areas they have never been.

Why risk Australia's agriculture industry plus our whole country's industry for a modeller's tree from the US or any where else.

Lol.
It sounds like a bad horror movie.:smile2: The darn stink bugs are becoming a royal pain the last few years here in the Midwest.

Yeah we got them too. There is also another bug that looks like a stink bug but about 60% can give you some kind of disease.Supposedly some have been captured here in Jersey.

Look I'm not making light of this but I'm not a agriculture expert and just asking questions.I'm sure the first settlers in Australia brought some kind of plants with them and it didn't destroy Australia did it?

No but we are still suffering from introduced animals and vegetation that are costing Millions to control and have no natural predators so they thrive.
So the first settlers did stuff up big time and have introduced things that are destroying our plants and animals if left to there own devices they would of.

Well it is good that they do things to protect each countries enviroments but I also know governments like to over regulate also. The link you posted was very informative but most of us don't read something like that at 5 years old.I have never been out of the US so something like that is not something I normally read. But there are many products that do come in to other countries.I'm just a little surprised about modeling shrubby being banned. I've bought products and never had no problems.Of course on the flip side I never thought to read if it was organic or not.You learn something new every day.

Mark,
I get your point....were it not for the Spaniards to introduce the potato, cacau ( chocolate ) and tomatoes to Europe bringing these goodies from the New World we would have a slimier waist line kkkkk...But there are the negative twists like rodents that went along the ships to the Pacific and destroyed stock and barrel fauna due to the same not having any defenses against the rats....and recently exotic animals bought at pet shops in the US being let loose in the wild making anacondas and larger serpents from Asia home at the Florida swaps makes me get really concerned.....{sm4}{sm4}..but then there is always the excessive controls like the one mentioned over chocolate filled with liquor etc....Guess this is the effect of a Global Market ....But Mr. Government ....let us have our dio shrubs, after all we need to build good quality dios.....kkkk
Cheers

I hardly read this when I was 5 but it’s always been well known that bringing certain agricultural products into this country is restricted; when you’re about to enter into the US you have to fill out a Customs form that contains questions about ag products.

I almost had peanut M&M's taken from me in Customs once....you cannot transport seeds or nuts in many cases! So I ate them. Problem solved!
Still not sure how a candy-coated nut/seed could have posed a threat....oh well!

(Real situation - but a fun aside!)

Julie

That story is nuts.

Judging by the way they routinely open my shipping boxes, rip open the packaging, manhandle the items and then jam them back into the boxes causing all sorts of damage, I'd say they work hard alright.

You'd think after a few thousand shipments of toy soldiers come to the same address, they would flag the address and let the items come through, but nope, they have to continually bust my chops.

Boy, that really stinks.
